The "a silk shirt is a silk shirt" mentality is so true! I have recently saved a search on eBay that's literally just "leather shoes". Yes, a lot of them are not workable for lolita or vintage fashions that I wear - but there are enough that are that I can be picky about what I get! Looking at your side-by-side comparison (from the order they appeared in first, at around 9min) of "this is ouji and this is not", I think the elements that differ are "put-togetherness" and "softness"? Let's see if I can make words make sense now. What I mean by "put-togetherness" is that the ouji outfit on the left considers not only colour, but the look of pieces and how to style them. You could argue that both coords balance the colours out well throughout, but the ouji one pays attention to accessories a bit more: the hat matches in both colour and style, the neck bow fits with the vintage/not-contemporary-clothes feel to the outfit vs "a tie is a classic accessory that matches all elegant menswear" that the outfit on the right goes for. Hair and makeup tie that look, there is clear thought in the ouji outfit on what hairstyle would suit the hat and the shirt neckline and the makeup is there to accentuate the outfit's colours further. On the other hand, the non-ouji outfit looks bare faced or at least the makeup isn't as prominent, and the hair is tied in a way that's practical, so it doesn't get in the face, not in a way to highlight any particular aspect of the outfit. The "softness" probably also plays into the "not contemporary clothing" feel. The non-ouji outfit looks thoroughly modern and contemporary, from the shirt's collar and tie down to the boots. Even though those same elements could be worn with ouji, maybe even altogether, as is they look like recognisable menswear (music posters of 2000s rock bands come to mind). The ouji outfit retains an element of "this feels like something from the past" because overall it is a softer take on masculinity: the rounded bow of the necktie vs sharp pointy tie, the fluffy ruffles on the high neckline vs pointy collar, a subtler choice of shoe vs a bold statement one. Although ouji fashion is indisputably masculine and can be edgy/sharp/pointy, it is still a softer interpretation of masculinity than contemporary clothing, one which also plays into the "men can have long hair and wear makeup" aspect that contemporary mens fashion is only just coming round to and still doesn't fully accept. I hope this mini-essay made sense. It is very hard to distill into clear guidelines because ouji, unlike lolita, isn't reliant on a silhouette, so what makes something ouji or not is a lot more subtle. But I think that just like we can use mainstream clothing to create an ouji look, one could use ouji-specific clothing to create mainstream looks (Boz has some damn fine tailoring that would totally pass as just very formal eveningwear, as does AatP). So given that, the differences have to lie with styling and how we put the pieces together, not with the pieces themselves, and the effect that those stylistic choices aim to achieve: one of timelessness, evoking a bygone period of fashion (whether as recent as the 1950s or as distant as the 1600s), and aiming for a masculine look that embraces its soft elements that contemporary fashion associates with femininity. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk :P

Look at shop locations if you’re thrift shopping. One of my best thrift shop spots was a Salvation Army next to a mall when I lived in Iowa, and they would get the mall’s previous seasonals. When I moved to Washington, the mall had a Macy’s off-season shop that sold whatever the Macy’s next door couldn’t sell the previous seasons.

ouji and lolita vs mainstream factors for me: color coordination-- coordinates carry colors and motifs throughout an outfit, rarely having isolated splashes of color. fit-- lolita skirts are obvious, but ouji still has some distinct silhouettes. long pants are usually either very tight or very loose, and shorts are usually either flared, gathered at the hem, or have a lot of hardware. for blouses, lolita and ouji structured blouses tend to have exaggerated proportions on the collar and cuffs and they're usually shorter. hair accessories-- ouji and lolita almost always have a matching color hair accessory, or else an interesting hairstyle, usually with a lot of volume. other accessories-- there are three broad categories for accessories that make an outfit read as ouji or lolita to me: historical influence, atypical proportions, and coordinate-relevant themes/colors. so, for ouji neckwear, a historically-inspired jabot, a very short putumayo tie with stripes, or even a regular tie with candelabras on it could read as ouji. a blue striped tie in a coord without blue probably wouldn't. idk, it's a lot of nuance and i think it's kinda futile to essentialize something that's ultimately based on mood, but these are some things that i look at when assembling outfits, and it's fun to theorize!

i think maybe it is to do with the historical basis of the fashion. for example the tie looks too modern and "normie" it looks like formal wear. where as tying it in a bow changes the normie-ness of it to me more historical looking. maybe the same with the bleach dye pants also. the fashion is based on history and you can have the same components but lose the story. does that make any sense?

I hate when people say you can't buy mainstream clothing pieces for Lolita, I understand it might be easier as a beginner to buy Lolita specific items but I've found so many stunning blouses and accessories I use in my co-ords from thrift stores over the years.

This was such a fun video to watch. It is hard to put into words what makes and outfit ouji or lolita. A lot of it is about feel and historical inspiration, which is difficult to define. I love the grey dress and would totally wear something like that as a blouse under a fuller skirt for lolita. The black dress worked really nicely too. Gotta love a versatile black dress. I was hoping for more ouji examples in this video, since I'm new to ouji and have been wearing lolita for several years, but the same principles do apply. Also, random though but thanks for calling 90s and early 2000s not vintage. I'm old enough that these aren't vintage to me either. Sock toppers are fantastic! I've made myself some wristcuffs and need to do sock toppers too. Yes, the challenge with off brand and lolita is definitely the silhouette. Ouji has its own challenge, because the characteristic shorts aren't something you typically find in mainstream stores. Dressing up one or two main ouji fashion pieces sound like a plan to me. This is exactly what I do in lolita. All of the examples were great.

maybe the difference is vibes? the lolita and ouji community seem to put a lot of emphasis on quality and effort, not that everything needs to be the most top quality or toppest pf effort. when it’s just a costume to someone..they may skip out on quality, may kinda just feel awkward or different than normal. maybe even not coordinate as well? maybe how it’s expressed? a lolita will put personality into an outfit. a costume is more superficial. idk..am a newbie and i’m being really presumptuous.

My greatest problem is: Even if I decide to order brand pieces, it will take ages to get to me, because I’m living outside of Japan. Hence, I’ll get impatient… For example: I’ve got upcoming events the next weeks and I’ve ordered the outfit in Spring this year. They haven’t arrived yet. I’m having a little issue now…
