Thanks for the method to restring, i have a double seater a good many years old that i took with me to Spain and my granddaughter found it amusing to stick her feet through the weave and broke a couple of strands, my daughters now in Cape Town for a visit with family and her in law’s and she’s found a riempie supplier in long street and bought sufficient to renew it with your very clear illustration it should be easy, so thanks again. My grandfather used to repair their dining room chairs but he and his knowledge is long gone and I’m the grandfather without the know how now.😂😂👍

Your video was excellent! There are lots on KZread but none comes close. Thank you!! I have a chair which belonged to my grandfather in South Africa and must be now well over 150 years old. It turned out brilliantly after I restored the timber part and added the riempies. Riempies are readily available in Australia where I live and the chair now resides. I ended up doing a chair for a friend as well after he saw mine. I will now tackle a cane seat as per your video. All the best and thanks again.

Brilliant I have several riempie stools my great grandfather handmade from mahogany timber. The original leather riempies were of hippo hide . The chairs are 105 years old. Watching you weave brings back fond memories of my days growing up on a farm in South Africa. Nowadays cowhide is commonly used as it is readily available, hippo are protected and their hide is not easily sourced.

Fantastic! Glad we could spark a fun memory. Thanks for the hippo info...that's interesting...and I bet the hide would be super-strong.

Very useful video, thanks. I am in England and I have just had a chair like yours come in for repair and re seating. Fortunately the client (of South African origin) already had the riempie material. I was a bit puzzled as to what to do but your video has the job easy. I did have to drill out the holes a couple of mm in order to get the leather through. All good!

Thanks! Glad the video was helpful. We working on these South African chairs...but we don't see a ton of them. Adjusting hole size is usually necessary. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Cool video. I'm currently replacing my riempies (8 chairs) with (6mm) polyester braid. A 1 kg roll covers 3 chairs - and one does not need tacks at all. Riempies apparently do not last in high humidity + high temperature environments. Mine lasted well enough on the Highveld (South African inland) and Cape coastal area, but not on the North Coast (this is my second restringing - and first own attempt - in past 10 years, chairs 35 years old). As the wood used is the main conversation topic (Hard Pear - Olinia Ventosa with African Wild Olive - Olea Europae subsp. Africana backrest strips) the aesthetics of having riempies is secondary.

Are the riempies available in different widths for chairs with smaller holes? I ended up having to pare my riempies for a recent customer.

We're not aware of different sizes, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. We cleaned up the holes with a drill in order for the material to pass through easier. A combination of enlarging holes and shaving down the riempies could be necessary in some cases.
