How to walk through walls using the 4th Dimension [Miegakure: a 4D game]

Ғылым және технология

An explanation of how walking through walls would actually look like if you could move in 4D, using the 4D video-game Miegakure (miegakure.com)
For more details, see this blog post: marctenbosch.com/news/2014/08/...
* We will make more videos explaining the fourth dimension using the game. Subscribe to the channel if you are interested!
* In this game the fourth dimension is not time, it is a fourth dimension of space. So if you count time the game is a 5D game. It is a correct representation of a fourth spatial dimension.
* Yeah it's actually "around" walls, not "through!"
* There are infinitely many 3D worlds stacked on top of each other, even if in the introductory Wall Level the ground texture makes it seem like there are only two. A more complex example is the shape at the beginning of the trailer, which is a true 4D shape called the 120 Cell, as explained here: marctenbosch.com/news/2014/04/...
* From the perspective of a regular 3D observer standing next to the wall the player character would suddenly disappear, and a few moments later reappear on the other side of the wall.

    Matthew Noland I get how this can exist and my original comment was not meant to find fault per say, by comprehend i don't mean understand so much as perceive. This meaning that we are going in a direction that we, as three dimensional beings spatially, cannot fully wrap our minds around. Thus we only see a small amount of the bigger picture.

    Being as time is generally labeled as the 4th dimension I'd say colloquially that makes sense. Though it's more just 'time travel', as mentioned. I walk through the wall because it is not there [in a different time].

  • @Vector3Gaming
    @Vector3Gaming7 жыл бұрын

    People are getting confused by the rubble thinking that it's time travel. The rubble is not important. It doesn't need to be there at all, it could have been flat ground. The point is that he went around the wall by travelling along a different axis, a 4th axis. When the scene changed from the wall to the rubble, he didn't time travel, rather he rotated his view around an axis that you can't perceive, but it's still there. So he's looking at a different space, one where the wall doesn't block. He then travelled along that axis, travelled along some 3D axis as well and when he rotated his view back to it's original position, he was in a different 3D space.

    Most of us don't know how 4D would look like, it's conpreensible everyone here is thinking this game is 4D, but it is not. Is more like he used time travel to reach the other of the wall when the wall was not there.

  • @TheAlexLangner

    CrackKat Okay, but let's say that the fourth dimension is indeed time. This means that the man could travel forwards and backwards through this time dimension. This simulation treats the fourth dimension as if it were made up of different worlds, so you can travel to a certain point on that fourth axis to a world that doesn't have the wall, go through the empty space, and travel back. So if we treated this fourth dimension as time, it could work in a similar way: we would have two choices, go forwards in time and go backwards in time. If we go forwards, we would stop at a time where the wall has been destroyed or something, cross the empty space, and go back. If we go backwards, we could go to a time where the wall hasn't been built yet, cross the empty space, and return.

    Alexander Langner Recently I watched a video about the 11 dimensions and finally I understand that there's different interpretations of dimensions above 3. Some theories even consider 20+ dimensions. This theory you're talking about is the same that garantee the existence of parallel universes, that being the fifty dimension. If I am correct, the seventh or eighth dimension is where you have an universe with all its possibles timelines in one point. Then there's another one that states that there's alternative universes with different laws of physics. Dude, science is amazing.

    Renan Silva Yeah, and when we get past the first three dimensions, it really stops becoming about space because there can't be any more spacial dimensions, at least in our universe. And so the farther we go into the dimensions, the less and less likely they are to be real.

    no, it is not. It's a fourth spatial dimension. It's a mathematical concept, not physical one. A, 1d object is a bunch of 0D objects stacked togheter(a line is a bunch of poins), a 2d object is infinitely many 1d objects stacked up (square is (not an empty square), is a bunch of lines togheter), a 3d object is a bunch of 2D objects togheter(a cube is a bunch of squares stacked togheter), a 4d object is a bunch of 3D objects togheter(a hypercube is a bunch of cubes togheter). The only difference between the fourth dimension and the other ones is that we can't see or imagine full objects in the fourth dimension, only it's shadows in 3D space, which are not plane shadows, like our, but shadows that have volume.

    Ignacio Romero never said they couldn't. But that is not the case here. if it were the case, then at the beginning, when we see him moving inside a 4d 120-cell, his ambient would get "older" or "younger", but the only thing that happens are spatial changes. If you can't grasp the concept of a 4d space, then I will not lose my time with you. Try to understand this again after studying some maths.

    it is. *the fourth spatial dimension is time.* only reason why we normally think of it as something special is because we can't control, or properly percieve, our movement through it. when you think about it, it's not so dissimilar to "height", which all people kind of percieve as something special as well - we are used to moving along 2 dimensions, and we don't really (at least within the context of earth's gravity) have control over our movement along the third one (height) - you step out from a cliff, you fall down, regardless of what you try to do. spatial dimension same as any other, but percieved as special by limited human mind just because we don't have the same level of control over our movement along it. that's basically what the "temporal" in "fourth dimension is 'temporal'" means. it's just "we can't consciously control our position and movement within it". otherwise, as far as I know, it's the same as the previous three, even within physics.

    Another way to think about the 4th dimension is time itself. Let's say the wall is in your way, but you can travel through time (the 4th dimension). You travel to the past, before the wall was built. Now you can cross to the other side, but the girl is no longer there. At this point, you "simply" travel back to the future, (Great scott!) and you're together. This game is about 4 spatial dimensions, though, so this means of thinking may not apply to all puzzles.

    It's totally normal, I have myself (and most of us) some difficulties to understand it. Even with 3D programs, it still look really weird. But that's because we use a 2D surface to represent a 3D object from the 4th dimension...

  • @inkajoo

    @inkajoo

    9 жыл бұрын

    It's actually really simple. I'll explain through analogy. You know time. Time is thought of sometimes as a 4th dimension. Notice how as you move through time things change, and if you could move back in time you'd be moving in the other direction in that dimension, but because it's time you can't. BUT, if we were able to traverse a 4th SPACIAL dimension (which isn't necessarily incompatible with time!) then you could see 3D things "change" in bizarre ways that have nothing to do with cause-and effect, and you could move back and forth on the 4th spacial axis freely, unlike time. It may be that our universe is stuck on an impenetrable 4-dimensional sphere and that's why we never see this happening, because we are locked into our 3D existence like a 2D drawing on a piece of paper.

    well if the 4th dimension was linked to the first 3 in a similar way that we are used to then there would be some patterns resembling this. for our universe it is hard to say this would be the case though because we don't see parts of walls crumbling into nowhere and our everyday interactions that we can mediate don't cross another dimension in easily perceivable ways. but if for example our forces are manifest through higher dimensional structures / patterns like string theory then we could see patterns across the higher dimensions. hard to conjecture on what those things are though. if we do have knowledge of it, it is not public

    I don’t understand why people think the fourth dimension is time - it’s just another space. It reminds me of in Flatland when the Square is trying to explain the 3rd dimension to his 2D son. “It’s like our normal directions, but we can move up... not like north, but... up” That’s how 4D works, we just add an extra dimension. We can move “up” from the 2D plane but not in the way we think of up Better example would be the crosssection explanation. For example, if you were to take a Tesseract (the 4D version of our cube) and drop it into our third dimension, it would appear as if the cube is changing sizes. It sounds weird but it’s like the MRI scan showed in the video - the brain is a 3D structure but we are only seeing 2D cross sections, thus it appears as if it’s changing and morphing in size.

    Well the theory is that time seems to behave just like any other dimension. You can have length, position, velocity etc. We behave differently through time compared to the other dimensions, as we have a set speed as if we were on some kind of time train. If you think of a 2d world with time as the third dimension represented on a graph it would just look like a regular 3d graph, and then think of a graph with 4 axis it might make sense.

I first watched this video a few years ago and I still rewatch it from time to time because this is so far the most precise and colorful explanation for people who are not specialists in geometry. And still I can understand people who are excited about the idea that this is time travel. This is indeed a very attractive yet deceptive idea, and for us, people, it’s hard to get rid of wrong ideas that explain something perfectly (as it seems to us). I also would like to know whether there is a connection between non-Euclidean geometry and the 4th dimension - maybe other people commenting this video have more profound knowledge than I do - it’d be great to hear your explanation.

    Nice to see someone talk about the _4th spatial_ dimension. This is very different from the time dimension, which people often like to bring up. 4D space is sometimes drawn by imagining the 4th dimension as a colour spectrum, which itself is a function of the x-, y- and z-coordinates. This gives you a bit of a feel for different "distances" in the 4th spatial dimension, since you can for example think of "red" as "very close" and "violet" as "very far away".

  • @batfan1939

    @batfan1939

    8 жыл бұрын

    +DLuX He essentially time-traveled to when the wall was so old that it had disintegrated, and then walked across the boundary left behind by the wall, then "rewound" time to his starting position. Another way to think about it is the KZread progress bar. The progress bar represents your current position in a video, but not a spatial position! Instead, it uses space to represent time. At the start of the player character's video, let's say January 1st, 1410, there is a wall blocking his path. Where normally there is nothing the player could do, in this game you can control the time period you're in, and so you can "fast forward" to, say, May 5th, 2235. At that point, the wall has turned to rubble, so you cross said rubble, and "rewind" back to January 1st, 1410. The player controls this using space, just like they do with the KZread progress bar, by first moving it "forward" (to the right in a video), then back (to the left). In the game, this is represented by turning in a "new," temporal direction. Movement keys don't move you up/down, left/right or forward/backward, but instead before/after. I hope this explanation helped.

    You could still consider the 4th dimension in this game being time. Considering the wall example, you move backwards in time to a point before the wall was created, walk to the "other side", then switch back to the present. You could also move to the future, to a point where the wall has decayed and crumbled and the vegetation has died, much like in the example, and walk across the rubble before returning to the present.

There was an example where a ring was moved 4 dimensionaly. wouldn't changing something in earlier times cause holes in logic? I.e. moving the ring forward in time would cause it to never have to be moved in the first place. All in all, its just simpler to say "4 Spacial Dimensions and 1 Time dimension"

    Matthew Davis Wow actually it would make sense if the 4th dimension in the game was time, because of the rubble that presumably is the collapse of the wall that will happen in the future. There was no reason why there would be a pile of rubble there if the 4th dimension was spacial, unless the 2nd 3D world that he stepped into just so happened to have a line of rubble where the wall would be in the original 3D world.

    Teh_ Wurst Actually, in reality, there aren't four dimensions of objects like this. This game is showing us what it would be like if there was another dimension other than length, width, and height, that all objects had. In reality our fourth dimension is time. So a fourth dimensional object is any object you see in front of you. It is a 3D cutout of a 4D object already, where the fourth dimension is every single spot it has been through time. If we could see a fourth dimension, we would be able to see where it was and where it would be, infinitely. Games like these are good representations of what four dimensions of space would look like if we had them.

At first I was looking at clips of some gameplay and I was not understanding anything, but this video again, cleared some levels of confusion. Can't wait to see in the future timeline if we get to experience more 4 dimensional nature.

Our universe is 3D (yes, I know time is the 4th dimension but it's not a spatial dimension and is different from the remaining three, and this world has 4 spatial dimensions, unlike ours), which is why our brains comprehend the world in 3D. From an evolutionary perspective, spending precious energy on visualizing something that doesn't even exist is very unfavorable :P

    @Johannes Dickenson What makes you say that? The conjecture of whether or not time is a dimension seems to be an open question. From our perspective, time is very different from our 3 dimensions of space, but it could be quite different in other circumstances. Photons, as far as we know, don't even experience time.

    @Johannes Dickenson Please refrain from insults. They contribute nothing to the discussion and only add toxicity. Now, as far as I know, special relativity proves that we live in a 4-dimensional world with three dimensions of space and one of time. It's in the equation of the invariant space-time interval (x^2 + y^2 + z^2 -(ct)^2 = constant). I don't see how the equation could be interpreted in a way that renders time as not a dimension. Perhaps you know of such an interpretation and wouldn't mind sharing it with us?

    Dban One No, as of now, we live in a 3+1 dimensions world, 3 dimensions that behave in the same way, and one that behaves different, Which would be 3 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension. You just need to add another spatial dimension, and time would be the same, a 4S+1T Or better illustrated by this video /watch?v=M9sbdrPVfOQ

  • @-_Nuke_-

    @-_Nuke_-

    8 жыл бұрын

    Dban One The general idea of time was... Things are moving, therefore we can measure how much time passed... Or we can relate a constant movement to all the other movements (that constant movement is the clock ticking) and therefore we can express that relation with "seconds". Then we found something... We found that, to be in acceleration or to be in a strong gravitational field ... is the same! To be falling with ever increasing speed (acceleration) at a zero gravitational field is the same as staying stationary (zero acceleration speed) but stationary in a strong enough gravitational field! That changed physics forever! What was the relation of acceleration in zero G with zero acceleration at some amount of G? Einstein understood (from the special relativity) that, speed and gravity change time! A close to lightspeed travel with slow time down. A big enough gravitational field will also slow time down even if there is no acceleration at all. What was the relation? Einstein was thinking for ages when he finally understood how space and time and speed and gravity all come very well together. If you picture time as a dimension and combine it with space. Spacetime! Einstein had discovered General Relativity! He became a Rock star of science! And here is where I also lose the ability to keep up with all this... I'm not really sure if spacetime that was introduced by Einstein had 4 or 3 dimensions of space. But Einstein said that to distinguish space from time has no meaning. That means that we can only have a dimension of spacetime and not a dimension of time or a dimension of space... The way I see it (but I can also be wrong) is that Einstein was talking about another dimension of space, that the only way we can "feel" it "experience" and "measure" it is by introducing time. That "time" is something that doesn't exist (space does exist) and time is the only way for us to understand the 4th dimension of space. But I can also be wrong... I cannot really speak with good certainty...

    forces arent really the same. They apply force to objects in a similar way, but not the same. acceleration applies force but mass moving in relation to other portions of mass (even itself) and gravity applies force but attracting mass towards other mass, reducing energy states as low as possible.

    I'm guessing we could use the analogy of a skyscraper with multiple elevators between floors. East is still east and west is still west in all the floors, but the scenery is unique in each floor. Hence, if there's a wall dividing east and west on the 1st floor, we take an elevator up to the 2nd floor, walk across to the other side and then take another elevator back down to the 1st floor. The difference is we don't need to use elevators, and we can somehow transport between floors causing the scenery to change as we move, but east is still east, and west is still west. Next, imagine the coffee mug on the 1st floor and wine glass on 2nd floor are a single object. Hence if you push the coffee mug on the 1st floor, the wine glass moves on the 2nd floor. Also the size of each floors does not have to be consistent.

    I don't major in physics or math but from a logical standpoint... I kind of ticks me off that people are going nuts about the "is the 4th dimension a spatial one or is it time". I mean... I'm just saying what I think, but it seems rather dumb to go around defining the "4th" dimension. It's just the 4th on the list... In the video, he seems (and also the game, I'm inclined to believe) to be talking about an extra spatial dimension. For example, in a 2D game, the third dimension is time, or to be even more suggestive, who's to say that time isn't the first dimension? and X and Y are the 2nd and 3rd (or in whatever order). The order is identifiable due to perspective and is thus subjective. It's not as if you'd have first experience the width and height before being able to conceive depth. If we create a 2D world, we get to decide which set of dimensions are used there. Furthermore, the idea behind dimesions (correct me if I'm mistaken) is that from any point you can move along (not physically obviously) any or multiple dimension without any regards to the order of the dimensions. E.g. say in a 10D world an object should be able to move along all dimesions without needing to know whether it's currently following the 5th or 8th or both dimesions. So... All in all.. Arguing about whether time is the "4th" dimension, I think we can all agree, that time is a dimension and the order number is based on perspective. What's important is that when we think of something, we understand what set of collections is used. So for physics time is considered the 4th, but for some areas of math 4th dimesion is a spatial one.

  • @MetaBuddha

    People. Stop fucking saying the fourth dimension is time. The game is incorporating a theoretical fourth spatial dimension, on top of three spatial dimensions and one time dimension, like that which we have in the real world. You need to understand that time and space are considered two fundamentally different properties of a universe (I am ignoring the fact that the two are linked in the real world in odd ways, though I'm sure that Marc will not be taking relativity into account in his game). Plus, it's philosophically wrong to even say that time is our 'fourth dimension', when it could just as easily be considered the first, with the three spatial dimensions being the second third and fourth. By the way, this video was a fantastic explanation. It's nice to get a clear visual to associate with the dimension-flipping animation.

    Now I want this game. Let me try to explain what is happening. The 4th dimension is another dimension you can move just like the 3rd dimension. It is not time. Time is the 5th dimension in this game. Once you rotate the camera you can move in the 4th direction and go around the wall. Just like in the 2d wall is not continuing in the in the 3rd dimension, the 3d wall is not continuing in the 4th dimension. The rubble is not the future or past of the wall. The rubble is attached to the wall in the 4th dimension. That means if you can somehow send a vibration through the wall it should reach the rubble. Imagine that instead of a rubble there was more wall there That means if you can hit the wall hard enough, you can also demolish the one in the other plane since they are the same wall continuing in the 4th dimension. You can watch some 4d videos or read/watch flatland to get it.
