Yeah it reminded me of a similar run where I was showing my friend how to play from his completely new player perspective. I couldn't get an infinite, but I managed to Dual Wield a couple of dropkicks, which consisted on 2/3 of my deck. It wasn't as complex as this but it got him confused for a moment.

Absolutely loving this Jorbs. I'd watch all 84 videos multiple times for sure! Just hearing you talk about decisions you make is incredibly insightful to someone who doesn't particularly understand why option A is better than option B, C, D or E. What I'd personally like to know and am unsure how to figure out is: - what do enemies do? - what enemies are there? - how do you properly deal with fights (gremlin nob vs Lagavulin for instance: what's needed in a deck to win both?) In any case, absolutely amazing content!

  • @skuamato7886

I also haven't figured out lagavulin yet. Gremlin Nob is just a matter of doing dmg fast and lagavulin kinda feels the same way but I think lagavulin actually comes down a lot to sequencing properly and map out how much block cards you want to play each turn.

There's a mod for PC that lets you view all possibilities for what the AI will do under certain conditions, often with % chances. Generally you can figure out what enemies will do without that / the wiki, but it requires experience. Either die a lot trying, or save scum to retry fights that aren't going well, or watch a lot of Slay the Spire content here or Twitch. For Nob and Lagavulin, they both punish slow, low damage decks. Skills are bad against Nob, obviously, but eventually you can get away with it by checking your draw pile and estimating how much damage you have/need. Lagavulin gives you a couple turns to set up, and on the 3rd and 6th turns (etc) turns after that debuffs your str & dex, which can slowly ruin even a deck that blocks very well. So moral of the story is pick cards before those fights to do damage quickly. Taking a little damage is okay. Taking a lot can be bad, even if you survive since it could force a rest when perhaps you really need to upgrade and continue fighting elites.

  • @MagikarpPower

    @MagikarpPower

a good damage potion (fire, attack, etc) makes the nob fight a lot easier. I generally see jorbs and baalor take a potion if they don't have the dps for an early elite. big damage cards for laga as well as powers as the above said. dark orbs, terror, carve reality are notable. also for laga headbutt, hologram, rebound are really nice to have to keep ur stronger cards in play. any draw cards are good as well for the same reason. staying one step ahead that fight is important. both of those fights are DPS checks (nob is frontload and laga is scaling) and are part of why adding as many good attack cards to ur deck early is so important.

Its ironic and funny how this started with nice basic tips about new players etc, and quickly ended up in a complicated infinite deck that is pure madness for new players. Damn! :D Still fun watching you as always man. Honestly, overexplained a20 runs are great, those are the ones that teach the most to players imo.

A likely reason that the achievements, like killing the transient, aren't showing is due to using mods. The game won't give you achievements even if they don't affect your game. There is an achievement enabler mod though thankfully.

Your comments on the idea of "building a strength deck" were actually super helpful for me - after I got my first couple wins I started looking for tips online and kept finding things about making certain types of decks which made sense to me in theory, but ever since trying to integrate that idea my runs have definitely gotten worse instead of better. lots of other helpful thoughts in here too!

The timing! Just last night I was looking for updated, in-depth guides for climbing ascensions. So many are from earlier in development with different cards/enemy balancing and no heart fight. I had been stuck and put the game down for quite awhile due to frustration. I got silent to A18, and all the other characters were sub A5. I’ve been watching your and Baalor’s videos for the past few months and progressed ironclad to A11 and defect to A7. Haven’t focused on watcher yet. Im still hitting a lot of walls and I’m excited to see what I can learn with this series! Thanks Jorbs!

I think the best tip you gave for a new player is understanding that you do not have to pick up more cards. Being able to refine a deck to have only cards you need has made me win my first run with ironclad with some weird strength, flame barrier, impervious, and blockade deck. Building a deck in this game is very much "What do I need" rather than "What I want". Makes it a hard transition coming from a typical card game

I never could quite figure out what I was doing wrong or what strats/playstyles I was missing. I look forward to (hopefully) learning from you during this playthrough! EDIT: I can’t change how your head works, but from this end, there’s no issue with just watching you play quietly if you want to. Once the objective has been specified, I’m content to just watch it happen.

I like that this run focused on teaching sundial but I think it definitely detracts from the 'basics'. I think that making a point to demonstrate the 2 or 3 item interactions that form the core synergies of a flexible deck would help a lot, this demonstration sort of undermined itself by avoiding the single solution demonform, and 5he single line perfected strike, but did commit to the single line sundial. Of course the single line pact+sundail does actually solve fights on multiple ways, but the beginning player will have a hard time understanding why building an "archetype" is a bad idea but building an "infinite" is a good idea, since most card games that offramp into slay the spire do have infinites as an archetype already, they may just consider perfected strike ×3 as the same deck building principle as exhaust + sundail

This was very helpful. I'm coming from Star Realms, another deck builder. In that game, card control (draw, discard, removal) was the most powerful thing you could do. After playing Slay the Spire a few times, I determined maybe that wasn't the right play. Made it to the top once on my second try, 7 tries later and still hadn't made it to the top again. Decided to take a look on youtube to see what I was missing. The two key takeaways for me was Exauhsting a card is good, and skipping a card pick can be better than taking one. Thanks!

I think that recording a video for each Ascension for each character IS overkill, but it could be an idea to records milestone levels - either where the change is significant (like Reptomancer getting two Daggers per summon) or just every 5 levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20. Asc1 may be particularly interesting, because it spawns more Elites, which has a lot of implications for difficulty, risk-reward, pathing, etc...)

I am thrilled by the concept of more videos like this. Even more so if there are focused on specific things like this one was (to an extent). While your A20 win videos are always impressive and entertaining, there are not really suited to help beginner or intermediate players to improve - while decisions are *correct*, the amount of mental shortcuts taken for most decisions makes it nigh impossible to distill why certain choices were made. This series will hopefully help newer players build a solid foundation they can work with :).

A video about different things to have in consideration about the different ascensions levels would be sweet too. Like, Ascender's Bane on your deck, not healing after bosses, dealing with two bosses on A20's third act. I think it would be cool too to have the heart fight in consideration, since you're skipping resources for it, and you need to prepare your deck to deal with the heart and the Shield and Spear. Thank you for this video and have a good day.

I feel like runic pyramid is a double-edged sword in Ironclad, especially for beginners. If your deck isn’t that optimal, and especially if you have cards that place status cards in your hand, you can end up with a hand full of garbage and drawing less than 5 cards per turn. This is much less of a problem in Silent, which has ways of getting rid of your hand.

Things like Nightmare, Corruption, Omnipotence, Catalyst etc. Every time you are entering a hard fight, i.e. every boss fight, most elite fights, and maybe some hallway fights, stop for a second and think about how you would like to ideally use that card in this particular fight. How much poison do you want for the catalyst, what card do you want to play Nightmare on etc. Only then start the fight and when you draw the card, reevaluate the situation with your initial plan in mind. Is it feasible, or do you need to adjust, because you drew it it the wrong time or the fight has gone differently than expected. I find that I, at least, often fall into a pattern of always playing the Catalyst when I draw it, always playing Omnipotence on the same card etc. But usually, that only works for 90% of the fights, and the other 10%, it really doesn't. So forcing myself to think about it deliberately with the fight in mind is helping me a lot. For example against awakened one, I might want to play my catalyst in phase 2. And against the heart I might want to Nightmare a Piercing Wail instead of a Catalyst, since it can only take limited damage each round.

Ooh, this is fun! Nice to see some more educational content on this channel. Especially like the name 'howtowin' with it showing as 'howtowin the Ironclad' in-game. Although adding an 'as' or 'with' to the end would make it work slightly better, if you care about that at all.

I'd love to see an A0 playthrough with other characters. I'm quite low right now (A3) and kind of struggling to get decks going. The advantages of Exhausting was mind-blowing to me (even before the Infinity combo was unlocked)!

Would love to see a continuation of the MiniChat series as well (been over a year). Those videos were awesome and it's a huge shame they haven't continued....I assume there is likely a good reason you haven't continued making them, but regardless I love the educational content!

The fact that you so INCREDIBLY effortlessly beat the game on a FRESH save with ironclad is just...beyond me! I'm on my 16th hour and countin (day 3) and have only gotten to awakener or whatever it was called, once. And I am torn between wanting to watch "tutorials", like this series (only watched this episode so far) or just powering through and trying to learn it myself and what not. I can definitely admit that whilst I unlock cards (not gotten all unlocks yet on any char) I often think to myself "ah, I'm gonna go a X build" just like you described, but what is so weird, is that those runs are the ones I've gotten furthest with. AND had the least resistance with. Whilst when I try to get a "balanced" deck like yours in this one, I just end up never getting the stuff I need or want :P So yeah. A huge fan of long war (both versions, and beaten them) and a HUGE fan of roguelikes and lites as well, so I almost think I should be better, but guess I'm not xD Not a huge deckbuilder person though, even though I guess you could call Hades kinda deckbuilder. But oh well. Edit: and yeah, super knowledgeable video. Ive also watched more or less all your LW videos over the years, and whilst we definitely dont play that game the same way, it has even then been so incredibly much to learn from them. A deep dive into your tactical mind one could say :P

47:20 I know he was just rushing through the choices as its A0 and doesn't really matter, but Deep Breath would have been a pretty good pickup here because it accelerates Sundial - not neccessary at all but a pretty neat interaction.

I lost my first game after a three-year break (not that I was undefeated before then) to the final boss because my deck didn't have enough defense cards. I was relying on apparitions.
