Mike: Your videos are amazing! Excellent, clear explanations, and all the necessary details. I tried out dozens of KZread videos and was never really able to understand thermostat wiring until I came across your How to Wire a Boiler. What a great public service. Thanks! I’ve had two Radio Thermostat controls working for 10 years, and a mercury switch antique on the second floor, with no way to run a third there. The system is gas with baseboard heat, and three taco controllers. Now that Radio Thermostat is sunsetting theirs in May, I set out to replace them with 3 original mirror-face Nests, which my gas company was offering for a pittance. I knew c-wires were going to be a headache somehow. Years ago, I installed an additional transformer myself wired directly into the one in my basement office, and it worked fine with fi-fi, etc. I then had our electrician install another transformer for the one on the first floor, putting the transformer next to the furnace and doing whatever rewiring was necessary. It worked ok, but it turns out he did it seriously wrong, somehow. We connected the nest the same as the old thermostat and no luck. Measured across the wires and found that one of them showed 57v! My current electrician tried hooking up a power connector at the taco valve, and no luck at all. So I spent a lot of time on the phone with some very helpful Google people, and eventually discovered some of the things their online help doesn’t tell you, like that you can’t connect a transformer directly to the basic nest, because it has no Rc input: You have to connect the transformer through a power connector. I got one of them working that way, following a diagram that they normally only give to Pros. Anyway, I have an HVAC guy coming this week sometime to sort through the rats nest of wires, disconnect the old second transformer, and follow the directions in your video. I’d like to hook up all three at the furnace, and I have a question. At the beginning of the video, you said: “Now before I get into this I just want to let you guys know that if you're just doing one Nest Thermostat this arrangement with the power connector should work. But if you're trying to hook up multiple thermostats this probably isn't going to work: You might need an external Transformer or rib relays. I have ordered a rib relay I should be getting it tomorrow so if that's your situation I'm going to be making that video for you but for now let's get into this.” My plan would be to use a power connector (I have them already) for each taco controller. The original transformer plugged into the furnace says it’s 24V 40VA. My question[s]: Are you going to make that other video? And do you think I could run at least two of the controllers with that transformer? (I could put the third transformer and connector in my office and hook it directly into the nest there.) Sorry this is so long. Thank you so much for what you’ve done. I only wish you were in Massachusetts instead of NJ.

@@JerseyMikeHVAC Thanks for another amazing video, Mike! (Loved the introductory comment. I can't believe how finicky the nests can be about power.) It all makes perfect sense. But introducing the RIB relays looks like it would make it just complicated enough that I'd be almost certain to make some silly mistake that would end up taking me (and/or the HVAC guy I have coming to help) hours to debug. I think I'm going to take the easy way out and only add the power controller to one of my three nests (the one on the second floor where I can't feasibly run new wire). For the other two, I'm going to pull (with any luck) new 4 (or even 5, looking to the future) conductor wire and connect one wire in each to the c screw on the furnace board to create a real c wire. Thanks again!
This worked for me! Almost got confused by wires going to taco valve but this video was so helpful and straightforward! Thank you! I wonder if I can do a second thermostat with this since my nest still reads 26V

How many zone valves do you have? A typical 40va transformer can handle 3 Tacos, so if you're getting one Nest to work on that transformer you're probably very close to the limit. You can certainly try, just be sure to document all of the existing wiring before you start in the event it doesn't work and you have to go back to it.
Great Videos, looking forward to the video showing multiple taco zone valves with multiple nest learning thermostats running on a 2 wire system with an aqua stat on the boiler

I have a standard 2 wire radiator heat in my apartment. My taco zone valve does not seem to work with the nest power connector if I remove the original wires from 1 &2. The nest does not detect the W and R wires anymore. However, I’m a bit confused about where the common wire is supposed to connect as there is only 1 white wire to zone 2 so there is nowhere along the circuit to install the C wire. I’ve tried numerous wiring scenarios. Zone 1 appears to be wired to a wall plug that powers the unit and the R wire to my thermostat. Any suggestions on whether the wiring in this video should work with my system? I can’t seem to get it to function. Zone 3 does not have any wires.
JerseyMike! I stumbled upon your video and thinking of trying but have a few questions. I have 2 zones. Only want to set a power connector to one of the tacos. However both my tacos have a white wire on #1 a red wire on #2 and a white wire on #3. From your description it looks like #2 should be a white cable. Mine are not they are red. Any thoughts or idea on how I should connect the power connector?

Typically I'll do a continuity test. Shut off the boiler power. Take the 2 wires off of the thermostats R and W terminals and twist them directly together than test the other end of one of the tstat wires (disconnected) down by the zone valves to see if there's continuity.

@@JerseyMikeHVAC Thanks. I was able to identify the correct set of wires. However, the red wire does not go to the top connector on the Taco valve, the white wire does. You do need a power connector for each zone. And with Tacos, yeah, you'll likely need to add a transformer, unless you already have one rated more than 40 VAs.
I have a two zone setup with 2x taco valves like this (and 2 thermostats) seems that each valve is hooked up to a transformer way over by the electrical, and nearby is also a relay R832A) If I'm not mistaken, I think the relay is triggered by either valve and then that triggers the boiler to turn on. Would I be able to set up two C wire adapters in my case? One at each of the zone valves. Edit: scratch that, it's just a transformer hooked up to the zone valves no relay. Less complicated than I thought! Should be able to use the c wire adapter, question is do I need two and what the wiring looks like there. Pretty sure they used the reverse colors you did. I.e. that bundle of red is white on my setup.

Yes, you should have enough room to do that, so long as the Nest model you have is not a 1st or 2nd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat. Those don't work with power connectors.

With only 2 zone valves, I believe it will work without issues. Normally you will have a 40VA transformer that can handle at least 3 Taco zone valves which are pretty energy thirsty, so having two should leave you enough room for the additional 2nd Nest with a power connector.

Sometimes these thermostats will throw up these nuisance codes until they are sufficiently charged, then they go away. If the thermostat can be charged with a cord, you can try that and see if it clears. If not, then yes, that #2 terminal is often a mutual common shared with the thermostatic control circuit and the boiler T&T circuit, so it should work.

Hello, So for 2 seperate Tstats controlling 2 seperate taco vales... At the beginning of the video you sepeprated the "R" cable from the bundle going to the first Tstat and connected it to the grey R cable. Im assuming im repeating that process to the second set of power adapter and Tstat? When undoing the 3 wires (red for Tstat1, red for Tstat 2, red from Transformer) and seperating them, Doing that leaves just 1 red wire(feed from Transformer) that both power adapter white "R" cable connetcs to correct? Then from there each thermostat gets there respective "W" white cable from the adapter to there valve top terminal. Then both C white cables from both power adapters can get tied in with the budle of cables in the middle terminal of the valve? Where does the "W" gray cable from the power adapter connect to? The respective "W" cable from the tstat?

Hi Mike, this is a fantastic video. Thank you for making and sharing it. I have a slightly different wiring setup in my 5 taco valve heat-only system, and I wonder if you have any suggestions for making it work. I can see that each tstat R terminal runs directly to each #1 terminal on the taco valve. The W terminal on each tstat runs to bundle that also contains the Common terminal from the transformer. Finally, the #2 terminal on each taco valve runs to a bundle containing the Load terminal from the transformer. Watching your video, I'm struggle to understand how it is that my system works. Do I need to rewire it completely? Or does this seem to be fine, since the right circuits are connected when the tstat calls for heat? Thanks so much!
@JerseyMikeHVAC
11 ай бұрын
You don't have to rewire it. It's the same circuit just in reverse. Power is leaving the transformer going to the #2 terminal. It then goes through the zone valve coil to the #1 terminal. From there the 24v travels up to the thermostat. On a call for heat, the 24v is transferred to the W terminal. It then makes its way back to common on the transformer. If you're trying to hook up a power connector, in your case you want to disconnect the wire from the taco #2 terminal and tie that in with the R wire on the right side of the power connector. You will then take the wire from the thermostat R terminal off of the taco #1 terminal and connect it to the R wire on the left side of the power connector. You will then take the wire from the thermostat W terminal, disconnect it from the bundle and connect it to the W wire on the left side of the power connector. The W wire on the right side of the power connector will get attached to the #1 taco terminal. You'll then need to add a wire to the taco #2 terminal and connect it to both the C wire on the power connector AND the bundle that goes back to the transformer common. Take pictures of sketch out the original wiring before starting this, just in case something isn't working right so you can revert back to the original wiring. It would also be good to have on hand should you ever decide to get rid of the nest down the road.

Awesome @@JerseyMikeHVAC . Thank you so much for taking the time to read my question and develop and share a solution. I have just one clarifying question: for that wire I'm going to add to the taco #2 terminal, can I connect it to the bundle that goes back to the transformer common, *and* connect the C wire on the power connector to that same bundle? Or were you envisioning something other connection? I've tried to illustrate what I wrote with this Google Drawing: docs.google.com/drawings/d/1bIdSUlsu39ngvK74uQpkwKVEwpZwCpOnsBD59QYlElk/edit?usp=sharing and what I think you told me to do with this drawing: docs.google.com/drawings/d/1ZdrlaWEbUcsT_uR89ptDbmobic8KEl30_ism51-UjNA/edit?usp=sharing. @@glendfriedman You can connect the #2 taco wire to the common on the power connector, but only connect it to the bundle if all of the taco wires on that bundle are going back to common on the transformer. Currently, your #2 terminals on the tacos are not commons. They are 24v power. If you're only doing one zone valve, just go to the power connector common and not the bundle. You might have to run another wire from the common on the power connector to the transformer common, but it might possibly work without.

These power adapters only work with Nest thermostats, and not even all nest thermostats. Ecobee does have a different version of something like this called a "power extender kit", but its pretty different than the Google power connector. Requires some new wires from the unit to the power kit, and then adjusting the existing wires from the power kit to the thermostat. You can check it out here: blackhawksupply.com/products/eb-pek-01?campaignid=386657145&adgroupid=1243548951059441&creative=&matchtype=e&network=o&device=c&keyword=&msclkid=14dd1eb0d9bd1d6c957f7bdf59dbb933&Bhawk%20-%20Shopping&Ecobee Most contractors would rather solve the problem permanently by running new wire or using relays, rather than attempt to use these types of gadgets that are known not to always work in all situations.

It's a bit different. Wires from tstat go to 404 rather than the zone valve, so the connector would have to be wired in there at the relay. The 404 should also have a common connection where the tstat wires come in. So you'd use that instead of the common off the zone valve.
