How to Winterize an Outboard Boat -- It's Easy!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I show how to winterize a boat. The simple steps are, warm up the boat, switch over to antifreeze feed, and suck the antifreeze into the engine. That's it! I hope this saves you some time and headache. This should really be a fifteen minute job if you have the tools and antifreeze ready to go. The specific boat in this video is a fuel injected 5.7L Volvo.

    Simple easy method for cold storage inside. Nice vid. Fuel stabilizer might be a good idea too.

    You could. This boat is fuel injected though so she should be mint. No need for stabilizer if you take the boat out and run her through!!!!

    I had an idea of using a 1/4HP sump pump inside the bucket attached to the garden hose. That way you can put a catch basin underneath the muffs to catch the excess. Has anyone tried this and how did it work?

    I'm sure that would work. I have heard people using a sump pump and a kiddie pool too. Similar idea. For me, the RV antifreeze is so cheap and spill friendly that it hasn't been worth developing a cleaner apparatus.

    once flushed with anti freeze, do you drain it out or leave the anti freeze in the engine for winter storage?

    I have left the antifreeze in many times. No problem. Otherwise drain. You can do it either way, whichever you prefer. 👍

    The thinking here is, fluid that isn't inside the engine simply can't freeze, so I see why people drain them. On the other hand, the open air inside the manifolds some say will lead to more rapid rusting of the manifolds on the inside. I will probably drain this year just because my risers are a little old and I don't want water getting anywhere it shouldn't but in my whole life this will be the first time to drain the manifolds. I have always left them full in the past.

    I realize each motor is different, but can you give me a guesstimate on how many gallons a 305 Merc would take?

  • @605BOLT

    I usually buy 6 gallons per engine. It's usually plenty. At 3 bucks or whatever a gallon it doesn't hurt to have extra. Can always use it next year if you don't need it.

    You run the engine until the coolant poops out the back. At the point you know coolant has circulated through the engine. You could leave it run to run out the coolant that is in the engine but that's kind of hard on the impeller. I just key it off when I start to see nice pink coolant. If you want to, you can drain out the antifreeze but it's not necessary. Just key it off and wait until spring to fire it up. You need to make sure the engine is nice and warm though. Otherwise the antifreeze won't go through the entire engine.

    So no need to drain the blocks out, just suck up the antifreeze until it comes out the bottom? And then the do the lower gear oil im assuming? Then done?

  • @605BOLT

    @605BOLT

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes correct. But be sure to allow your boat to reach actual operating temp on the hose. If not, the thermostat will not open and water will be trapped in the block. Provided you do that, no draining is required as you described. Hope this helps!

    Are you ever concerned about the thermostat not opening. How can you be positive it opened?? This is my first time and im nervous.

  • @605BOLT

    @605BOLT

    9 ай бұрын

    I am positive it opened because the temp stopped rising. Aka it was at operating temperature. If it doesn't open, the engine would overheat.

  • @605BOLT

    @605BOLT

    I've been doing it for years and I still get nervous like you say. Just one of those deals you try and focus on the process. If the thermostat was still closed the engine would not cool off at all and it would keep getting hotter until it overheated.
