How two brains can synchronise and why it matters - BBC News
Is collective intelligence more important than IQ and what exactly does it mean?
Internationally-acclaimed neuroscientist Dr Hannah Critchlow explains why brain synchronicity - the ability of two different brains to match their electrical brainwaves - is crucial to our future.
Dr Critchlow is based at the University of Cambridge and is the author of Joined Up Thinking: The Science of Collective Intelligence and its Power to Change Lives.

If we lose the freedom to be ourselves we will not be able to achieve our highest potential. Look at how quickly AI is coming on. It could render humanity obsolete.

The concept of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts is also known as emergence. It is the idea that when individual parts interact with each other, they can create something new and more complex than the sum of those parts.

Definitely. I am Autistic and my experience of neurotypicals is that they do not like an honest answer nor someone who can solve difficult problems or think outside the box. If anything they become defensive and condescending as though it is a personal insult to their intellect, when in fact the offer of help is given sincerely in response to their request with the intention of offering a solution to the problem they have voiced and causing them difficulties. It is extremely frustrating when you are asked for advice about a work problem when in actual fact the individual/ individuals do not actually expect an answer and I have learned that it is a strange form of social bonding, although, in the moment my desire to help is so great in such situations that I remember too late and I am ostracized for being a know it all.

I myself am on the spectrum and do completely understand what you are saying, but what I have noticed about a lot of people, including myself. We tend to cut straight to the point and forget that a big part of normal people is that they generally put much more thought into the complex emotions. For example: Jane doe should break up with Fred doe because he drinks too much and doesn’t show much affection to her, but the a typical Jane doe knows he does care for her but is having issues at work and started drinking more heavy. Jane doe also knows as his wife she should be more supportive and try to help him be happier by letting him know that he could find another job and helping him through that transition. Maybe she has some short comings too, that she should be doing but is kicking that bucket down the road. But to there autistic kid this is short an simple, that they should just divorce. An be happier. But life isn’t that simple things can spiral into a shit hole if they go an say I want a divorce. The dad could go into a bigger spiral an drink him self to death six months later an mom no longer get money from ex husband. Autistic people tend to look at life straight to the point, and forget about the complexity. Life isn’t black an white, and life is neither good nor evil. It is a spectrum with lots complex details

@@Coreyman32488 Evidently, I understand this, however, I would not advise anyone what to do in regard to their relationship, and in my personal experience of working in an office environment with women colleagues, when subjects of this kind arise, I choose to listen rather than contribute because I am not privy to their private relationship or faults, however, it is my neurotypical colleagues who are quick to give advice and be judgemental. On one occasion an individual was discussing having an affair in her home and getting caught in bed with another man. The details of which she shared as "It's only a laugh" to everyone else's great amusement. I refrained from commenting given that it did not impact upon my life. However, the colleague in question and the other colleagues insisted that I give an opinion, I suspect in order that everyone was on board and of the same opinion. I asked several times if she wanted an honest answer because she may not want to hear what I had to say. She and my colleagues were very insistent that I contribute regardless of my protestations and embarrassment. So I did. I said, this is not a criticism. What you do in the privacy of your own home does not impact upon my life. It is a hypothetical question. How would you feel if you came home and found your husband in bed with another woman? Would it "only be a laugh" to be shared with your colleagues? Or would you be devastated? She said, I would drag her out and rip her face off. I asked why, when the girl is not in your relationship and she may not be aware of you, however, your husband is in a relationship with you? Why aren't you dragging him out and ripping his face off? Or not at all, as it is only a "laugh" after all. As I expected my colleagues were no longer laughing, but the lady in question was not offended by my reply given my pre-warning, and they all knew me well enough that I really did not care about what they they got up to because it did not affect my personal life. I never understand this kind of personal sharing between women given that those they confide in with confidence later negatively gossip about their 'friend's' situation when they are not present. The video content is in regards to team work and group collaboration and that females learn to share as children to which I have reflected upon from my own personal experience and not a criticism of individuals I have not had continual contact with.

When you think in a group, you can only think inside the box. Creative ventures and the cutting edge/entirely new concepts are impossible in a group. I'm a software engineer and i can't stand group meetings where we must come up with ideas together. I much prefer to come up with our own ideas first, _then_ meet up and discuss everyone's ideas. When I am introduced to an idea, i find it difficult to come up with something else... It's like my creativity has become tainted. I am anchored to the idea already shown to me. But if it's a blank canvas with no other ideas to go on, then my imagination is the limit...

Though this was nicely presented, showing the potential positive outcomes from people connecting their brains, so to apeak, it can also work in reverse. It really should be explored with a generous amount of caution. It isn't always negative, but it can be. What about groupthink - not always so great, b/c the "group" can get stuck on reenforcing itself and lose sight of many important things. What about individual creativity? This can be enhanced, but also held back, by connecting with others.

Child mortality used to be over 50%, the weakest of us and least healthy used to die out and not reproduce; since the industrial revolution and with medical advancements it's dropped to below 5%. Basically we're just allowing the spread of unhealthy genetics to permiate into the population. @@TwistedSoul2002 Well, I wanted to say that. Depends on the definition of lone thinker, I guess. Of course everyone’s educated by our ancestors knowledge. But you gotta admit that People who had scientific breakthrough did think somehow out of the box, though … That’s how progress is achieved. I would say, you’re both right. It took a lot of people thinking out of the box to build the necessary knowledge for Einstein to come up with the Relativity theory. But again that depends on the definition of lone thinker. Many geniuses in their domain were and are absolute idiots when it comes to things out of their area of expertise. Which may qualify someone as a lone thinker now that I think about it.

Is the part about brain waves synchronizing even true? I hope they weren't just thrown off by equal levels of relaxation in the aggregate of many signals... hopefully they in fact synchronized distinct waves in amplitude and time on a proper o-scope. That would be nuts if true and would answer so many questions.

If IQs were increasing without the innovations considered at the end of this video, it would make sense to look at why those IQs were increasing without those innovations. It would also make sense to be more critical with regard to the concept of IQs (tests were developed in particular cultural circumstances for particular reasons). It would also make sense to consider privacy concerns re the sharing of (or expectation that we share) our thoughts and experiences to that extent - telepathy would be a pretty major shift in society, and potentially dystopian.

Hey, if iQ was increasing over time until 1970s and women listening etc. improves the synchronisation, why has womens increased participation in the workplave coincided with lower iQ scores? Surely their increased participation should've boosted it? This doesnt seem to add up Edit: I say workplace above, but women's influence across the board is far higher than it was in the 1970s and beforehand. Workplace was an example
