Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have an outlet that you would like to be controlled by a light switch and still be able to use part of the outlet receptacle when the switch is off then you'll need to know how to properly wire that outlet.
This video will show you exactly how to wire a "half hot" outlet so that half of the outlet will always be "hot" and the other half will be controlled by the light switch.
Be sure you have the power turned off and follow your local code laws and proper safety procedures. You may also need to consult an electrician.

My question would be how to separate an already wired outlet that has both top and bottom operating off a light switch? The outlet is under my sink serving originally as power to plug in to garbage disposal. However I just bought a touch less faucet that needs power. Can I still use that existing outlet as one always hot (faucet) and one controlled by switch? (garbage disposal) I only see 12-2 coming in to outlet now. It may be 14-2. At the existing switch I see two black wires connected to it. What would I have to do to make one half of outlet hot all the time? My existing wiring is as the following: As for switch it looks like power was coming in and wire to outlet going out. The two whites were pigtailed at switch roughin ( one from power and one from outlet). Then black from power and pigtailed black (from outlet) was connected to switch. Thanks for explaining your videos well but I am not sure my situation is like your video since I have two black wires on the switch. Can I make this work now that I need a constant hot half outlet? Thank you and I think something has to be retired at the switch but not sure.

You’ll need to replace the outlet and probably add a second set of wires to power the faucet. Then you’ll have to separate the outlet so that half is hot and half is controlled by the switch. I’d also recommend calling a local electrician to explain the situation and see if they’ll give you some advice. They know the local code and would hopefully share some information.

Can you do this to a GFCI outlet?

Hello, the light switch in my garage controls all the receptacles, including the GFCI ones. So, when I switch off the light, there's no power to any of the receptacles, and all the appliances connected to them, such as the garage fridge, lose power. Is this similar to what was explained in the video you mentioned? I have three duplex receptacles in my garage. What steps should I take to address this issue?

Wow, that is really unfortunate. I’d suggest removing the switch and putting a wire nut on the wires so that the power constantly flows to all of your receptacles.

Hey this is my exact setup in my bedroom of my split level 1987 built house. I'm trying to convert the switched-outlet into constant power and the wiring is identical to your example. I replaced the old receptacle with a brand new identical one, but it's still switched. The light switch that turns on the ceiling fan/light, still controls the power to this outlet. There is NO red wires by the way. Any solutions? The light switch box does have some capped off white wires...

It seems like the only power supply to that outlet is coming from the switch. Perhaps you can bypass the switch by pig-tailing the two wires together. The switch is acting as your interrupter. If you bypass the switch, there would be constant power. No interruption. Of course, you may want to check with a local electrician as well.

    1) The live wire bringing the power to the switch. 2) The wire going from the switch to the outlet.
