I think a student should begin right away in learning the rudiments or the wrist/hand motions of vibrato. Don’t make it some mysterious and advanced technique for the gifted. It’s not that difficult to develop a basic vibrato which can be improved upon as time goes by.

@@Jleed989 A beginner should not attempt vibrato for at least a year as the basics need to settle in. I do not agree with teachers not teaching it until many years after they start as I agree with you, that it is something they should learn closer to the beginning, so that by the time they can play more intermediate and upwards music, the vibrato will have developed nicely. However, attempting it before at least a year can be damaging to the basics as they must be learned and settle in first - which only time can do, as you cant accelerate time.

Today I tried vibrato seriously, and it's a bit tiring. I can't go very fast yet as it sounds inconsistent and is hard to keep up with, but I can go slower for a little longer (except that naturally I want to go faster). I did it on scales, bits of songs I know, and on single notes with the second and third fingers as I found those easier to start. It's hard for me to vibrato on the G and D strings though, but I'll get there ;) And yes I've played for a year (can't believe it -time flies!).

Your not the only one but at minimum you need those basics or it's going to hold you back. I'm there along with you but if we waste our trip me doing stuff we are not ready for we are missing out on all the good practice we could be getting instead. I'm focused on doing my scales and and I'm going to put vibrato on hold till I'm more ready. In the mean time I'm going to look at what she suggested. I don't agree with the year thing tho cause it's all dependent on how much you practice. If you practice for 30 min everyday for a year and another does 2 or 3 hours or more every day obviously the other person will be ready quicker.

Thank you so much for your tutorials! I played the violin for 6 years from elementary to high school and "cheated" on my vibrato by performing with "finger" vibrato which my teachers never corrected. I am now 26 and have since come back to the violin and am having to completely re-train my hands' muscle memory. While it is painful and mind numbing to relearn my technique, your videos are making it much simpler than it would have been! Long story short= Practice, practice, practice the CORRECT technique and save yourself a lot of wasted time! Thank you for your enthusiasm and instruction!

I really appreciate the help. I've been playing for 6 years and I've gotten into a bad habit because I've been doing vibrato side to side rather than moving up and down and it has caused the correction process to be very difficult. Every time I attempt to do it the right way, it feels like I'm doing it wrong. And now it just sounds bad whenever I try to do vibrato. But I'll keep practicing. Thanks for this video. It's helped a lot more than any other videos I've seen.

Very good advice, nice updated video. I'll put my two bobs worth in as it may help some people... As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist moving erratically, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to have a smooth movement. But, when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :) Anyway, that's my experience.

  • @123jozef
    @123jozef5 жыл бұрын

The distance from one note to the next, whether it be a whole note or even a half-note is so insanely close that when the fleshy tip of your finger "rocks or rolls" in either direction, the pitch changes quite drastically compared to any other stringed instrument. Understanding this really helped me with vibrato. I think that people who have been playing stringed instruments for a lifetime will have a little easier time with vibrato than those who are just beginning with the violin as their first musical instrument. Also, whether or not you have developed your "ear" or if you have "perfect pitch".. this will also help with time consumption. Although a guitarist technically does not use "vibrato" (even though a lot of guitarists do NOT know the difference between 'vibrato' and 'tremelo').. I do believe that highly developed fingers and wrists, forearms, etc., are really going to give you an advanced 'edge' ~ at the same time, this particular joint of the finger is rarely isolated on the guitar, so essentially, you will be learning how to use another joint/muscle group that you have really never used before. I practice vibrato every day, all throughout the day. Sometimes I don't even pick up the violin. I just find something to place my fingers correctly and then take the eraser end of a pencil and push that joint of the tip of my finger in and out so that it really gets some 'muscle memory' built up. It may sound stupid, but when I do pick up the violin, I feel like I've already been practicing my vibrato. Unless you are one of those 'double-jointed" people that can extend your fingers and only bend the tips of them (which looks really cool) you will never really have felt the need to use these muscles. Not in typing, keyboard playing, guitar playing... basically nothing. This is why I feel that the violin is so unique. It really seem like the violin was made for total usage of the hand and every muscle in the hand and this is what makes it so difficult. Add in your bowing technique and all of it's nuances it becomes very easy to see why people become so discouraged with trying to learn the violin. It is certainly the MOST difficult stringed instrument for a human to play, but the rewards of consistency and perseverance far surpass the difficult path to its mastery. Great guitarists (IMO) are a 'dime-a-dozen' ~ OTOH, great violinists are a rare species.

I've been playing the violin for 7 years, been trying to properly vibrato for about 4-5 years. To anyone thinking it's hard, it is hard. D: My problem is that I tense my whole arm when I vibrato when it's supposed to be nice and loose. My orchestra teacher, who isn't a violinist, tries to help me but it's easier to vibrato on a cello (the instrument she plays) vs a violin/viola. ^^; My private violin teacher is now helping me work up to my vibrato skills and told me to start looking through KZread videos and online tutorials outside of practice to get a feel for what vibrato is supposed to be. So far, the way you explain is MUCH better than my orchestra teacher! Now let's see if I can get my vibrato to not be so tense.

But during that first year or so of playing without vibrato, I was touching the neck with the side of the first finger, which i will have to unlearn to to avoid shaking the instrument.when using vibrato.

She’s a great teacher 👍. I watched a lot of video on how to do a vibrato and none like her explains well. In fact after watching a lot of tutorials with various styles and techniques it overwhelmed med, ending up doing my own style (unconsciously), sort of like pressing the strings rapidly which of course made my violin shake. The worst part is that i’ve been practicing it for about a week already. One thing I’m reluctant to consider is that she said anyone below a year of experience of playing violin should not do a vibrato, its just that I think it won’t contradict any of my learning process for as long as I do it slowly but surely, nevertheless if someone explains to me that it would harm my learning process I still might consider it.

Hello, I've been trying to teach myself a wrist vibrato from your videos and they have really helped! I'm slowly but surely getting there! However, I noticed that the muscle in my upper left arm is sore, almost like I've been lifting weights, and I'm wondering if it's because I'm subconsciously tensing up. Is this normal and me just getting used to it, or do I need to make sure I'm not tensing up? Thank you!

I have literally just gotten a violin, I play several instruments, none of which would I consider myself "pro" but perhaps intermediate on all. I ha e been watching your Videos for almost a week now. I especially love your sincerity and Honesty, and what I should expect of myself. I know violin will be by far my biggest challenge yet. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful talent, and taking my journey one slow step at a time. The biggest thing I ha e learned so far, is that this is NOT a guitar on ANY level. Haha. Wow what an instrument. The whole tuning peg verses tuning key was a huge eye opener of the challenge I just took on. The violin I chose to start with is an Aklot student violin. I did a review, which technically means nothing because I don't know what a good violin is. Would you consider reviewing this brand?

Hi, Alison! I have a question. I have played guitar for many years and I'm just starting to learn to play the violin. Would you say that having prior experience on another (however different) stringed instrument would give me an advantage as far as speeding up the learning curve? I don't want to rush anything by any means. I understand and have a newfound respect the amount of time it takes to even get the fundamentals right. Any thoughts? Thank you so much for your instruction. :) You are my favorite KZread teacher. You are *THE* online piano & violin tutor!

Yes, if you play any other instrument it will help as you will know the music/theory side of things and you can then concentrate on learning how to play the instrument itself.

This is a great video.. i've just gone through about 30 others and yours is the best for showing exactly how the hand should be placed on the violin. ONE QUESTION. in virtually all the other videos, they don't do the roll from nail to nail thing They flatten the first finger joint to hit that lower pitch. As soon as they start vibrating at a faster frequency, it ends up looking more like a roll, because i imagine its not easy to flip that finger joint so quickly. Is there a reason why you show the roll-the-finger-from-nail-to=nail method rather than collapsing the finger at the first joint ? thanks

I don’t know - it must be them, or that they do arm vibrato whereas I do and teach wrist vibrato. Both are essentially the same with the same outcome, but one will naturally learn towards one way or the other. For me, it’s wrist. Whatever you do, I would say choose one video/reference/teacher etc and stick with it rather than videoing hoping about as each person will vary slightly in their technique and explanation which will probably end up hindering you more than helping you.

This video shows you placing your left thumb directly under the neck of the violin (to support the violin, I'm sure) but it seems that most people learn to initially play with the neck resting between the thumb and index finger. Do you intentionally shift your thumb under the neck to create vibrato, then shift back to continue playing, or do you always play that way? I'm having difficulty playing in tune when I keep my thumb under the neck.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

I play and teach that way. Some teachers teach with the thumb as you explain. In that case you may benefit from learning arm vibrato instead.

Hey Alison I've been watching your videos for a little more than a year now. I just want to say thankyou because you helped me choose what violin to buy and all these videos are really helpful. There are a lot of violin tutorials but I find that yours are the most helpful; that's why I subscribed. I've been playing for about a year now. Recently I haven't been practicing, it just seems kind of boring now. I don't really feel motivated to but I don't want to give up because all those lesson my parents payed for; it just seems like a waste. I'm not sure if I should keep on going or stop. I wanted to be good violin player like you I've told myself that. I was amazed because you're so fukin good. I don't know anymore though what im suppose to do. So I was wondering if you could give me some words of wisdom lol

Perhaps its what you are playing that is not motivating you - I usually find when students lose their 'mojo' its usually due to the music. Decide what music you like and want to play, then find some for your level. I have a lot of easy stuff on my Patreon page and you can also request for me to write out and arrange pieces into easy versions: www.patreon.com/theonlinepianotutor Not only that, but there are hundreds of pieces of sheet music available there. Take a look and any questions about it, just ask.
