Vocoding is so awesome to f*** around with - it's a way of making your bass "talk" without shoving a tube in your mouth like with a talkbox. Gross.

Now I can take a fretless and vocode my voice to sing as out of tune as I would sing without vocoding!

You can then autotune it to make it on tune again, then use some tremolo with random on it to make it out of tune again, full circle

To answer your hypothesis four years after you've made it: It sounds just like someone is singing with a robot filter on top of the vocals. It does indeed sound "really neat" :)

vocoder tip: just add pink noise to any kind of instrument track for much more clarity on the lyrics. Take your instrument, add pink noise to it, (filtered 4kz and above if you want) and then feed it into the vocoder. Basically think of it as a multiplication problem. In order for the frequencies to be present in the final signal, they need to exist in both of the signals entering the vocoder. If highs are lacking, there will be nothing to 'catch' the consonants of your voice and it will sound muffled. The waves need to intersect A LOT, especially if you want people to understand what you are saying.

Holy shit dude, if you make the pink noise loud enough, you can "Auto-tune" it with the bass. Not gonna lie, it sounds like an auto tuned trip to the bathroom, but it's interesting!

you say that the pitch of the voice doesn't affect the vocoder, I find that singing the exact pitches that you're playing creates a richer fundamental tone and sounds more musical... at least with ableton's vocoder ...

I find that on my MiniNova, if you try to sing in tune with the notes then you do get a nicer sound. If you hold a keyboard note then sing up and down scale you hear the changes then hit a nasty spot then back again lol

"The pitch of your singing or speaking voice has no bearing on what comes out of the vocoder" So you could have a line out of your vocals both before and after the vocoder and have a duet with yourself then right? That sounds like a neat idea to try out

What nonsense would come out if you tried slapping? Or is the style irrelevant as long as sound is being recognized? Love your videos, Adam!

Hey Adam! I've recently been listening to lots of Jacob Collier as well as Bon Iver's new album and they both use harmonizers (the latter apparently use one they invented themselves for their songs ____45_____ and Creeks). I've read that vocoders and harmonizers work fundamentally different, but didn't understand much how, and I wanted to know also if you knew of a way to harmonize (in real-time maybe with midi?) rather than vocode. Thanks!

Great video Adam, as usual. I actually tried this out last night -- wasn't as successful as you but fun nonetheless. I'm a senior in high school, and I'm about to apply to college. I want to study music, and besides Berklee, what schools would you recommend for a musician who primarily plays electric bass? I know a lot of programs require you audition on upright bass, and I'm simply not enough to audition for university on that instrument. I'm also dead-set on performance, so are there any schools that would give me some flexibility in regards to what specifically in music I'd like to study (like Berklee does)?
