How to Work on the Bob Dummy

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Code Red Defense
► www.codereddefense.com
This video illustrates how to work on the Bob Dummy. It's a basic drill to use when practicing your striking in self defense.
The first thing to do when you're looking at striking your opponent is relaxing your body. All the tension must leave in order for you to focus and be able to perform properly.
One thing to remember when you're striking is to always follow through. You cannot maintain one position and continuously strike. You need to move your body with the strikes nonstop, it's more effective.
The purpose of this drill is to develop your ability to strike for long periods of time, to train that over-kill. Fights usually do not last more than a few seconds, so this drill can help you perfect nonstop striking so that you can have an advantage if ever you find yourself an ongoing fight.
Learning the fundamentals of striking are essential for a complete self defense training. Indeed, knowing how to deliver the following strikes is crucial for your personal protection: palm strikes, elbows, knees, head butts, neck cranks, hammer fists, etc.
Remember, that you should keep it as simple as possible. You need to keep your body synchronized with your striking, and move around. Do not just stay in one place. That is not recommended. Your purpose with this drill is also to develop that sense of overkill, to be able to finish off an opponent if ever you are in a fight.

Wow there are a lot of negative comments about this video. Let's not forget this is just a solo training drill. It may look hilarious but this is actually a good drill for a spontaneous pre-emptive strike to prevent an aggressor from striking you first. Does this mean you're going to be the baddest street fighter or MMA superstar after doing this drill a few times?... of course not! that's not the point! This is a drill to simply supplement the rest of your training no matter what style or art you practice. Sometimes you just want to get a quick workout in and brush up on some of your self defense skills.

Thanks Nathan for your comment on this self defense video. We do have the version with the Bob Dummy's base filled with sand. We used the "half filled" version to demonstrate that when you strike, your attacker will change position and you will have to use your footwork to follow up with the rest of the strikes rather than staying in the exact same place. Take care and thanks for watching!

Eventually I plan to make one of these myself. Rather then cushioning foam I plan to use layered cloth sewn thick and in a quilted pattern until its nearly an inch thick then stuff it with dried out autumn fallen leaves until it is very very tightly packed and seal it onto a wooden stick figure frame.

One way would be to attach the dummy to a solid foundation, so you don't have to hold it up artificially. By holding it up you will ingrain this behavior for no good reason. Also, going full berserk on a downed enemy is not necessarily an ideal drill either. What is missing here is the context why you should basically attempt to kill your opponent - not goving the context is simply unaccapetable and can get you in more trouble than softer solutions, if you take going berserk as a general response to any kind of threat.

  • @aymeric9912

Really enjoyed it. Sure it's not a real fight with a live opponent, but that's a much more advanced drill - nothing wrong with this drill, as a stepping stone to build up to that. Not everyone is a natural fighter, and some folks need to take it step by step. Plus, if If you did those 10-20 second flurries as sets it would have some anaerobic conditioning value. What I see as the big advantage is that you're training gross motor skills - and when the fight or flight response kicks in, that's all you've got. You would probably adapt it quite a bit for a very small person (maybe introduce improvised weapons ?). Good drill though . Cheers !

Thanks Brian...We're glad that you like the idea. The pad is a great add on to the Bob Dummy to practice your knee strikes. Keep training for self-defense and take care.

You have the bob filled too little too light and if you think you can manipulate a 180-200lb man who can move, like you can bob, it will be too little too late. Especially if that man has a consciousness or common sense with his movements

Yes good point, we do have him filled up for certain situations and for other situations less filled, to more around. We have multiple bob Dummy's. Good point though. Cheers.

If you want to improve on your BOB, check out this DIY project I'm calling BOBLegs. It's a wing chun leg for front leg kicking and outside foot position, as well as a kicking leg on springs that allows you to work kick defense drills, intercepting, kicking around a barrier, and more. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gImppcOdn6yWYLQ.html

You have to be careful with the overkill. I've learned in the real world, most assholes who are going to fight you, don't know how to actually fight. They also can't take many punches. The point is to overwhelm the attacker, yes, just be careful you don't kill them...unless that's what you're trying to do...
