    Thanks so much for this video. My unexpected bottle lamb is thriving on this milk. A tip for those who don't have a hot water cupboard somewhere that is constantly warm. We do our 3 litre batches in a lidded 5 litre bucket that we sit inside a larger (10 litre) bucket. 1. Mix your milk in the small bucket 2. Fill the bigger bucket with just enough warm water that when you put the smaller one inside it the water come above milk level but obviously doesn't spill over (its not much water) . 3. Put a small (cheap at Kmart or the like) aquarium heater (max temp is usually 35 - 40 degrees) in the water and you basically have a water bath at a constant temp.

    I've watched nearly all your videos on sheep. I have to say, you are absolutely amazing! The amount of valuable information in these videos is incredible. Honestly the best explanation I've ever been given of this condition. My pet lamb died last night when I was sleeping- I presume it was this that happened. My other pet lamb is now being fed very small feeds 12 - 14 times a day. I have the luxury of being able to do that. The only time she will be without is the 5 hours at night. ❤

    Great to see the video to confirm the latest and up to date way of doing this! Just a query.... on the info sheet that your link goes to, it appears to miss a step?? After adding yoghurt and leaving overnight, it just says remove the yoghurt to use for next time, stir, then it's ready to use. But don't you need to top up with more water? 200g/L, and if you add 1kg of powder at start you should technically need to end up with 5L of milk at the end right? Should the recipe say to top up with water to the 5L mark on the bucket then use? :-).

    Thanks for the information. How often do you recommend feeding yoghurtised milk to healthy bottle fed lambs prior to r at time of weaning or should it only be used as a treatment for a recognised condition?

    Hi, I have been using Greek yoghurt (which contains the L. bacillus) but my milk comes out creamy not separated except for a skin on the top. Lambs seem to be doing wonderfully on it and no signs of bloat though. I am not confident to scoop the top and call it the starter as not sure it is really working the way it should so am making up fresh batch every day and a half with fresh yoghurt. A question I had was can I use an Easiyo natural unsweetened yoghurt sachet, using 1/5th of the contents (which makes 1kg) added to the 4L warm milk mixture and then leave overnight in a warm environment? Thank you

    Great video and subject. Actually the confusion I have is why they always use grams of powder milk to add to litters. To solve this problem, I weighed one cup by volume of powder milk, and I found it about 150 gm of powder milk. So if the milk brand says 100 gm for a litter, I make one and a half litter of milk from one cup by volume of powdered milk. Do you agree?

    What's the difference between this and just feeding them yogurt? I feel like the process is exactly the same except you are fermenting longer so that the curds and the whey separate. Can I feed my baby goats a goats' milk yogurt that I make at home?

    Hi Sez, I am wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with bloat whilst feeding yoghurtised milk? I have a 5 week old that has been on yoghurtised milk for a week after looking a little bloaty. He initially looked better for it but now is starting to puff up a bit again. He’s only on about 140ml 5 x day and weighs 7.1kg. He looks good in the Morning and then gradually looks more bloated during the day. He is on grass during the day and has access to grass hay and a small amount of pellets. Stressing too much about this lamb. I have 4 and he is the only one that looks bloaty. Any advice appreciated 😊Cheers

    Can this be done to any brand of lamb milk replacer (does protein source make a difference?)? I’m in Canada and haven’t heard of this done before. Thanks

    If your only feeding 1 lamb can you make up a couple of litres of the yogurtised milk and save it in the fridge for a couple of days so you don’t have to make it fresh every time? How long does the yogurtised milk last in the fridge? Thanks!

    Does it need to incubate for the full 12-24 hours to eliminate all the lactose or will 8 hours be enough? We don't have a hotwater cupboard so incubating using the oven light method, but it's not big enough for my full batch, so I made half this morning. Just pulled it out (8.5h later) and it looks and smells like yoghurt... would like to start the next batch but not wanting to cause any harm with insufficient incubation times...

    If I’m switching to yogurtised formula after the lambs are already a few weeks old, do I need to introduce it in smaller quantities than their usual bottle?

    Hi there I have watched almost all of your videos on lambs, so informative thank you! Just a quick question - on the recipe it says 3l water 1kg of powder. But that’s different from what you just did with this video 1 litre to 200g powder. Do you mind explaining as I can’t figure out if I’m doing it right! I have been halving the recipe to 1.5l water and 500g of powder. Thanks Amanda

    Hi Amanda, the 1kg powder doesn't line up with 1L of fluid, so when you add 1kg powder plus the yogurt you end up pretty close to 5L. But I've had this question a lot so will add a step that says top up to 5L. Good on you for picking up on it :)

    Thank you for your very well explained video, much appreciated. A few questions: you feed it cold - as in straight from the fridge or room temperature? It looks really lumpy, does that feed ok without blocking up the teat? Also should bottle feeding equipment be sterilised like babies bottles or is just washed well with hot soapy water and rinsed well ok? Thanks.

    Glad you enjoyed it, Justine. Yes, cold, from the fridge. Room temperature leaves it open to the risk of growing other nasty bacteria in there. Yes, it's lumpy. You can mix it longer and a bit better than what I did, but most people will trim the end of the teat slightly larger so it flows well. Feeding equipment just wash well, doesn't need to be fully sterilised like human baby bottles. Hope that helps!

    @@SeztheVet thank you. I have my first batch in the cylinder cupboard now. I must admit I feel quite nervous about feeding it for the first time, it seems counterintuitive to feed milk that’s been sitting in the warm for 24 hours! What if the temperature in the cupboard wasn’t hot enough and it hasn’t worked properly? Or what if the cracked open jar lid let other bad bacteria in?

    Couple of questions..once my milk is yourtized, how do i feed? I am brand new at raising lambs and am desperately trying to learn. 2nd question..can i heat the milk on low to speed up the process or does it have to be 12 to 24 hours?

    Given they just love it warm and it helps trigger the baby chamber would it be ok to quickly warm it a bit on the stove right before you feed them? Or can bad bacteria grow even within a minute?

    You can warm it slightly if you'd like. The research hasn't been done, but theories behind feeding cold are that it wont grow nasties (but the stomach is warm anyway, so the theory's a bit lacking in my opinion). Otherwise people feed cold to prevent guzzling, especially if using an ad-lib system on farm. My personal opinion is that I can't image it makes a whole of difference if you've made and stored it cold, warming just before giving. Warm slowly and gently of course, so as not to disrupt the nutritional composition.

    Thank you so so much for this video. It's the first video that I've found on how to yoghurtise milk which is fabulous as I'm not good with reading instructions! Looks like I'm actually following the method correctly but mine never seems to yoghurtise. I've used three different types of acidophalus yoghurt with the same result. Sometimes it's a bit lumpy on the top but then I mix it in and it goes just a little bit thicker than their stanard milk replacer. The only thing I can attribute it to is I'm using a 7L rectangular Sistema container with a lid - is this sufficient or should it be narrower? I'm worried that with my 'failed' yoghurtisation I'm doing more harm than good! Also, the Biosupport you talk of, should this be used in conjunction with yoghurtised milk or as an alternative? I see it's also mentioned in the weaning video. Is this a must-have when weaning and should it be used in place of yoghurtising or with the yoghurtised milk? Finally (sorry for the hundred questions but I'm new at this!), my lambs are seven weeks old and on 3 x 350ml bottles a day. Can I start reducing to 2 x 350ml feeds? They are feeding over 200g each of NRM Lamb Start Mix a day but have only had one vaccine and haven't had a drench yet. Thank you so much for all your help - you're a true life saver. Sorry about the novel! I've never reared lambs before!

    Hi, thanks for the message, glad you enjoyed the episode. In answer to your questions it shouldn't matter what the shape of the container is. So long as there is lactose (sugar source) in the milk, then the bacteria will eat it and thrive. My guess is that the environment is not warm enough. You can leave it in the warmth for 48 hrs to encorouge further bacteria growth. Probiotic (eg biosupport) can be used in addition, thats not a concern. Although if you're fully yogurtising, there is much less need for it. The more healthy bacteria we can have in there the better, to prevent any nasty bacteria from taking hold. I mention it in the weaning checklist becuase weaning is such a high risk time for abomasal bloat, as those volumes of milk have often gotten very high. Yes you can start reducing the volumes now. To be honest, I'd probably start by reducing the volumes. 350mL makes me quite nervous for risk of bloat. I know that's what the packets often say, but it's a shockingly large volume and this is when we see spikes of abomasal bloat. Aim to start weaning at 8 weeks and take it slow over a couple of weeks to be nice :) Up to you how you do it, but so long as you're decreasing volumes and decreasing number of feeds, you're following what a muma ewe would naturally do. Nevermind about drench for the moment, we usually do the first about 12 weeks old, bascially a couple of weeks after they've weaned. Well done and good luck!

    @@SeztheVet Thank you so much. I've just bought some Biosupport but it says to add it to warm milk. Is it okay to add it to yoghurtised milk straight from the fridge? Can it be added when yoghurtising the milk at the very start or do I add it just before each feed?

    Add it to the bottle just before feeding. It will warm up in the stomach fairly quickly and promote healthy bacterial growth:)

    If you’re worried about temperature you could try our method with a water bath and an aquarium heater. We don’t have anywhere we can maintain a high enough temp to be sure the yogurt gets all the lactose but using this we get a nice thick bubbled mix. Once we take our starter and mix it again it’s a bit thicker than milk replacer like cream vs milk

    Hi, we have 20 lambs on the bottle at the moment, and a couple have tried to bloat on me! I have never heard of this method in aus so keen to try and hope to see improvements, how long will this keep for? I think I'll be mixing something close to 20 ltrs a day but may have left overs. how long can you keep using starter from each batch, until you have to use fresh yoghurt?

    So long as it doesn't spoil, you can keep using the starter until the dusk of time :)

    Iv made two lots now and both have gone a bit thicker but still runny, the yogurt is not very thick to start with more like double cream is the right

    Hi Rosemary. It should go thicken the longer you use it. Will also depend on hot warm the environment is and how concentrated the population of bacteria is the in probiotic. If it smells like yogurt you're on the right track

    Feeding cold: Thanks Sez, I have been using this method of yogurtizing milk successfully for a few lambing seasons. It also worked for 6 bottle-fed orphan kittens from 8 days old to weaning, all of whom were not tolerating the formula well. They immediately recovered and all have wonderful homes now. My question is could you please clarify about feeding it cold, especially to lambs? Lambs are in indoor shelter, and I'm in Canada and do not supply a heat source, so I feel unsure about feeding cold.... Is that refrigerator cold or room temperature cold? Thanks! Appreciate your videos.

    Hi Candy-Jane. The research hasn't been done, but theories behind feeding cold are that it wont grow nasty bacteria when yogurtised (but the stomach is warm anyway, so the theory's a bit lacking in my opinion). Otherwise people feed cold to prevent guzzling, especially if using an ad-lib system on farm. My personal opinion is that I can't image it makes a whole of difference if you've made and stored it cold, warming just before giving, if they're getting individual amounts at a controlled rate to prevent guzzling (ie appropraite teat size). Warm slowly and gently of course, so as not to disrupt the nutritional composition.

    Sometimes, but not necessarily. If it has live cultures in it it will boast it on the label.

    Hi I have tried this but after 24hrs the milk looks exactly the same, not like yours on the video. Does that mean its failed and best not to use? Thanks

    Doesn't sound like it's worked... hmm, the temperature may not be warm enough, or the yogurt may not be acidophilus?
