    Thank you ! so much for teaching us. I have knitted many years, without any proper techniques, just the way my mother taught me. And she learned whenever she could by watching. So our work is very rustic. I’ve knitted many V neck vests for the elderly in my village and the children too. Recently I’ve been watching KZread videos to improve my knitting, learn to improve the vests that I knit. I don’t take measurements I just eyeball the person and calculate. Ja ja ja ! ! 😆 sometimes they’re too long, sometimes they’re too short. And many times they fit just right. One of my problems is that when my husband put on a vest, it’s just right for him well. But eventually the vest seems to grow. And after a few times that he had worn it. It’s too big. I’ve tried knitting 2 lower numbers that is recommended on the yarn. What should I do?

    Hello Bilha! How very sweet of you to knit vests for the elderly in your village! I do have a video on measuring for a sweater that may be of assistance. In the video info there are time stamps on where to find the particular measurements that you will need to take. I hope this helps! ❤️ kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYKOk7mMZpbXp6Q.html

    I've been knitting for a long time and just came up with this question! Seems like I cannot find an answer anywhere. If the pattern states, "knit until it reaches 10 in." Would that usually mean 10" after the blocked gauge measurement? Nobody blocks while knitting...so if that's the case, do you also get a pre-blocked gauge and convert the length? Because if I was working with yarn that will stretch in length and knit 10", the finished length would be longer. I've never encountered this problem before, but now I am trying to write my first sweater pattern, it hit me.

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, I compare my preblocked gauge to my blocked gauge and make the conversion. I figure out how many rows per inch of the blocked fabric and then work for the correct number of rows to get the correct length post blocking. I understand your concern, I have never seen this addressed either. But it is logical.

    This is a great tutorial! Do you suggest using a wool wash? Does that help with blocking wool in any way?

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Personally, I do not use anything that will be left in the fabric. It is just my personal choice. You could try wool products on swatches and see what you think. It is my opinion that if you leave something in the fabric that it will attract dirty and/or change the character of the fabric.

    Hello! I'm planning on making a scarf with 100% acrylic yarn. Right now I have that 40 stitches=25cm and I'm happy with that. I'm wondering blocking will change my gauge by a significant amount. I don't want to accidentally ruin it if I steam block it but I also don't want it to warp in the wash. I'd really appreciate any advice

    Curious to know if you used the same number of stitches and rows for each swatch?

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    5 жыл бұрын

    Great question. I used the same number of stitches for all of the swatches - 20. I then worked each for 4" and bound off. The ribbing and Stockinete swatches have the same number of rows. The seed a and garter stitch swatches have quite a few more rows than the others, but have the same number of rows as each other.

    Thank you - very useful. I have a question: If in a pattern they write the measurements for both, "laid flat unblocked" and "laid flat blocked" swatches, do they mean DRY blocked swatch or before it dries and still wet? I don't know if it makes a big difference.

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    2 жыл бұрын

    When directions say to measure a blocked swatch, they are assuming that the swatch has dried. Yes, it can make a big difference. I usually let my swatch completely dry, then manipulate it a LOT, let it rest for a day or two and then measure the gauge.

    @@SuzanneBryan One more question: Does it work the same way when we measure the ready garment? "Laid flat blocked" means dry, "manipulataed a lot" with and then ready to measure? In my example the measurements for a cowl, flat unblocked are 22 x 19 cm, and flat blocked 27 x 20 cm

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @@SuzanneBryan Thx Suzanne!. I knitted up a small swatch and put it in water for 30 minutes and blocked it, just for practice. it's still drying, but looks so pretty. I admit it stinks to high heaven when you put your nose right to it, (Im positive Peru doesn't smell like this haha) but that must go away bc the yarn doesn't smell at all. I'm excited and nervous about knitting the sweater, I hope I can do this beautiful yarn justice. Thx, You've been a big help

    Hello, I watched the whole video, but don't understand why I have to wait for it to dry to count my stitches/rows if it stays the same. Can't I count them while the fabric is wet and pinned? I have a feeling you will say the fabric will change, so I am going to count my stitches wet and dry to test it out.

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Once the fabric is dry, measure the gauge. then manipulate the fabric, stretch it from side to side, top to bottom, squish it up, move it around. Then let it rest for a day or two and measure the gauge again. This simulates wearing it. The biggest complaint that people make, is that they think that their swatches lied to them. It is not true, the fabric will adjust after being worn or manipulated, so manipulating first will give you a better chance of getting accurate information from your swatch.

    Suzanne, will the stockinette roll after it is handled after time has passed?

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    5 жыл бұрын

    If it is non-superwash, it will stay fairly flat, but if subjected to any type of humidity it will start rolling again, but never as severe. Superwash will start to roll faster than non-superwash. Great question.
