Does showdown count as live?

Yes it does when it comes to daily goals and so on. I do not think this is applicable to showdown because the matches on showdowns are based on your accrued points (or it should but it doesn’t seem to always work)
How many times do you have to purposely lose to reset the lobby?

I used to have lots of issues too. The only advice I have is probably things you have tried already. (Chancing from 4g to WiFi, rebooting phone and game, redownloading the game). Sorry about that man! Can you do showdown races at least?
