WRITING MY NOVEL: How to write when you don't feel like it
Hello and welcome to my latest video in my 'How I'm writing my novel' series. You can see all the previous videos in this playlist:

In this video I'm addressing the difficulty I have in starting a writing session. When I'm doing other things I dream of hours of uninterrupted writing time - then when I sit down to start I procrastinate and find so many other things to do instead.
I have issues! Fear of failure, fear of success and being massively out of my comfort zone.
So - I trick myself with the 20-minute timer method or, more commonly known as the pomodoro technique. It works every time.
I chat about the technique for a while and then show how I put it into practice with index cards and dividing the last two acts of my novel into chapters.

Great video! When you were sharing your struggles I kept nodding my head because that’s me. I have been using this technique on all tasks that overwhelm me. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼

Ah thank you. I knew as I was saying it that others would understand!

This is SO very relatable 😆!! Sometimes it’s like I have to literally flog myself into my chair to write. And then I get the words done and I’m all “why didn’t I just do that sooner it was so fun?” 😂. Recently I’ve started writing first thing in the morning - at ungodly-o’clock - so that I don’t get a chance to get distracted. So far, so good. 🥰

I am loving this series! I know you were focusing on the Pomadoro method, but could you elaborate on what you use the different colors of pens for?

Your describing your struggles sounds just like me and what I deal with. I mean you been waiting all day to write and then your day goes by and nothing gets done. I think you are right about tricking yourself to get things done. This method sounds useful.

Helen, I find this applicable to my own life and not just with writing, but with many of my creative endeavors especially if they are new for and therefore somehow terrifying. ;)

I relate to everything you were saying! I suffer with depression as well so those self defeating thoughts are very powerful in my head. The 20 minute technique is a new idea I never heard of before. Thank you so much! I hope this will help me with NaNoWriMo!

I think it’d be perfect for nano. A few concentrated sessions and you’ll be getting those words down. Good luck with it!
