It may seem counterintuitive, but comedy is often key to a serious story. As a writer, you need your audience to experience a range of emotions, no matter what your genre. Comic relief is a tried-and-true way of creating the varied emotional texture a compelling story needs. So how can you create this effect in your own stories? Jodie Houlston-Lau shares some tips for lightening the mood.

If you want to see comic relief in action, we highly recommend Trevor Noah's memoir, “Born A Crime.” In it, the comedian and Daily Show host recounts coming-of-age during South African apartheid with his trademark sense of humor. Download a free audiobook version: www.audible.com/ted-ed

"When people are exposed to one emotion for too long, they become desensitized to it." Many, many dramatic storytellers would benefit from this video.

It's also important to not let a joke or comedic situations stay for too long, like emotions, people will get desensitized to it the longer it goes.

Loveee the animation, and overall, the story, and the narration, and everything ❤💜🐳
Hey! "Born a Crime" was the first thought that came into my mind when I read the title. It's one of the best book I've read, comical and sad, do read it please.
Damn these animations are 🔥. Great job TedEd

The animations are an art of work
Another good example of using humor to set up difficult subjects is “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” For instance, the author wanted to demonstrate the randomness and mystique of our universe, so he introduces a civilization that builds a computer in an attempt to find “The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything.” On the day when the computer is finally prepared to reveal the answer, they host an enormous party celebrating their newfound omniscience. And then they all gather around to hear the computer reveal the answer. Which is... (say it with me)... 42. Everyone pauses as if the computer has mustered the capacity to tell some sort of cruel joke. When they ask what the computer what it means, it tells them, “All this time, you were looking for the answer. Did you really understand the question?”
Thxs this helped with my book I'm attempting to write
Yeowww another Ted-ed vidd!!

Dude it is heaven like animation But I also liked the way of expressing the way good life hands off to Ted Ed ... Am I right everyone...
I love watching TED-ED!
Subverting expectations and comic relief are tools of writing but tools are only effective when used correctly. A lot of modern movies disappoint their audience by "subverting expectations" and a lot of times jokes are inserted in inappropriate situations.

the illustration is great !!!

Finally, a video for me.
Glad you posted this because SNL needs some lessons
Great video 👍
Just add "lol" at the end
If you’re writing a story with a “class clown” as the main character, could you reverse the rolls by making the sidekick more serious? I’m thinking that doings so might both cause the main character to have some serious dialogue and make them joke about the conflict, revealing their emotions.
Almost every Wes Anderson movies are sad and funny. Especially The life aquatic with Steve Zissou... It's classified as a comedy, but also one of the most depressing movie I've ever watched. And this is the main reason I like his films because I think we need to see our life as a comedy, even in the most difficult times.
EXACTLY what I need to cope with my stress! :D
I finally understand why it is weirdly funny when mentioning someone dying as a joke
I wanted this so that I can tell others about my Life And they don't get bored
Humor is like the jazz of writing.
Just like reading, I had to go back several times to gain the meaning of the dialogue in this video. The imagery was distracting and the dialogue at times complex. That being said, I do appreciate the message and will indeed ensure any future storytelling I do plays on several emotions.

Whats the music you use for this episode?
Wow this is like the best ad for "Born A Crime" I can think of. From now on, don't say TED-Ed, say TED-Ad!
TED-Ed can you do A History On Trial Of Pancho Villa.
There was this spiderman cartoon I used to watch as a kid called "The ultimate spiderman" in which the main character (spidey) used to be funny without the need of sidekicks as in between of tense fight scenes he the time used to stop and he used to break the fourth wall by saying some punch lines. (Yes I know that it was just a cartoon for kids and was made to be funny but still this might be used as another way of expressing comic relief and I don't really know if it's true or not.)
Hey, TED-Ed can you tell the way water flows and why we always leave a sliver of water after drinking left in our glasses
Time to unlock my true comic potential while telling my life story at the same time.
Honestly. In most stories the Comic relief character usually undergoes the most development.
finally a tutorial for me
The little girl's voice was sooooo cute! Btw amazing animation Ted ed!
Definitely going to screenshot that thumbnail, it's gonna be pretty useful in the discord
Could this be used in a college essay for a serious topic or should I avoid this?
Ted-Ed's narrator is one of the few people that actually pronounces 'respite' the correct way, bravo.
I know the first story referenced in the opening is Slaughterhouse 5, and the third is Gilgamesh, but I can't figure out what the second one is!
