In this video, you will learn how to wire a 2-wire DC sensor, like a switch or a contact, to a PLC input card. You will also learn what a 2-Wire Discrete sensor is and recognize some of the common types of 2-Wire Discrete sensors.
DC sensors can be used to indicate the state of a device or a process to the PLC program. Knowing these input states can allow the PLC program to make decisions, such as, when to start or stop a pump.
Discrete DC Sensors, or discrete Direct Current sensors, operate in a circuit with a battery or other power source, commonly known as a power supply. A power supply is placed in an electrical circuit to provide power to the connected devices, like a switch, or a lamp. DC power supplies are referred to by their voltage and capacity, indicated by how many amperes they can supply. The more amperes a power supply can deliver, the larger and more expensive they generally are.
In DC PLC circuits, the power supply almost always supplies 24 Volts DC to the connected devices.

    Its really great to have discovered this channel today. I'm doing a bit of a binge on everything you have on PCLs and learning a lot! One question - say you wanted to wire in both sensors in this video to the supply in channel 10, is that possible? If so, how would you go about doing this? Connect 10 to a terminal block with branching wires to each sensor?

    Yes to both questions. Simply run a wire from Terminal 10 to a block with 8 or 10-terminal blocks that can be used to distribute 24VDC (terminal 10) or for common (terminal 20).

    I really appreciate your efforts to convey information in such a methodical way. Thank you very much. Quick question though, if the card terminals 2 to 9 are all supplied from 10(+24vdc), then the proximity switch terminals are both supplied with +24vdc terminals 10 and 5. 11:44

    Terminal 10 supplies +24VDC to the switch. When the switch closes, it sinks the voltage to Terminal 5, which causes the input to go "true" (value of 1). The description at 9:36 may be a little misleading, as power "supplied" to Terminals 2 - 9 occurs only when wired to a switch and the switch closes. Hopefully, this makes it a little clearer.

    in polarized sensor i have + and - terminals what i had understood from the video is connect + terminal to + 24 of plc and ther other terminal of sensor to plc input for the same sensor can i connect the - terminal of the sensor to the - of plc and + terminal of the sensor to plc input ??

    With the right type of PLC card you can. You need a card that will source 24VDC at the PLC input terminals (a sourcing input card).

    @11:43 did you mean to say channel 5 instead of 3? Because in your schematic it appears to be channel 5 but you say 3? Sorry just trying to make sure I’m not missing something here.     Hi there, Thank you for your compliments and happy to hear you found our videos useful. If you follow up the "Terminal D" wiring toward the card's "LED Indicators" you will see number 3, which is corresponding to channel 3 as it is mentioned in the video. The point is that, when you open up the card's door, you will see the "screw terminals" to which the wires are connected. The numbers beside the card at 11:43, from 1 to 20, are the numbers on the "Screw Terminals". Therefore, "Screw Terminal number 5" is corresponding to "channel number 3". For more clarification, you may want to search for this part number: 6ES7392-1AM00-0AA0 (40-pin Front connector for signal modules with screw contacts). Please let me know if you had further questions.

    Where we wire output cable, for example we have 2 wire sensor we connect the _ and + wire on the input but where is the output cable connected to run the motor or other device?

    In this video, we show the connection of an input sensor, such as a switch. If you want to open a valve or start a motor based on the state of a discrete input, you would need to provide a discrete output card and the appropriate PLC logic to drive the output to the contactor or motor starter.     Yes, provided you have a 3-wire switch which requires a separate 24VDC input. Consult the wiring diagram for your specific device to see the options for supplying power. Be careful: all signal wires connected to a PLC input card needs to be on the same 24VDC circuit.

    Excellent question! You would normally have to consult the vendor's wiring drawing or other documentation. Also, polarized devices would normally label the "+" and "-" terminals on their device terminals in order to indicate the sensor is polarized. Often, the sensor will have a sticker or label indicating that the sensor must be wired in a particular way.

    2-wire sensors simply provide a contact-closure so that a complete circuit can be made. In the case of a PLC input, the switch allows current to flow from the positive terminal to common. What is not shown is the internal circuit which is activated when the switch is closed. That circuit is used to indicate that the discrete input is "made", or in terms of the PLC program, set to a value of ON or "1".

    What about the other Inputs B-H? the terminal block get 24V from 10, bridged A+ to H+ ? Or more likely from the power module that supply the plc?

In our video, timestamped at 12:47, we provide a detailed guide on how to correctly wire this card. To power it, you should connect it to a +24 VDC source. This can be achieved by either using terminal 10, as demonstrated in the video, or by directly connecting it to the main power supply's +24VDC output. The latter option should then be looped back to the input card via one of the terminals, as shown for the "A" terminal block in the video. Once your switch is activated, and you have programmed the logic in the PLC accordingly, the input card will respond as per your programming instructions.     So terminal 10 is designed and capable to supply all input terminals 2-9? In case you have 8 switches, you need a terminal block provides 24V 8 times, A+ 24V black wire and A input white wire, for example. Thx alot for your great work and fast answer, really really appreciate it.

    2-wire 24VDC discrete signals can be run up to 1000m, but it depends on a number of factors, like wire size and environmental conditions. You should be safe up to 100m with no issues.

    I'm a little confused at 9:30 in the video. Why is the positive power internally wired to terminals 10 and 11? And why are terminals 2 through 9 negative? To be negative, don't they have to be internally connected to terminal 20?

    Terminals 2 - 9 are grounded internally (negative) through the backplane of the input card. Providing power to terminals 10 and 11 provides a means to isolate the first 8 inputs from the second 8 inputs. There is optical isolation inside the input card to provide this protection.

    Very usefull, but I still have some questions: where comes the power from that feed the sensors?...is it taken from the input module? In the example of the pushbutton, wouldnt the conection betwen terminal 10 (+) and A( -) or any other terminal of the top 8 DI's make a short circuit when the button is pressed? I really didn't get this so well. And lastly what happens if we have a module filled with field devices if they have two polarized terminals? ...the common terminal (+ or -) from all the devices gets connected to the same terminal on the PLC, or Programmers or Electrical Engeneers get common from the PLC to a terminal block with some branches to distribut it there and make it easier and functional to wire the common from all sensors apart from the Input Module common terminals?

    The 24 VDC power at the input card terminals is supplied by a separate power supply. For the inputs, the internal circuitry of the input card provides the necessary load to prevent the closing of the switch from creating a short circuit. The internal circuitry senses the switch has been closed, and writes a "1" to the input card's data table.

    Yes, the video shows the connection of one sensor to the PLC input card. If you have a "full card" with 8 or 16 sensors, you would use a set of external terminal blocks to connect the common wire.

    How come the red wire of the photoelectric switch is connected to terminal 10 instead of the terminal block? I thought terminals 10, 11 and 20 were for the negative terminals of the power supply.

    Terminals 1, 10, and 11 are +24VDC. Terminal 20 is Common. At 11:47 in the video, you can see that power is supplied via the red wire and connected to the corresponding PLC input terminal via the black wire. Whenever connecting devices to a PLC card, consult the PLC I/O card documentation to determine how the device should be wired. A PLC card can many times support many different types of devices, so consulting the documentation is usually required.

    Not too sure if I’m asking the question correctly but today I ran a circuit to a filler and I figured I was going to be pulling a blue+ and a blue/white- wire but he told me no you were supposed to pull two blue wires a common and a signal what is the difference?

    The only difference is the color of the wire sheath. One wire, regardless of color, will be the positive (+) or signal wire and the other will be connected to common. There is a lot of disagreemet as to the "proper" colors for discrete 24VDC signals. The two schemes that seem to be best aligned with UL508 (a standard) and NFPA79 (a code) are blue (+) / white with blue stripe (COM) - and - blue / blue.

    You are correct. See the comment above to your first question. Transistor type switches are normally 3-wire switches and must be wired differently. See "How to Wire Discrete DC Sensors to PLC - Part 2".

    Terminal 10 supplies +24VDC to the circuit. The "signal" or input wire is connected to terminals 2 - 9, where input 0 is connected to terminal 2 and input 7 is connected to terminal 9. Ground is provided as a common ground point for the entire card, through terminal 20.

    Many sensors do have multiple wires, including the ones described in the RealPars video "How to Wire Discrete DC Sensors to PLC - Part 2". Many proximity switches are "contact closures" which only require 2 wires. Hall effect sensors (magnetic switches) used in many pneumatic valves as position switches are 2-wire sensors. Electromechanical switches, such as rocker switches, are 2-wire sensors.
