How To Waterproof An Old Basement From The Interior (For Architects + Contractors)

Ғылым және технология

If you can't address drainage on the exterior of the basement walls, your only option is to address drainage on the interior. A waterproof coating should not be applied to the interior face of below-grade brick foundation walls, as this will impact the ability of the masonry to drain trapped water that leaks through the mortar joints. However, a sealed dimple mat can be installed over the interior face of the wall to provide a drainage space between the interior framed walls, and to equalize vapor pressure between the exterior and the interior sides of the masonry. This this video, we discuss the details and how to best address this condition. This clip is from Waterproofing Old Basement Walls (Exterior + Interior Options): • Waterproofing Old Base...

The raising moisture that goes from underneath the concrete slab to the slab wont be an issue to worry about as it gets trapped by the epoxy vapor barrier? Thank you and good work 👍

This is an excellent question! In general it's not a big issue since many liquid applied epoxy sealers have such a low vapor permeance (sometimes less than .05 perms) especially if you're draining those soils with the new interior perimeter drain system. However, if you have a more serious or severe moisture issue, sometimes it's necessary to use that taped dimple mat across the entire floor slab as well, and then install your rigid insulation, sub floor, and finish floor over that, so essentially you're creating a vapor equalized pressure chamber, and any liquid water that migrates through won't get stuck under the rigid insulation. Hope this helps!

our finished basement ( house built in 1950's) is Partially below grade and we have never needed a sump pump What about wrapping the cinderblock wall with Delta Vent SA? This was suggested in another video, but almost all of the building science videos suggest the outside Delta membrane, which would entail digging up the foundation for those of us in older homes

Nice video! I’m curious what you think about the wall/floor assembly proposed in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2ee2biaZ7DPdbQ.html The dimple membrane you suggest seems similar to their recommended air space between the rigid foam and concrete wall

I just realized that brick is kinda dumb. You got these horizontal lines that hold more water than say a siding that is oriented vertically (eg board and batten). And with the mortar line being recessed it will hold more water than say a shingle/slat type of siding. Wow it took me a couple decades and this video to come to this realization. lol We just take things as fact and roll with it (ie I grew up in a place that valued brick)... but it's been sham.
