    I hope this becomes a series, we’ve gotten no bomb weapons this season so I think people would need these guides… Curious to see what you would say about sprinkler, other than just “throw it on the ground lol”

    I'm assuming that Pika would talk about how sprinklers can protect you in gunfights and camp the top of walls for faster kills. Something like that.

    Know sprinkler spots, use it as a shield, use it for mobility, use it to help camp landings (this one is SUPER FUNNY def recommend), throw inside rainmaker shield, use it as a distraction in fights if you're "not like other girls". That's kinda it.

    The distraction sprinkler is my favorite out of them all. It reminds me of the distraction sentry in tf2 and was the sole reason I mained the Nzap and brush with sprinkler in S2

    @@sherbertshortkake6649 Yeah, if you use it to its full potential it can sometimes not be completely useless, even decent at times. For example, when I use Dynamo Roller in Rainmaker, I can compete with other weapons at popping the Rainmaker shield by setting up my Sprinkler inside it. This allows me to not be a detriment to my team, and capitalize better on the Tacticooler, which is great for Rainmaker.

    sprinkler has quite a few uses on some weapons but (in my opinion) is weaker in this game than the last 2. But here a few things it can do to help 1. Camp Super Jumps (you have to get it JUST right) 2. Do full damage to rainmaker (throw it where rainmaker shield will expand to and it very generous object damage) 3. Use it as a decoy to block a shot or two from shooter/splatling/charger weapons 4. Throw it near or behind an enemy in a 1v1 to distract them or do 20 damage 5. Throw it in a very hard to hit spot to waste your enemy's time (useless at high level but useful in casual) 6. Throw the sprinkler in spots that enemy's have to pass through that they'll have to break thud distracting them (examples include under the main platoform on eetail where enemies pass from spawn to mid and the large circle-thing held by an excavator in mid on sturgeon shipyard) 7. Insta paint a portion of a wall that might take a long time for weapons like dynamo to do Overall I'd say it's not that useful aside from helping weapons with low paint increase special output but it does have a few niche cases. If I were nintendo here's what I'd do but this is all hypothetical of course * Sprinklers launched facing upward no longer slows down after being thrown (strengthens paint) * Radius of damage inside sprinkler where every shot hits players is roughly doubled (makes super jump camps more consistent) * Sub Power Up gear ability increases damage of every sprinkler shot (capped at 33) as well as sprinkler health (capped at +100%)

    I’d like to see your opinion on sprinkler. Hitzel developed a playstyle with nzap 83 in Splatoon 2 where it would use the sprinkler to help it stubbornly paint forwards. Throwing the sprinkler out almost like its a torpedo (something else for the enemy to shoot at).

    One other thing: Toxic mist can be a great area denial tool for any movement that requires a jump to be made (Ex: the jump on Sturgeon RM). There, it just completely nullifies the ability for the enemy to access certain areas.

    I’m glad you’re using the term “utility sub” rather than the more common “nonlethal sub”. It paints it in a more positive “this has uses outside of simply making the opponents cease to exist” rather than “this is an inherently poor sub because it can’t easily splat or threaten a splat”. That’s why I’m a fan of Angle Shooter. It rarely kills, but the range, chip damage, and location tracking makes it ideal for pressuring backlines away from their preferred positions, even if only for a second or two. That can be all you need in many instances.

    I've played tri-slosher in S and S+ and people avoid and are more hindered by mist in S or lower ranks. The debuff is kinda avoidable with a squid roll or relocating elsewhere. But it is possible to spam it on a good snipe point or another choke point. This won't work as well on every map but you can really prevent the enemy from advancing really well sometimes. Though I gotta say at higher levels people know how to counter it better and play around it to not get hindered by it as much, and the teams being more organized can strike you better.

  • @jermm2183
    @jermm2183 Жыл бұрын

    you forgot one very important thing: Squid rolling. At a low level it won't matter but the only reason it worked in that particular clip on inkblot was the left and right chokepoints to spawn make it so you have no momentum to squid roll. Otherwise a booyah + tristrike would have succeeded in that push with plenty of time. Not here to be a negativist but I do agree with the sentiment that bombs are (generally) better sub weapons than utility subs (with exception to disrupter, I absolutely loved disrupter.) But the reason I bring that up though is that when using toxic mist to stall a chokepoint you need to also plan ahead to not allow the enemy to squid roll through 3/4 of your mist. If you have jet then you would have to pressure the area near chokepoint for example but on zini you would need your teammates to help with that. Toxic mist is my favorite of the utility subs though and this guide covers basically everything I learned from my 1500 or so hours of splatoon 2 and 3 about it (I mostly used L3, L3D, Bamboo mk1, and mk3 but i did use mk2 to about 150k and it worked surprisingly well with mist.) I hope Nintendo does 2 things to it in the future 1. Toxic mist has an additional affect where there is a perimeter (about one unit away from mist) and beyond that unit you cannot squid roll (this will make it so a weapon with about 2 mains of swim speed should be able to only squid roll through about half the mist) 2. Sub power up increases radius on top of throwing range. This would help it keep up with non-utility subs as while you are right that it is a good tool, it falls short to what a burst bomb or fizzy bomb can do to almost every weapon in the cast

One of my favourite uses was cutting off movement options when dueling someone around a cushion or other small piece of cover. It’s very affirming to hear you mention a lot of the same uses i had discovered for it. My main takeaway is a reminder that it survives booyah bombs and ink strikes Edit: forgot to mention, i appreciate the Custom Robo bgm

    Utility sub can be very good, my favourite use of one is nova's point sensor. Since the nova is best played as a support at mid to front line for its inking speed while having good range you can reveal enemies from far away on the map and allow your more aggressive players reach the enemy easily but also doesn't have to search for them

    I mean a 200p tristrike on vanilla slosher when there's 190p ttek already makes it a risky choice for a team comp so if you're gonna run slosher I'd be looking at decos's niche anyway. slosher deco already works well with zipcaster so it's a very strong weapon (plus its kit and main have low gear dependance making it great for feeding.) I suspect its niche will be fully taken over by the new tetras as most teams are gonna want to use machine instead of slosher anyway and with an overall superior main weapon with a near identical role and kit slosher deco too will be outclassed. Not to say you shouldn't go have fun with it in solo que though, it's a great weapon!

    I really appreciate the section on using it aggressively - I play a lot of Cjet, and tend to play it more as a midline that can switch to anchor if neccecary, and a tip for this is to use mist to space enemies - Cjet has pretty solid DPS and can outrange a lot of frontline threats, and mist can discourage people from getting in that ideal range quite well - either when slayers try to take you out, or you are playing more frontline.

    I've seen several comments about squid rolls "countering" toxic mists so I'll just put my thoughts here: simply put I don't think that's all that true in context LOL. It's certainly true that you can squid roll from outside of mists into them and preserve your momentum, though that's rarely going to get you through all the way so long as the mist user is smart about when and where their mists are placed, just another reason why I placed such a large emphasis on those concepts in the first place. You're still likely to get caught halfway into the mist given how wide they can be if placed right, and you'll still activate the audio giving away your approach + your escape route out against anyone on the other side will be cut off by the mist that's still there. It's a neat trick for sure, but if the mist user has a proper plan/setup with how they're using mists it shouldn't change the outcome of any fights/pushes very often. Definitely should've mentioned it in the vid though

  • @DragonOfSummer
    @DragonOfSummer Жыл бұрын

    Loved this! I had no idea the mist could go through walls O_O. That's so useful. I've mostly been using it to harass backliners and tower riders. The difference in opinion of bombs and utility subs is fascinating from a game design perspective. I don't know how good or bad they are in practise, but bombs have an advantage over utility subs in being very clear in what they do. Creating immediate and satisfying results. So whenever you design something more passive or complicated, it's a question of "how do I make this as satisfying as a bomb". I remember throwing a Toxic Mist the first time and going "well, what's that do?". Even after reading the description it didn't feel satisfying to utilize, and you encounter it so rarely in casual play that you don't notice the effects. It's only now that I've picked up the Jet and Stringer (I'm just B rank, so have mercy) that I'm noticing how fun it can be. Throwing out ideas here, but I wonder if this sub would like an UI effect. Like how the screen blots out when taking damage, there could be a slight fade for mist. Not enough to impair vision, but enough to make players uncomfortable and hammer home that "you don't wanna stand here". Another idea is to make them more prominent in the hero campaign.

    I have been playing with the Custom Jet a lot recently, and I find that using toxic mist aggressively like the tri helps lessen the likelihood of opponents swimming out of my range, considering that the Custom Jet has a slower kill time than many fellow shooters. As a more anchor-y weapon, using throwing toxic mist at popular flank routes (when they exist) also helps inform me if there is anyone trying to flank the team. I think the Custom Jet is a really fun kit, and probably it is going to be my first 5-star weapon

    Use Killer Wail when your team is pushing, you can also Toxic Mist + Killer Wail + Toxic Mist again so that they become slowed and are more vulnerable to Wail. For Tri-Stringer, try and keep everything painted, it makes it way easier to get kills by spamming your bombs which also makes it harder for the other team to push and as a bonus it helps your team out by giving them room to move. Dont think linear, like a charger, and use your arcs to your advantage weather it be full or half charge shots

    Using Toxic Mist on the person with the Rainmaker, or just slapping it on a freshly-popped Rainmaker, makes this sub so good in that mode alone. I'm honestly surprised how few people do it because of how many games my teams have won because I just said "no" to the enemy's push.

    as a tri stringer main, i think the main thing about this sub is that its kinda redundant. the thing tri stringer does most well is hold a line. if theres an area where a tri stringer can get a single shot off, a good tri stringer can stop pretty much any weapon in its tracks with partial charges. toxic mist does the same thing but without the splat threat. it helps with wail combos, but beyond that, its main use is a lot weaker. it still helps when people get on top of you, but its nothing that couldnt be accomplished better by a splat bomb

    I think all Toxic Mist needs in order to be good is for the debuffs to last for 1 extra second after you leave the mist. A big problem with toxic mist is that you can easily Squid Roll through it and basically ignore the slow effect entirely. But if you were still slowed for 1 second after you leave the mist, this could be far more dangerous, and mist would just be more useful overall.

    if utility subs were overall just better at their utility it wouldn't be an issue in comp. In solo que bombs are almost always gonna be preferred as they're more individualistic, but as utility subs thrive in coordination with teammates you should expect utility subs to be liked more in competitive than casual. The reason they're not is that they simply just don't do enough compared to what bombs do for you now. I can assure you a div X player will know better than anyone how to make the most out of their kit to contribute to winning the game and if bombs are universally preferred to those players then it is on nintendo to make them stronger. A radius increase is a good buff though. Personally I think countering the ability to squid roll through mist and sub power up being able to increase mist radius would be good changes to make it a useful sub in some map-mode combinations like inkblot cb and undertow rm

    Tri-Stringer main here. I almost never use Toxic Mist. If I want to prevent enemies from moving through a chokepoint or in a particular area, I just shoot explosive bolts there, which costs a whole lot less ink and do damage. I am confused why I would generally use a 60% sub that doesn't do damage, doesn't fully prevent them from moving through, and realistically doesn't do that much ink drain either. I think the only places it makes sense are grates and uninkable chokes like the art academy ramp as shown by the CJet in the video. Particularly grates since you can't shoot explosive bolts onto them.

    Ways toxic mist would describe itself in one sentence Every so often, you get that one little b-ch that camps a choke point with me ready to pop other people’s sh-. Rainmaker carriers hate me, because it makes them move like molasses thanks to them already being slow.

    Nothing new for me, but I love Toxic Mist since Splatoon 2. I am a huge fan of utility subs and the best Splash-o-Matic for me is from Splatoon 2 with Toxic Mist and Inkjet. To be honest I don't play in comps and I don't care about the opinions from "pro" players. I hear about pro and cons about the subs, but mostly you hear only cons about a utility sub. I think with Splatoon 3 weird kits, pro players slowly start to think differently about this subs, but bombs are easier to use, so less thinking and less adjustment of old playstyle habits. That's my "casual" hot take about that. 😜

    The splatoon comp scene has some of the most stubborn narrow minded people, especially at the lower levels. So we need more top players encouraging people to try new things and experiment. Thanks for the awesome video!

    If anything I think the comp season is anything but narrow minded. At launch everything was being figured out and splash was basically the equivalent to tri slosher S2 launch so everyone and their dog played splash and then machine to counter splash/for it's kit. It should also be noted that in comp subs such as point sensor and ink mine are genuinely not that useful as you can just call out enemy locations. Ultimately what keeps you and your team alive is what is prioritized when it comes to sub weapons and utility subs generally just don't provide the same amount of use as most lethal subs do. Currently now that splash and machine have been toned back the competitive scene is going under constant change and what is played and not played changes all the time. Tri-noveau, carbon deco, ballpoint splatling, and nautilus for example are all seeing prominence in the competitive scene just to name a few, especially ballpoint. If I were a betting man I would say that the new wiper kit will shake up the meta even more and we might even see crapid in some map combinations for the inkjet missiles combo. If nothing changed in the minds of the players it is very likely that most div X teams would be sticking to double splash double machine

    @@jermm2183 Can't disagree with those points, they are fair and separate more coordinated teams (up to div X) from those at the lower levels. The thing is, at the lower level a lot of us are at, people don't actually consider *why* things are the way they are, they don't think about why things like utility subs aren't as valuable as lethal bombs outside of "this pro player said so." Does the scene change? Yes, but do people's attitudes and reasoning change? Not really. People move weapons and change up team comps but imo that doesn't change the narrow minded reasoning that's seen. It's why I think a video like this that encourages creative thinking and off meta ideas is great. I'm willing to admit that I could just have been on the wrong side of the community, but anything that diverges from the comp hivemind is appreciated.

    @@SomePersonalUploads mhm I've always had that same thought too. For example on inkjet I always thought people were too hard on it and that is had genuine potential when a crab wasn't active in controlling space. Also for ballpoint I never got the hype as fizzy bomb has very little synergy with the main weapon aside from painting at a distance, area control (which it already is amazing at anyway,) and maybe as a combo tool in niche situations. The main weapon is just REALLY good and inkjet can now deal with crab after the buff in my eyes. But yes I do know what you mean, but that is across more than splatoon. It is very unlikely there would be as many range blaster players in solo que as there are for example if not for ProChara as the main weapon is rather average (if not below average,) has some of the highest (if not THE highest) gear dependency of any weapon, and can't paint enough to have reliable special output. In the case of subs though I can get what you mean in a div 5 and below team, but in solo que it should go without saying lethal subs are universally preferred due to their more individualistic play style compared to utility subs and their ability to help win fights. You can make an argument for subs like point sensor as location is very useful in solo que but you rarely see players that use such weapons apart from maybe an explo in zones and an occasional squiffer.

    @@jermm2183 Appreciate the thoughtful and polite response. And I didn’t mean this was was an only splatoon issue, I’ve seen it across a fair amount of genres. It was only mentioned here for the context of the video. The RB is a really good example, and it became similar with BP (since in early s3 it was considered a sort of mismatched kit on the type of weapon). But things like BP due to its kit and 2 firing modes can support a very different sort of aggressive backline play style, which was dismissed until a few videos on it were made. In X rank it went from seeing one every few rounds to 2 per team at some points consistently. Hell, I’ve been in low level tournaments where I was the only BP before. There is no doubt that lethal bombs are amazing in solo queue, but I still want to see more people at lower levels trying things out, especially at the tournament level where they have team support.

    First I’m so happy you covered the uses of toxic mist and some mechanics that some players might not know of. Second I’m genuinely tired of people in the community dogging on utility subs, people only going over the negatives and discourage people from using weapons with said sub. Third im also glad you covered both defensive and offensive uses of toxic mist, giving insight to the versatility of the sub. Lastly the usage of toxic mist on specials like tri-strike and booya bomb was something I’ve never thought of and something I will definitely try out in future games. Overall I love how you covered toxic mist and looked at all the uses for it and I’m super excited to see more videos on utility subs since I play a lot of weapons with them!! :]
