How to wash your pillow | Day 17/30 of my Spring Cleaning Spree

Day 17/30 in our Spring Cleaning Spree and we are washing our Memory Foam and Down Alternative Pillows! Pro Tip!! Please, Please, PLEASE, always check your tags on pillows (and mattresses!) for care instructions before trying any cleaning techniques. These are my processes that have worked for me, but manufacturers know exactly what materials are inside their products and know how to care for them best. I highly suggest using protective pillow covers to give them an extra defense against staining, and hopefully save you some time once you do decide to clean them. Another important tip, is to always make sure you put your pillows in the washer in a way that will keep it balanced. We’ve all been there, where all of a sudden you’re in another room and your startled by the sound of your washer sounding like it’s about to rumble off to the moon! This happens when heavy items become uneven in the washer barrel, so try your best to distribute the weight evenly. Just like the mattress, this is a great task to do right away in the morning so you’re not left without a pillow once it’s bedtime. That’s how I do it too. Except my husband has a pillow that can’t be washed and the cover doesn’t come off. So I spot treat it with vinegar, rinse the spots. Spray lightly with vinegar water solution and dry in the sun. I also use allerease pillow covers and they get washed weekly with the sheets.

Put pillows or cushions in trash bag, close top around a vacuum hose. Let it suck out the air & dust. It will get very small. Put baking soda or fabric refresher in bag first. ❤
I have tried this on several pillows in the past. The truth is, if you love your pillows that can’t be washed, DO NOT WASH them! They will be ruined! I use pillow case covers and have kept the same pillows, unwashed, but cover them for over ten years. Pillows are never the same again once you wash them. The best pillow you can own is most likely “my pillow” if you want to wash the entire pillow.

It seems my pillows are never the same again after washing them. I usually have to by myself a new pillow often 😂
I have spray my pillows with lysol, lay them in the sun , flip and do the other side, then when I wash them, I like to use the big machines at the laundromat. My top loader isnt as good.

What are dryer balls and what's their purpose? I'm South African and we don't have them here

They reduce static, can act as a fabric softener and fluff up pillows, blankets and jackets. They are just balls of wool. You could also use a few tennis balls to fluff up the pillows as they dry.😄

If you are crazy sensitive about hygiene, heres a crazy method :) put your pillow into a garbage bag, vacuum the air as much ad you can, and then put into refrigerator or to freezer if you have enough space. Then you can leave it under sun to air-ate. This will help you manage microbes bacterias etc and odor.
I thought it was a filter when it was the first part when u smiled at us...

Why use dryers at all? Drying everything from towels to sheets to pillows to whites to all clothes, really, in the sun is incredible. Everything comes back inside smelling of air and sunlight! Here in NZ we only have dryers for winter, and they only get used rarely by most people who use indoor racks. Idk if it's a cultural thing but when I visited the states my family was horrified for me putting a dress out to dry in the sun.... considering it was Arizona it dried in like 30 minutes, and the dryer cycle was over an hour, they were actually astounded like I'd done magic or something

I Live in Missouri and miss being able to dry my clothes on a line... I think HOA'S were the downfall of clotheslines... and I think we all became prudish & didnt want to see other peoples under clothes
Yikes, using a pillow protector can prevent this and if it looks like that throw it out! Should buy a new one every year anyways.

I agree. If you're letting the pillow get this nasty before washing it, you're not washing them regularly. Just buy new
