Every year for the past 8 years, my daughter in law gives me a gift certificate for flowers for my birthday. I always purchase a giant hanging basket and sad to say they only make it to mid summer. I did not know any of this information. I just want to thank the very nice lady who this year encouraged me to purchase the fertilizer you sell and fertilize once a week. She also told me about these videos! I am so very excited to see how my hanging plant does this summer May 2024 🎉

My experience with hanging baskets with petunias is to water them until the water runs out the bottom especially if they are wave petunias as they take up a LOT of water. I fertilize once a week and dead-head regardless of the type of wave. Once or twice a season I will do a major hair-cut of the basket. This will make them come back nice and bushy. This is what has worked for me.

If that works for you and your flowers are stunning, then that is what you should do. However, for the general population, if they watered like that, 90% of them will kill their baskets. That's why we preach against watering that way. We have seen and collected enough experience over decades to know that the vast majority of people get themselves into trouble by watering until it runs through.

@@SharkeysFloralGreenhouses If you read this reply, I have four video suggestions (based on my experience in greenhouses). 😁👋 1. More varieties with sun vs shade. Example: impatiens and coleus have sun varieties and shade varieties. What other plants have this variety so customers can pick the correct variety for sun/shade tolerances. 2. Look alikes or substitutes. You could give a list of substitutes, such as 'If you can't find plant X then here is plant Y to use as a substitute. 3. An entire video dedicated to the variety of spillers and thrillers for containers. So many people use the standard Lysimachia Creeping Jenny and Dracaena Spike because they are unfamiliar with other spillers and thrillers. 4. An entire video on beautiful foliage for containers: Coleus, Caladium, Dusty Miller, Heuchera, Persian Shield.

I live in humidity hell S.C. The only plants I grow in hanging baskets are succulants and sedums. You really need to take into consideration where you live and where you're hanging them. Make it easy on yourself and plant things that mother nature takes care of and prefer dryer conditions. Daylillies, things that are harder to kill, etc.

I live in a suburb of Chicago and use tap water supplied by Chicago to water my plants and flowers. Does this type of water change the soil chemically making it alkaline or more acidic? Should I be adding anything other than plant fertilizer? Anything I should be aware of? Thank You. Love the videos.

If you can at least let the tap water sit for a few days before watering your plants that would be helpful. Much of the city water is heavily chlorinated.

Yes, unfortunately "master gardener" is a title only. The real proof is in real application and most master gardeners aren't caring for hundreds of thousands of flowers like most greenhouse growers are. I personally don't know a single professional grower in our business of horticulture that is a master gardener.

I thought it was basic common knowledge, that if you create your own flower baskets, you have to leave a inch or so , between the top of the compost and the rim of the basket, so that when you water them, it does not just run over the surface and down to the ground. YET twice this Summer I had to BUY new baskets, from a pro supplier, with compost right up to the basket rim, and no drip trays underneath either.

Often when I water containers, the water seems to flow over the surface and around the soil, to the sides of the container and the water flows out the bottom. But if you put your finger in the soil an inch or 2, it is as dry as a bone. I am talking about good potting soil with pearlite, peat, and vermiculite. What is the solution here?

  • @SharkeysFloralGreenhouses

I use a watering wand with a shower type rose. Tuck it into the foliage and turn it on gently so the soil doesn't wash out. When mine get really dry due to high heat, I actually take mine down and set the basket in a saucer or tray that will hold water. Then I water it well until the basket feels heavy and water fills the saucer. Then I let the pot sit in that saucer for half an hour to an hour to soak up what it wants then hang it back up. Very dry soil can actually become hydrophobic and repels water. So it can take time to re-wet. Watering til it comes out the bottom doesn't necessarily mean the soil absorbed the water.
