    *** One thing I forgot to mention. While programming harmonies in Grid Mode is an amazing tool for arranging/demos, I don't suggest you use them on a final product. I'm singing all the parts in the video. Programmed parts do not appear anywhere incase anyone gets confused and thinks programmed harmonies will sound like this. They will not :( ***

    Yes I was wondering about that, thanks for clarifying. I can see the sense in being able to play with the harmonies exact contour in midi mode though rather than having to rerecord every single variation.. To do it this way I assume you're just copying off the lead vocal each time to a separate channel and editing the Grid mode individually?

    First off, we have the same exact water bottle... Second, this is literally the ONLY comprehensive guide I have been able to find online on writing multi-part harmonies. Everything else never went any deeper than just singing the 3rd and 5th, and everybody who I’ve seen writing huge harmonies with tons and tons of layers (ie. Jacob Collier) seems to just do it completely by ear. Thanks so much for this in depth explanation. I’ll definitely be rewatching! Also, the puppet show was the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. 😂

    Hi Joe, super video! Just a question, are all lines panned central? I thought some lines should be doubled L/R. I have a three part harmony with doubling on the main line (both line C/C) and then two panned left and right (two individual takes, singing the same line, one panned L and one R). So all in all 6 lines , but it sounds pretty flat/not powerful? So I was wondering if you pan everything all center, or how do you do it?

    Question: Great video by the way - just wondering are all vocals recorded - mutiple different takes by the same singer at the same key, but then the harmonies pitched up or down as per autotune / tuning software. Ive always been struggling to get something as tight as these, especially as some notes are very difficult to sing when you the further away the key is from the lead. Also do you by any chance use revoice or vocalign to tighten your vocals or you do do everything manually? and also is autotune better than melodyne for this purpose ? thank you very much for the tutorial / tips!

  • @JoeQuick

    @JoeQuick

    2 жыл бұрын

    All the vocals are sung. I don’t use any type of time alignment software. If someone had problems with timing I would just make sure I had them do enough takes that I’d be able to comp together a good performance. I prefer autotune over melodyne both for the ease of use and the sound quality.

    So, just to be clear, you're skipping part of the process each time in the video, right? Moving the piano roll notes doesn't actually change your vocal notes, correct? I'm guessing you're moving the piano notes around and playing back the part on the piano track until you're satisfied, then making the same changes to the vocal notes on the auto-tune graph, right? Or am I missing a really cool feature that links the vocal notes to the piano roll somehow?

  • @JoeQuick

    @JoeQuick

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm singing all the parts in the video, they aren't programmed. Sorry if that was confusing. Programmed harmonies wouldn't sound like this unfortunately. I just use the Grid Mode harmonies when I'm doing an arrangement, so I don't have to demo things before doing the final. You can route midi notes to the input of Autotune from a piano roll but because of the vocals not being grid accurate it would likely glitch out alot.

  • @mikefox6211

    @mikefox6211

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JoeQuick So in reality, you're hearing the piano track play your proposed changes to the arrangement while you're brainstorming. It's not until you're happy with the arrangement that you record each vocal line on the mic, correct? The video was making me think you could drag each harmony note around and hear the vocal lines change instantly. (Great voice, by the way.)

  • @JoeQuick

    @JoeQuick

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mikefox6211 Thanks :) It still is what you're thinking. So basically the process will go like this. I'll do the arrangement in the piano roll on midi piano. Once I think it's finalized I'll load the demo melody into Grid Mode on Autotune. I'll then duplicate that track 2 times if I was doing a 3 part arrangement. I'd then write in the top voice in Grid Mode on Autotune and write in the bottom voice on the other track in Grid Mode of Autotune. Now I can hear the whole 3 part arrangement with voices and have access to move around the notes on each of them if need be. Then I'll record the parts for real once everything is good.
