How to Write And Draw Battle Scenes In Your Manga/Comic/Novel (Creating Accurate Fight Scenes)

Hi everyone! In today's video, I talk about how to create strategic battle scenes in your manga, comic or novel. One major aspect to a lot of shounen manga, and manga in other genres are strategic battle scenes. Strategic battles are more than simple fights. A well written battle scene will not only show a character's unique skills, but also how they plan and strategize each of those moves. This is one of my most requested topics on my channel, so I decided to make this video especially long, in order to cover the writing process of a fight, the strategy behind it, and the drawing process. I hope that this video helps you with your manga creations!!

1:04 TYPES OF WEAPONS
First of all, I talk about the various kinds of weapons and fighting styles used to manga battle scenes. The weapons I talk about include hand to hand combat, gun fighting, sword fighting, axes, mallets, magic and ranged.
This tutorial will be divided into three parts: the writing process, the strategy, and the drawing.
3:07 PART 1 - THE WRITING PROCESS
3:14 1- FOCUS ON RESULTS OVER ACTIONS
In this tip, I talk about the reason why a lot of battle scenes get tedious. It's because in a lot of cases, the actions are shown more than the results.
4:46 2- FOCUS ON THOUGHTS OVER ACTIONS
The reason a lot of anime battles are so cool is because much of the battle is actually taking place in the character's mind. You need to get into the character's head, in order to make a battle more entertaining.
5:55 3- SET THE STAKES HIGH
This is where you need to answer the question of why these characters are fighting. To set the stakes, you need to give them a strong reason why they need to succeed in this battle. When your readers see how important this is, it will make the battle also more important.
6:48 4- KEEP IT FAST PACED
In battle scenes, a lot is actually left to the imagination. You might not see the punch, but you might see how the character's face is now bleeding. Try to keep it as fast paced as possible, rather than showing every little moment.
7:56 5- ENSURE THE BATTLE ADDS TO THE STORY
Make sure that when adding a battle to your manga, it always moves the story forward. Never have a pointless battle/fight scene!
8:43 6- ADD DIALOGUE MOMENTS
This is quite self explanatory, but instead of having the characters fighting and just staying silent, try and add breaks in the fight where there is dialogue added.
9:45 7- USE THE BATTLE TO SHOW CHARACTER
A fight scene can actually be used to show a lot about character and personality. Whether they are kind, bloodthirsty, playful or egotistical, they will each have their own fighting style.
10:56 8- SHOW CHARACTER GROWTH
You shouldn't just have a character be instantly strong the moment they pick up a sword. A character should train over the course of the story, and you should show that growth from beginner to expert.
12:40 9- GIVE CHARACTERS UNIQUE FIGHTING STYLES
No character's techniques should be exactly the same. I recommend you try and find a way to give your character a technique that stands out.
13:56 10- RESEARCH FROM REAL FIGHTS
Actually write notes. Write about how they stand, or their positioning. Think about where they aim, or various techniques.
14:59 EXAMPLES OF FIGHTS
Here is an example of two fight scenes, one with a lot of unnecessary description, and one that allows the readers to imagine more.

18:55 1- THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS TO FIGHT
Remember that physical skills and strength are not the only weapons. The mind can also be a good weapon.

20:51 1 - USE A VARIETY OF ANGLES
22:44 2 - DRAW THE LINES OF MOTION

24:16 5 - BREAK DOWN THE BATTLE
25:40 6 - SHOW THE IMPACT
26:28 7 - FIND THE CENTER OF GRAVITY
27:00 8 - STUDY FROM REAL FIGHTS

10:16 loved that you first showed Goku vs Jiren when talking about using a battle to show character. Coz that's what Goku is all about haha
Thank you! I really appreciate the help! About the dialogue moments, there definitely should be those moments in the very battle at some point, but a cool example I saw was in Bakuman where one of the characters made a chapter where there was zero dialogue and everything was show, not tell. And honestly, I don’t want to give bad advice by saying this, but a cool idea for a battle series would be to include at least one chapter in your series where everything is revealed without text or dialogue.

I actually love that idea a lot. Or at least, limiting the dialogue in that particular battle scene. I think a lot of people rely on dialogue too much to tell a story, when much of the telling is actually in what the characters do. 😊 Silence can speak more than any words

Can you tell me what you learned when she give 2 description of fight bcz i found 2nd description more difficult in a fight where more than 1 character are fighting in my fight scene 3 character fight to 1 villain. So 2nd description is not suitable when many character fighting at once. But its good to use to show emotion and in 1v1 fight. What you think and can you tell me you fight scene after this

currently im creating a battle seinen, has the power system of a shonen (i named it Uni) and my character is an uni user, which got the traitor's uni, which is a conjurable sickle, it has a way bigger mechanic system but im not explaining it here, but i already got his battle style and way of thinking on spot and i just need to write and draw it all up (which im not doing since it's my first manga and its surely flopping, so ill maybe post a few others to gain a certain popularity and experience before it)

I got a question what if I wrote my character as a skilled fighter when we first started and won a few fights before fighting his older brother and lost big time. Is that ok. Around 11:25 you mention that but I’m wondering how I did mine is ok or I should fix it

Shonen characters a constantly talking while fights. Even swings. A lot of battle anime characters say the name of their attack while they attack
Her eyes... they bore into my soul
Though my character uses a sword, she isn't human, and it has been a bit of a challenge figuring out how she would move in a fight

You would have to choreograph the fights in this case but her other points should apply still
15:40 I don't really think that using a first-person narration when there are four characters in a fight would work well. One on one, sure, but not with four
Oh no in my comic I made the main character a bit overpowered but in the next battle, that character doesn't know how to control their power and abit weak. Is that alright?

In context, this character picked up a sword and then they swung it in one go and all enemies were gone, and then the character got tired and fainted
