    Yes definitely. Less is more. Just put the most important stuff in your resume. The interview is where you can add the extras. Principals die a little inside when they see a huge resume lol.

    Thanks for this! 1. What are your thoughts on including a Teaching Philosophy, perhaps in place of the outdated objective? 2. Do you recommend bringing a super condensed portfolio (such as one page, front & back) to an interview?

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

    @KathleenJasperEdD

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great questions. 1. Your teaching philosophy should be something demonstrated in your teaching. It doesn’t do much on a resume. I would take the opportunity to show the principal your philosophy rather than putting it on the resume. Principals are busy, they want results, they want teachers who can increase student achievement. 2. Like the philosophy, a portfolio is sort of extra fluff. Principals know that your portfolio is all the good/perfect scenarios you’ve collected. It really doesn’t show them what you can do. I would instead be ready with a scenarios you can share when they ask you questions about your reading and math block. They are more interested in how you handle classroom management, differentiating for struggling students, etc. I know teachers want to show a portfolio because your proud of what you’ve done. But it’s best to show it in the classroom.

    For Ohio, some schools will like the high school diploma because it shows what type of area you grew up in. A lot of high schools will hire alumni of their school or alumni of surrounding schools. It happens quite often.

    Yes include those because it will show the principal you are capable of helping with extracurriculars. That’s an important thing. And yes, they can have their own section, or you can include them in your work experience.

    I started working on your template and had a few questions - 1. I have worked as a manager at three locations before becoming a teacher, but they have closed down. I had a lot of experience, but a reference cannot be found. Should I leave those off of the resume? 2. If I had more jobs, is adding a second page alright, or should I just put the last 10 years of employment? 3. I was a first-year teacher in 2019-2020 and was not rehired. It was devastating. How would you respond on the application, on the resume, and in the interview? I have applied to 15 districts. I have many outstanding references, except from the one principal. I have learned, trained, and developed since working at that campus. Thank you for this template.

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

    @KathleenJasperEdD

    1. Include those. It's not your fault the shut down and if it applies, you should include it. 2. No second page. Last 10 years is plenty. Unless something is applicable. 3. Try to focus on references that are positive. Just say the school wasn't a good fit, but you learned a lot and are grateful for the opportunity. Keep it positive.

    I would like to ask if I can include in my resume the practice teaching in my senior year in college? I mean, I thought that maybe I can write it up because I planned and designed instructions during that time. Even crafting summative or periodical tests that will assess the learning of the pupils, bearing in mind the objectives. I also experienced facilitating learners of different grade levels, as well as maintaining classroom management. Yet, I just want to make sure if it is okay or not to include that, since it happened during college not after I obtained diploma. Thank you very much! :)

    Hi Kathleen, I only have my statement of eligibility which says I'm eligible. I've also passed my subject area exam. Would I then only write "Statement of Eligibility" under the Certification part of the resume? Or would "pending certification" be better?

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

    That means that the verbs in the bullets are all the same tense. For example: - Coordinate staff meetings - Organize school events - Collaborate with colleagues Notice the verbs--coordinate, organize, and collaborate--are all in present tense. You do NOT want them look like this: - Coordinated staff meetings - Organize school events - Collaborating with colleagues See how the verbs are NOT parallel tenses in the above case? Hope that helps. Have a great day and thank you for watching.
