Well done video. A couple years ago I used Alumniconn connectors in a house built in 1964 just outside of Charlotte NC , with some copper wiring, and some aluminum, electrical service was a FPE 100 amp fuse panel consisting of the main fuse block, two smaller blocks for the range and dryer, and 8 edison base fuses for the 120 volt circuits. Upgraded the panel to a 200 amp Siemens panel using a 100 amp main breaker with AFCI and dual function breakers for the locations needing GFCI protection. The new owners of the house didn't have the funds to upgrade to 200 amps at the time but wanted a 200 amp panel so they could upgrade and add in things later on if and when they decide to.

Yes I usually don't see homes with aluminum that are that are from before 66. Yes if you can get the AFCIs on the aluminum that is definitely optimal!! The problem is that the circuits may have to be rewired if they're sharing neutrals. It's usually the hallway 3 way switches that have to be redone... My material cost are the same on 150 and 200 amp services...😊 Thanks for your input!!

@@srpchannel0169 yes fortunately that house didn't have shared neutrals or multiwire branch circuits but Siemens has two pole AFCI breakers in their lineup for those situations, which is why I recommended that particular brand to the homeowner. I think it was the master bed/bath, living room and laundry area with aluminum while the rest was wired in copper which led to the conclusion 1964 was likely when aluminum wiring was in it's very infancy which just happens to be around the time the US began getting involved in the Vietnam War. Which brings up a good point about AFCIs and aluminum wiring. Making a safe and permanent repair with Alumniconn connectors assumes every connection is found and corrected, and there are no hidden splices behind walls which I would never assume doesn't exist in a home almost 60 years old where Popular Mechanics seemed to include just about every DIY project you could ever dream of. :)

Allium-conn is capable of withstanding electric water heater of 50-60 gallon?

on the last purple connector, it looks like you stuck a black and a white wire in the same connector at 11,50 in the video, but at 14,53 it shows all blacks and all whites as it should be, so whats up with that?

Just to confirm did you say it was ok to use the aluminum wire as the ground wire and not change it?

Yes, if it’s long enough it’s fine to use but most of the time it’s too short.

1:20 I get the impression that most electricians are full of crap. They dont seem to know what to do, and just do "what theyve always done", which is use a twister with some antioxidant grease. Id rather do it myself knowing Im doing it right.

My house we just bought is all aluminum wires plus a really old out date circuit breaker. Im a diyer im looking to do the same thing as the video but the boxes that house the wiring are really small.

@@conchim99 yeah I wanted to install a dimmer on my kitchen because my new LED fixture was super Bright. Ended up having to tear out the old box to install a deeper electrical box to hold all the wires. Wasn't too bad, as long as you've got a multi cutter to cut the nails on the existing box. And get a much larger old work box.
