    E are looking at different schools at this point. There is nothing offered from the school tuition and if they take away her room and board I don’t see the point of giving them any of the scholarships we might win. We took a hiatus to try and figure out our next steps. Maybe another Q/A with DFD/The Scholarship System. Those are so helpful for specific questions and brain storming. I realize e went from early admission with 3 acceptance to being so late in the game waiting for the schools to decide on financial aid offers that we may end up with little too no aid/or scholarship for the first year. Very disappointing. Thank you for your help. Katherine

    What to do when they haven’t sent a financial aid packet yet? Does that mean they aren’t planning on offering my daughter anything? If that’s the case then 109% of scholarships would be applied to her tuition/room/board/meal plan and essentials. There would be nothing to take away. Doesn’t seem right.

    I had NO idea of anything like this until this past summer when a college bill was presented to me. It’s not like the financial department said “hey let’s talk about HOW we can provide for her” My daughter, a junior this semester, had some sort of refund coming to her since day one. It was paying for her books and a few expenses. This semester of nursing was way more expensive and we actually owed 😮. Honestly I do not find the financial aid department forthcoming in much information to help my daughter to succeed. To me that’s sad. Maybe they aren’t meant to be helpful? I don’t know. I’ve been ignorant but always trying to understand. Thank you for these videos and helping me/us understand the process better!

    Hello this video was very helpful and enlightening. I do have a question though. So, just recently I've applied for FASFA and this go round it gave the option to leave out parental finances. But in return I have to write a paragraph to financial aid describing why I haven't provided my parents information. Can I follow this same template for this situation or is there another way that I can approach this situation? Thanks 😌

  • @TheScholarshipSystem

    @TheScholarshipSystem

    2 жыл бұрын

    Parental information is required on FAFSA unless you are an independent student. Your paragraph should provide evidence of being an independent student. The Financial Aid Appeal letter should be used AFTER you have received a financial aid package from your school.

    While you won't be appealing FAFSA, there is a chance that there is some sort of appeal or letter you can write to try and get more funding from internal scholarships or grants. The best place to start is with the financial aid office.

    i feel like schools also base their decisions on whether we have a 529 education plan or not. is this a question on fafsa i think i remember it asking this and feeling like i had to answer honestly that we have a 529.

  • @TheScholarshipSystem

    @TheScholarshipSystem

    2 жыл бұрын

    All questions should be answered honestly. 529 education plans are considered investments under the parents' financial information. The amount in the account will affect EFC about 5%. The biggest factors that affect financial aid are parents' income, students' income, and student assets.

    The university my daughter wants to attend will deduct scholarship monies from the money they will give to her. It doesn’t make much sense to gain scholarship money if the university is going to deduct it from their offer. You can’t get ahead this way. Any suggestions?

  • @TheScholarshipSystem

    @TheScholarshipSystem

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's ridiculous. First, remember they must remove from loans first. I'd confirm this with them! Second, I'd consider another university. That's a huge disadvantage - i.e. I received more and more money each year I was in college. I would've had to forfeit tens of thousands of dollars! Lastly, perhaps you can ask the scholarship committee to send the money directly to your student. You still have to claim it on taxes of course - they should send a 1099 form for that.
