    I agree with much of the conversation in regards to this being one of the best videos on crossing the US/Mex border (where to park, what to bring with you, the location of the entrances/exits into and from the border, what times are generally the best to go, what to expect, etc). Nowadays, I'm that type of person that likes to "know before I go"🗒 because I'm not as young and flexible with "all the time in the world to wing-it" type of adventurer anymore. For those of you that create videos🖥, this is no easy task: Lots of work goes into travel/shots/scenes/editing and just making sure the flow of the video goes right. This guy is pretty rad and is handing out gold in the form of advice. Sincere thanks and gratitude🙏 for the time you put into making this info video. All of us here are better for it and more knowledgable, because of you 🙂

    Thanks for the great comment. I'm moving to Thailand soon. Just retired. Hopefully these Baja videos will help some folks. It's a great place to visit. Not sure what videos I'll make in Bangkok. But I'll try something. Some folks are having great luck with simple videos, just showing the information. Less talk and a few captions that can be translated into many languages. I might give that a try. I'm editing a simple video showing a flight from San Diego to Vegas. No talk, just the sights. I'll see how that goes. Take it easy and hopefully you'll check out SE Asia (and wherever else I end up) soon.

    Hi Claudia. Its been hit or miss. Leaning towards not requiring a 180 day FMM. The other FMM is free. My last two trips, I just walked in on the Mexican side. Im half Mexican, so I got away with it. I think Pedwest bridge is still closed. You need to use Pedeast near the trolley. Near Jack n box ate Tijuana cabs looking to get home. You might be able to negotiate a $40 or $50 fare. That's better than $32 times 6. I'd say your 75% ok fir the free FMM. Just tell him your going for 1 night. A week will trigger the longer FMM. Many tourists everyday and things are 90% open. Some close at 10pm instead of 2am. Other places are open late. If you walk be prepared to pay the $31 for the FMM visa. If you drive in, as of today they're not taking the time to do FMM. Enjoy your trip. Check out my TJ food truck video. Telefónica. Its really worth a visit. Let me know if I can help. Oh keep the FMM. Its technically a 1 entry visa but they have been honoring it for 6 months multiple entries. Hopefully you'll be back within 6 months. The old way was a free FMM for 72 hours or less. So they didn't usually ask. Bottom line things are open more like Florida. They still want a mask but its open. And other than the FMM speech you may get. No questions why your entering. Same when you return to the US. The essential thing is more a Wash DC and Mexico City rule. Its business as usual at San Ysidro. Except for the FMM charge

  • @EagerExpat

    There is no US stop when you walk into Mexico. Like any country Mexico will want to see a passport. Some people pay a "fee" to enter Mexico without a passport. I've heard rumors $20 is the going rate. Others get lucky and slip in without a passport or fee. Some will say they never paid a fee, etc.. they might be Hispanic and blended in with the locals entering. When you return to the US without a passport, you'll get a lecture. It's also possible you'll be sent to secondary inspection. You mentioned family. The adults should both have a US drivers license. I'd bring copies of the kids birth certificates. Wouldn't hurt to bring yours too. Many people will say "you don't need a passport, etc.." That hasn't been true in a decade. A passport is the correct document. The new enhanced drivers license (I hear) is good at US and Mexico/Canada crossings. I'm not recommending heading into Mexico without a passport. But, if that's what your going to do, you might consider hiring a cab to drive you in. Near the Jack N Box at the crossing seen in the video, you'll find cabs returning to Tijuana. Back when Mexico was requiring the $31 per person tourist visa (because "essential travel" was in effect), cabs wanted $50 for the 1 mile journey. The $31 (180 day visa) fee seems to be back to free for short visits. The no passport "fee" from the Mexican customs agent will be the problem. I'd probably walk across. Maybe you'll get lucky and get away with a family discount

    Great info! Headed to TJ end of Feb. Recommendations for catching an uber on the Mexico side of PedEast? I heard the taxis don’t like seeing ubers but I don’t know if thats still true. Is there a designated spot for uber pick up?

  • @EagerExpat

    @EagerExpat

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the nice comment. I'm a new channel. Uber sucks in Tijuana. My guess is the drivers work two phones. As they are driving in the wrong direction 5 miles away, they accept your ride on another phone. 15 minutes goes by and they cancel for a better offer on the other phone. If you're going to the airport, yes it's worth it. If the taxi mafia see's you with a suitcase, they all want $20. (Uber is $4) You can walk past the taxi's and stand off to the left and try and order a car. I would order the car the second you leave customs. Sometimes a problem because your phone is still in the US until your about the taxi area. It may drop the Uber when it roams to Movistar phone, etc.. If you're just going to check out the city or party, just jump in the cab. They used to have meters (Taxi Libre White and Orange) That's gone, they all want $6 today. Yes it was $5 for 10 years. Maybe you'll get $5 but $6 is the price in 2021. They all work together. If it's past 7pm you'll be crossing the border with another 20 guys heading to party at the Hong Kong. If that's where you're heading just ask a few guys. You can split a cab and they'll show you the ropes. It's closed, but setup as a speakeasy on the 7th floor of the hotel next door. It's a trip. If you're heading to the airport, yes the Uber hassle is worth it. My best advice is to walk the short distance to the Pueblo Amigo Hotel. Go inside have a drink and play the cancel game for 20 minutes, etc.. If you're just heading into town, just take the $6 cab. You can follow the locals at PedEast across the small bridge and two blocks to the left. You can catch the old school bus to "Centro" This will put you on Revolution. Good tourist area. If you want to check out the red light area, head to the large arch and you'll be two blocks away. Just ask any gringo walking that way. They'll probably say, "follow me" When PedWest opens, there is a bridge to the Arch. Please don't use that bridge after dark. Some will say, I use that bridge all the time with no problem. I also have heard of guys getting a tire iron to the head. Over a lousy $200 bucks. Tijuana is a great city, but there are some very poor desperate people. You walking across that bridge (either way) at 10:30pm, etc.. is a real bad way to save a $6 cab ride. And yes the taxi mafia want's $6 for the short ride from PedWest too. I've walked in some crazy slums all around the world. But I won't go near that bridge and the dark stairwells, etc.. after dark. Have a great trip. Let me know if you have any questions. Consider subscribing. I'm trying to get better and get my first 1000 subscribers. I'm heading out, but I'll answer any questions later Take it easy, Joe

    Update on Uber. I've been told my problem might have been keeping my credit card as the payment option. I need to go back and check, but I believe there is a "cash" option. On my Party In TJ video, someone commented that their Uber said drivers will cancel if you have credit card set as payment. You can give it a try. Another said to go off to the right (facing the taxis) to the designated pick up area. I thought I did. The Uber won't pick you up if you stand next to the cabs. I had trouble getting a car at the border, Pueblo Amigo Hotel and near the Hong Kong downtown. I'm going to switch to cash payment and give that a try.

    Thanks for the nice comment and invite to the PI. Im sure ill be diving in the PI. Not the latest, but my first driving into TJ video, had me driving through the money exchange. The last exits have a dozen drive thru windows. Walking in at PedEast are three windows. One at the closed PedWest. I have some footage. Maybe ill try and put together a money exchange video. Not much to it. Exchange clean bills to smaller peso bills. 1000 peso notes are around $40us. Harder to spend at taco stands, etc.. Get plenty of 100 notes. Maybe 20's (a dollar) The kid working the window may try and give you all 1000 notes. You'll get a worse rate exchanging pesos back into dollars. I forget exactly. Maybe lose $4or $5 on a $150 changing pesos back. You can get pesos in Mexico. Usually a slightly worse rate. But not horrible. I'd guess you lose 4 or 5 cents a dollar exchanging in Mexico. Atm will give you pesos. But your bank will charge a fee and then Mexican bank too. My Navy Federal charges 1%. So $2 on $200 worth of pesos is a good deal. The Mexican bank charges $3 to $5. So of course this can get a little expensive. Especially if both banks charge $5. I've also seen Mexican exchange windows giving a few cents better exchange for 100s over $20's. And as you know overseas, avoid the 100s with tape or pen marks. Ill review what footage in have. Maybe ill film some more and do a proper exchanging money video. Thanks for watching. Joe

    The parking lot at Ped West is shady as well. They have signs all over the place saying "24-hour parking" but what they don't tell you unless you read the sign really carefully is that it's $9 or $18 every 10 hours. If you go even a second over 10 hours you'll be charged $36 on the weekend. Protip: don't take their shuttle into TJ. It take at most 15 minutes to cross on foot, while the shuttle can take up to an hour because the bus has to go through revision and everybody onboard has to fill out their FMM cards one by one with the single border agent working that station.

    Yes, I mentioned that in the video. This is a WALKING INTO (not driving) video. I have other videos that explain how to drive in. It's also a few years old. During the health crisis, it was essential travel only. Passports and FMM tourist cards were the order of the day. Although a passport is required anytime you cross a border anywhere in the world, Baja hasn't required it. I've also driven into Mexico since the 1970s. They keep the traffic moving south. The few times I've been pulled into customs, they might check the registration on a dirt bike, but never my passport. Today, I live in Asia. You won't get on the plane without a passport. But, driving into Mexico (so far) isn't an issue. A two hour wait to get into Mexico isn't good for their economy. But, it's possible it could happen one day. Even Canada checks passports these days. It's up to the government of Mexico how they handle people entering the country.

    @@EagerExpat Yes, I watched your entire video. I was just adding my "two cents" regarding your comment on driving in. The traffic going into Mexico (San Ysidro) is only busy like that during after hours of work (Mexicans going home to Mexico after working in the US), and the weekends. When I go to Mexico (I've only driven to/into Mexico - never walked in - my reasoning for watching your video for general knowledge), I avoid those days and hours. Otherwise, it's an easy into Mexico process while driving in. Driving back into the US is a nightmare. I use the BWT app so I can monitor the traffic going back. Very helpful. I tend to go back anytime after 12AM, but before 2:30 AM. Either way, thank you for your video. Job well done.

    Thanks for the nice comment. I put out another video on driving back into the US. To be honest, it's been a mess lately. Since "essential" travel has been in place, many lanes at customs have been closed. Some supervisor in Washington, DC decided traffic should be less. Of course traffic is the same. Only now they have 6 lanes open to cross back into the US instead of 20 lanes. Be careful if your plan is to cross at 4am, etc... This is a very busy time. My buddy drives to work from Baja to San Diego each morning. He has Sentri Pass, but see's the regular lanes around 2 hours many days. The walk in can also be very long early in the morning. Many people work in San Diego and cross each morning. I'm sure you're a veteran crossing the border, but expect many lanes to still be closed in Feb. I'm not sure if you're driving to San Diego or walking across and getting to the airport. Walking across is generally faster than driving these days. Still they closed PedWest so that's doubled traffic at the PedEast side. You can keep an eye on wait times at (bwt.cbp.gov/details/09250401/POV) Hope this link works. Hopefully that will help with your plans. Have a great trip. I'm putting up some more Baja and Mexico City videos before I move to Bangkok next year. @@fittekowner Ah got it. Yes you'll be fine. I'm not a real fan of the CBX bridge. I just put up a video flying from Cabo to Tijuana. Unless you park in the lot at CBX is expensive for two people. I'm not a pro, but I think you can download a Compass Card on your phone. You can get a day pass and catch the 992 bus (every 15 minutes) to the Blue Line. The taxi guys can get a little greedy when they see suitcases. When you cross into Mexico. Walk past the first guys and near the street you'll see the posted rates to the airport for a taxi. Plus speaking Spanish will keep you from getting the $20 price. I recently used Uber to Tijuana airport. It was 70 pesos. The problem with Uber in Tijuana is you get cancelled 2 or 3 times before a car shows up. I'm not sure how to take the bus to the Tijuana airport. Might need to head to Centro first. I'm sure it's not that tricky. Depends how heavy your bags are.

    Yes Los Algodones is called "molar city" There are plenty of affordable dentists in Tijuana. You just need to factor in the hotel costs in case you need to stay a few days. I might put out a video of affordable hotels in TJ. You could fly into San Diego and take the bus to downtown. Then the Blue line trolley to the border. There are plenty of websites that explain the dentists in TJ. I'm not expert but there are larger dental clinics (like Western Dental in the US) I think Washington Dental is one in TJ that is popular. And there are dental offices. You'll have to do your research based on your needs. Then give a call. All offices that cater to people traveling down will speak English. Once you establish you appointment, have the office send you an email you can print out. At the border since "essential travel" they have been making crossers pay for a 180 day Visa of $31. If you have a dental appointment and are staying less than 72 hours (or it might be a week) they may let you enter without paying for a 180 day FMM. If the first agent refuses, respectfully ask to speak to a supervisor. Crossing during business hours will help, they might call the dentist office. Plus, I think some dentists will pick you up in San Diego. I'd guess this is more more for large jobs. Like expensive implants, etc. Others say they will pick you up at the border once you cross. But it's not that tricky to get a cab (probably $6) to get to the hotel or dentist. The dentist will also have ideas where to stay affordably. Thanks for checking out my new channel. It could be a real problem if you applied for citizenship later. Again this is just my opinion. You need to call US immigration for the exact rules.

  • @EagerExpat

    @EagerExpat

    Yes since Mexico went to "essential traffic" they started with a 180 day FMM only. Others have reported they did not have to pay, but I'd say you have a 75% chance they will make you pay. I've waked across 3 or 4 times recently and they wanted to see if I had one. Technically the FMM is a single entry form, but they seem to be ok as long as you have one in effect. In my case "180 days" You should be able to avoid the FMM if you drive in at San Ysidro. They're just too busy to stop every car. If you have a dental appointment they may let you enter without paying, but they will probably call the dental office to make sure you have an appointment. Many people have tried the "dental excuse" to avoid the FMM. So they started calling the office. Of course, you might get lucky. But I'd prepare for paying for the FMM. If you have a larger group, you might get an Uber. They charge an extra fee to go into Mexico, but it may be worth the extra expense. Thanks for checking out my new channel and subscribing. I'll be putting out more Baja and California videos. In 2022 I'm moving to Thailand. So it'll be SE Asia videos. Thanks again. Joe

    Hey, just visited TJ the other day and want to give a quick update on some stuff. PedWest is still closed so unless you want to walk almost a mile, you're gona have to park near PedEast. The cheapest rates currently are actually at that lot up the hill behind Jack in the Box. He was charging $12 for every 8 hrs, $8 every 8 hrs on weekdays. I stayed overnight Sun-Mon at TJ so I was charged $32 total. The Gateway Parking lot quoted me $45 for overnight parking I actually have a question for you Joe. Does the H St Trolley Station allow overnight parking? Next trip I'm planning to stay for a couple nights so thinking of just parking there, especially if they allow overnight. Otherwise, not sure where else I can park for 2 days if I want to avoid having to pay $30-40/day for parking...

  • @EagerExpat

    Yes the trolley lots don't pay much attention to overnight parking. I think they have a 72 hour rule, like parking on the street. Even that is probably not enforced. You can park at H street or any of the trolley lots. I'd avoid the last stop near the border. I forget the name. You might have a better chance of getting broke into. The crooks know half the traffic is heading into TJ. The H street lot is full of commuters. H street was where I parked. It's still a chance of a broken window, but I never had a problem in 50 plus trips. It was always full. I'm in Thailand today. Thanks for the update. The lot behind Jack N Box gets pricey on the weekend. Especially on UFC Saturday nights. I've seen $25 for 8 hours. Check out some of my Bangkok videos. Good times in Thailand. Take it easy. Joe

    Since essential travel last Oct 2020 the FMM visa normally free for short visits ended. Today the 180 day FMM is all they accept walking in. At cost $31 and they allow 6 months of entering. No real way unless you get lucky of avoiding the FMM. If you visit a few times a month just got the FMM and cross without issue for 180 days. If you drive they don't check for anything. Some have reported Otay is hit or miss on FMM but this seems to be the border if the day. In sure a cash donation would avoid the paperwork but be prepared to pay each time. One time $31 fee and I've crossed another dozen times. I just planned a trip to Thailane, Vietnam, Singapore and Australia at the end of the year. They all have a visa fee. Its just part of the plane ticket. Same with Mexico. You fly to Cabo on Alaska and your pay the FMM. Nothing has changed but they stopped the free FMM. Hopefully it comes back soon
