How To Weather a Freight Car - Atlas Multi-Max Auto Rack in HO

Фильм және анимация

A quick how-to video on how to lightly weather a freight car and add realistic graffiti! All of the techniques used in this video can be done at home with easy to find materials. The clear coat used in this video (and on all of my models) is Krylon Crystal Clear Matte (#1311).

I recommend the graffiti that’s America’s urban art. Seeing a passing train without it wouldn’t be the same

So what you recreated is known as a “piece” they are big full of color and shadows and take the most time, a “throw up” is similar but typically alil smaller and more rushed work, sometimes they won’t even fill the letters, thats known as a “holo throw up”, and “tags” the most common are the super fast basically just a signature with maybe the crew they run with next to it, would love to see more graffiti videos, its popular asf rn and you’ll probably bring in some new viewers

Been using this concept for a while now. Rustoleum and Krylon Short Cuts make a good spray paint. Molotow paint markers are excellent as well as Uni-Ball Gel Pens and Black artist pens by Faber Castell. What is the next freight car kit? A 60ft Southern Bulkhead flat car 114150-114349 with the truck skirts and its shorter cousin 116000-116199 with long extension couplers. They were built by Greenville Steel Car in 1972-73.

Josh and I go to certain train shows, and at every show we have seen what we call "cheap cars" which are normally quite old, missing parts, and lacking details. They typically only cost 1 to 3 dollars a piece, but they make excellent cars to practice and perfect our painting and graffiti making skills before we do it on our nicer and more pricey cars. And by the way, most box cars make a great canvas to work on! Good luck and have fun!

Graffiti or "rail art" is, in and of itself, neither good nor bad, in so far as model railroading is concerned. Rather, like dust, rust and grime, it's something that is just there, something that rolling stock just acquires over time. If you want to model realistically, you should include at least occasional graffiti on some of your cars, as part of the weathering. It does add individuality and distinction to a particular car. On a side note, relative to graffiti, a railroad manager once remarked to a fellow club member, while we were on a fan trip to a local short line, that the appearance of graffiti told the railroads that their dwell times were too long, and in that regard, it served a useful purpose. Barely!

i really hate the graffiti. I know some people want the "real" look but it's so ugly in real life...and modelling.
