    1. You have to bullshit the narcissist in the most boring way possible. It reduces their perception that you are a threat to their insecurity. If you are too attentive, eager, or enthusiastic they will attack, sabotage, or use you even more for their weird manipulation games. 2. Don't take it personally. Your mental, physical, and career health are your #1 priorities. Their narcissistic insecurity is THEIR problem, and they are desperate to pin it on anyone that will take their bait. Just play dumb and save your emotions and energy for living a positive life, regardless of their BS. 3. Get out. Just accept that someone promoted an incompetent narcissist into leadership at this company, which means there is likely an incompetent narcissist above them, and likely more narcissists or PollyAnna enablers surrounding them. You will never thrive through your competence at a company like this. The only people thriving in companies like this love being immersed in the narcissistic bullshit, and they love abusing competent contributors. 4. Sever all ties with the narcissist and the company. Become invisible to them. Don't let them reach out to you for anything. It's all a toxic ploy, regardless of how ingratiating they behave. Warn your friends, etc. If they are attracted to you for any reason, then they will CRAVE whatever they get from you.

He tells others to ask me for help but tells me not to help cause I can’t properly manage my time. He took credit for an award an employee got because I nominated them and did the write up/application; he just signed it. When he is indecisive, he then values my opinion, so that he can tell others that it was my idea and he doesn’t look like the bad guy. This guy clearly doesn't know what a narcissist is. Let alone how to deal with a narcissistic boss. Tell you what, even if you try stroking, complimenting, thanking a narcissistic boss in order to gain their favor, they will never appreciate it. They will never be satisfied with your work even if you do overtime. They will always find fault in something you do. They will highlight your mistakes and ignore your successes. They will go so far as even feel jealous of you succeeding, and try to undermine you. So no. The only way you will feel sane is to find another job. "Grey Rock" method and kissing ass should be temporary, until you find a new job. Don't stay near a narcissistic toxic boss, they will screw you up in ways you can't even imagine. They'll condition you, like Stockholm Syndrome, especially if you have some kind of trauma already in your life.

Well said, and I've been dealing with this toxic work environment for 14 years. Recently I lost it and went off on my boss and several coworkers that went behind my back, to stir up trouble between me and my boss. My boss loves to humiliate me in front of all of them. Needless to say, it's a mess... and I'm partly responsible for causing it. I need to keep my mouth shut and not speak to anyone. That's what I plan on doing until I can find another job. It might take awhile because I'm nearly 60 years old with a blue green undercut pixie haircut. I'm so tired of being shamed for just being myself. There is nothing in the dress code about not being able to color your hair fashion colors or waer all black. I sometimes wear short dresses, but always with tights. I don't show a lot of skin. I mostly keep to myself and don't bother anyone... except for my recent "outburst" HR recently brought up my hair. Apparently some of my coworkers have a problem with it. Maybe even my boss has a problem with it but she hasn't said anything to me directly. It's all very passive aggressive and toxic.

I was no longer the underdog. She'd say out loud are you calling me stupid when I'd bring issues to her. Prior to we'd talk about it and come to a conclusion all while laughing and learning. This attitude she adopted towards me was a plot for reason to fire me. I told her I was leaving, but she wanted to make it seem like she fired me. She'd call unnecessary meetings multiple times a day to talk about why we weren't completing a task. The meetings kept us from completing a task! When we were cool I recorded moment of her belittling people in the office and knew it was a matter of time she'd do the same to me. What I witnessed others go through brought me to tears. I knew my worth and was out of there! I still see her from time to time. I think she wants me back in office. Naw, l'm cool crazy lady!!!

I left a job due to having a narcissist supervisor. Laziest person on the planet. Needed constant praise and attention. He did nothing all day but on his phone or flirting with the female staff. His only skill was kissing up to the hire ups. His boss and the people below him did all the work. After his boss left he took her place. That job had to hire two new additional staff members to assist him because "suddenly" the job had a larger workload ...bs. The employer is now out nearly 90 grand a year when it is obvious that this staff was not neccesary if they replaced him with a competent worker. Kissing up to narcissist is the short game. It is never enough and they will circle around you more to seek praise. Grey stone method is key.

I like his realistic approach. But I believe a movement should be to eliminate such people from Leadership roles , because it’s destructive behavior and is like a disease that can threaten the well being of employees, both at mental and physical level. I don’t support tolerating such people at all. They should be fired and replaced. Not baby sat!

Alot of people are saying leave the job but let me put you guys in my situation... I'm 19. I dropped out of school in the 11th grade because of my financial issues. I live with my grandparents who are on the verge of not being able to take care of there selves. I started working for a car detail company when I was 16 and it's been 3 going on 4 years now & this is definitely not going down the road I thought I paved. When I first joined I didn't think nothing about the pay, I was just happy I didn't have to risk my freedom for a couple of bucks. Years go by , alot of people left the job , some joined and left the same day. I used to think that those guys just didn't want to work. Boy was I wrong. I'm now a supervisor/manager without applying or asking for the position.. same exact pay... But now I got a new aspect. Seeing my boss In a completely different way then when I first met him. Always asking me to do stuff beyond my job w/ no pay. Narcissistic tendencies with me only it seems like, and ontop of that I don't even get payed enough to go through this shit ! I've looked everywhere for a new job and can't qualify for a majority of applications because at the time I either wasn't old enough , or because I do not have a HS diploma.. I feel like I'm trapped in a situation that only seems to get worser. If I leave today right now, I'll definitely be back in the streets risking my life for a couple of bucks. I'm a very hard worker and I really shouldn't be in the position that I'm in as of today.

I'm really sorry to hear about what you are going through. It sounds like a tough spot. I hope you are ok. I give you credit for understanding this, I think, pretty common personality disorders narcissists and sociopaths abut 10% of the pop. I was 51 before I figured it out and I was married to one, but didn't know it at the time. Anyway for someone in your position who is a hard worker I would continue to seek other employment because this guy will continue to take advantage of you. I think you are pretty smart to have figured this out so definitely get your GED and also think about getting a degree. I think if you feel as if you have choices and are working towards them then you can manage what you have to for the time being. Hopefully you are well. I know the covid pandemic has caused a lot of employment issues but there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Having said all that these people are a scourge to humanity and will suck the life out of you the longer you are around them.

I'm sorry. That sucks. I can relate because I also feel trapped in my job. Partly because of my age... and I have my HS diploma. It doesn't do much good these days, sad to say. A college degree is what's required to make enough money for basic survival. With the economy the way that it is... it's only getting harder to make ends meet. My rent has gone up $150.00 this year! They've been raising my rent every 6 months because they can.

I will listen to them obediently when they make some logical point or clearly state rules or what hurts them. But, definitely not to do anything to satisfy their Ego. The problem is that our culture encourages narcissists in the workplace. People who are narcissists tend to be very charismatic, come off very confident which might be arrogance- I feel like people who should NOT be in these positions are simply because they act like they are powerful and get things done. But the damage they cause is terrible for everyone below them. Know the flags! Do they gaslight you Act super nice to your face one minute then act mean and belittling the next? Try to blame you or twist things around so you feel their mistake was your fault. Do they use toxic shame? Refuse to apologize Refuse to take accountability if they cause pain. Are not able to show empathy? Treat you horribly if you make them look bad with their superiors? Refuse to listen to ideas , or will take credit for your good ideas. Are extremely competitive and get angry if they feel showed up by anyone.

The best thing to do is to get out of that job/out of working in that department with that boss as soon as the opportunity approaches. It's like being in a toxic relationship, and you have to have two people who are willing to work out their own differences in order for it to work. Narcissistic people will not extend the olive branch, and will always double down on there behaviors and mistreatment towards you and others who don't always bend the knee for them.

In the long run they overplay their card and bad work force in the long run.

Often the reason this won’t work is because there’s very veiled abusive behaviour that the upper management will never witness. The narcissist is a “good guy” in their eyes. At worst, they’ll like that he gets things done and is an asset. Only the bottom rung of the ladder witnesses the damage they cause to people and the workplace. Their controlling behaviour is only felt and experienced by those who have empathy and naivety that they can mend this relationship. Realty: the narcissist has a personality disorder and needs supply of positive attention to feed their ego. They must form codependent relationships because they cannot survive alone but want to present God-like capabilities to garner praise and admiration. All smoke and mirrors though because the people “under” are doing all of the work without realizing they’re being manipulated (at first).
