Hello Crystal - my favourite is old school style in a ball like your second example. I’m so happy you’re enjoying the bowl - yay!

If I have hanks I take them to the LYS to have them caked. But I have wrapped it over the back of two chairs and balled it old school, I drop the ball an awful lot though 🙈.

I guess I am an old school ball roller. I have even balled skeins, as I get annoyed with the yarn barf and or knots. I haven't really purchased Hanks and don't have a gadget to spin into a cake. Willing to try the center pull old style.
I'm so glad you went over these methods. So many young people are getting into the craft, it's a pleasure to see someone else taking the teacher's role in all the basics. :)
I spent hours as a kid holding yarn between my hands so my mom could wind it into a ball. Now she’s 90 and I plan on having her return the favor by holding my hanks for me as I wind them into balls. Mom would drape the end of the yarn between her fingers when she’d start to wind a ball so it would be a center pull ball. The hook trick was new to me. Think I’ll stay with moms tried-and-true method. I’ve been using it myself for decades and it works well so far.

When i do center pull, i hold onto a few inches at the end when I start winding. I think a winder could be fun, but don't do enough with yarn to justify the cost

Now I know. Thanks!
Thank you for this. I never would have thought of the Center pull version. I love your videos. You’re my favorite yarn KZread channel❣️
The first time I used a hank of yarn... I successfully created the world's biggest knot. 😳🙄 And word on the street is... it's still untangled to this day. Thank you so much for this video! ❤

I did the same. I finally got it undone with my husband help and a few hours. And it was a 50 gram hank....

Been there. Done that. I had enough patience to I work the knot up to the last 1/4 of it then I got the scissors and just cut the biggest pieces I could pull out of the knot-mess-monster. Then I used the joining ends method I found on YT to attach it back together. Never want to do that again so now I carefully ball up my skein after I remove the paper wrapping.
Gosh, you’re even amazing in fast forward mode. 😜 My favorite way is to buy it already caked. Bahahaha

I love the knit picks cake winder I have. It was about $20, and helps save me so much time and hand soreness!
That's awesome! I've been crocheting about 18 years and I've never seen the center pull flat bottom ball. Love it! Personally I like my ball winder. I even wind up my skeins. ❤️ Thank you for everything you do for us Crystal! Much love!
Thanks Crystal, I remember as a kid holding the hank on my hands while my mom wound her yarn. I was bored out of my mind helping her like that and now I wish I could have some of those opportunities back. Be well and stay safe

My dad was 6'4" so his legs hung off the end of the couch when he was laying down. Mom used to wrap the hank around his feet as they hung over the arm of the couch. She is only 4'8" so it was really a perfect height for her to work.

Same! My great grandmother had me holding my hands up all the time. But she is the one who gave me my first hook and taught me all of the basics.

My great aunt used to dye yarn and I also remember holding hanks for her to ball up.
Method Nr 2 is what I’ve always used, balls are rounder. Think I learnt it even before I knew how to crochet. My mom often frogged, I helped her- up to where my little hands could hold the ball. Eventually she taught me how to crochet. Good memories!💖

Leave the old school ways for me even if my hands do start to ache
I am 64..been crocheting since I was 8 and have never seen the difference of winding...you never get too old to learn!
Your old school style combines yarn work and yoga. I don't think I could sit that way for very long
old school all the way. I was taught by my great grandma that you make your skein into a ball. I had never even seen a hank of yarn until i joined your channel . They are so beautiful.

I came to the comments for this exact answer to my question “ do you do that to a skein too?”. Thank you.
I've been crocheting for 50 plus years and never knew how to rewind yarn. I most often crochet and knit directly from skeins. Looking forward to trying out the center pull!
Love your videos 💕💕
Did I need to have you show me how to wind yarn? No. Did I enjoy watching you? Yes, as always!! ☮️
For hanks (which I usually cannot afford) I work straight off the swift. Put it on, let it spin as I work. Balling it up is just an extra step. Thank you, Crystal! Hugs
I like the old school of making it into a ball or just leaving it in a skein form. That was awesome.

If you have yarn that's in Hanks like this you cannot just pull straight from the skein because it isn't a skein

@@musicalatv I found that out the hard way! What a mess! Of course, I was young and never bought in hanks before. Live and learn. :)

@@hoosiergrandma7640 the only reason I have a couple things is because someone gave me their stash. I have not done anything with them yet. So I like that I've got the pointer of using my knees to hold it that I don't need one of those umbrella thingies.
This is awesome! Thanks Crystal!
Thank you! That was great!
Thank you for sharing this. I like old school but never knew about the center pull, can’t wait to try it 😊❤️

Do all skeins have center pulls? Sometimes i can't find one especially with certain brands. I didn't know any of this and just let my skein flop around like a fish out of water or sat next to my empty top loading washer machine with my yarn in it and the skein couldn't get lost. Then I found out about the center pull skeins it was like eureka....why would they sell skeins without a center pull? Seems mean. LOL I'll buy a hank when I can afford one. I wonder what Crystal thinks of those new stearing wheel looking ones??
Thank you for coming back on. I literally just flew home from tending my own father as he died from cancer on Sunday. I didn't sleep 3 days solid. I really needed this to snap back to reality and really wanted to learn these techniques. You're awesome Mrs Boss BOD.

So very sorry for your loss. I wish you courage in the coming days and weeks. When I lost my mom that was around the time I discovered Crystal. I found her so very soothing to watch and listen to and she really helped.
Thanks for sharing!
This was so helpful! I've always just wound mine into balls but I do prefer a center pull, so happy to know how to wind a center pull ball by hand now! Thank you Crystal!!!
I’ve only done old school, but I don’t have a winder. I do like the way you did the center pull on the crochet hook! I may have to give that a try next time! Thank you so much for giving us an education on all things fiber!! I’ve learned so much from you!! 💗
Hello from Southern California. You’re up late...... and I’m sitting here crocheting.

I’m ol school just a yarn ball. I tell my hubby that’s where my 🧶 💪 come from 😆.
I'm old school, but rather than using my knees or a child, I bought 2 paper towel stands from Dollar Tree.
