How to View the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn

Ғылым және технология

In late December 2020, the two largest planets in our Solar System, Jupiter and Saturn, will be so close in the sky that they’ll both be visible through a telescope eyepiece at the same time. Such close passes are known as Great Conjunctions. The Great Conjunction of 2020 will be the closest in almost 400 years.
This video explains what Great Conjunctions are and tells you how and when you may be able to see the Great Conjunction of 2020. It also describes what you may expect to be able to see by eye, using binoculars, or through a telescope.
In late December, astronomers from the University of Exeter are also planning to try to live-stream a view of the Great Conjunction from a telescope over the internet. For more information, sign-up at:

The simulations of Jupiter and Saturn in the sky were produced using the Stellarium software, which is free, open source, and works on a variety of computer platforms: stellarium.org
The animation of the orbits of the planets was produced using a modified version of the Python code written by ChongChong He and available at: github.com/chongchonghe/Pytho...

You to eh? There's an eclipse in north Africa later this decade, a really good one, totality over 6 minutes near Luxor. Now Luxor is a famously hot and sunny place but if you hear on the news that it was cloudy there on the day then you can be quite certain that I made it to the event.

This means that people in the US have a chance of seeing the alignment, and this means that I can finally image the planets (video of it coming soon).

Have not seen any other work depicting this concept so clearly so far. Thanks for bringing this out. In our educational channel as well, my little son and I have posted a general awareness quiz covering Dec 2020 events including this great conjunction. Interested ones can watch our works as well. It is great to be on this learn and share youtube platform where we can all form a like minded continuous-learning community around us. Our best wishes to this channel as well.

If these two planets are visible in the night sky in southern hemisphere for months, then what's new about the conjunction of 21st? I mean, we see the planets and it means they're close to us and will just align in that day, why people make conspirancy theories about that day? LOL this happens like every 20 years and it occured again back in the middle ages and 17th century.

Thank you, Dr. Bates. And thank you for your animations of star and star cluster formation. I have used them (with attribution) in several presentations I have made over the years for my astronomy club. In California, our window of opportunity on the 21st will include Ganymede in transit across Jupiter's disk. Ganymede's shadow will begin transiting when Jupiter is just above the horizon so we will probably miss that part. I still need to check other nights either side of the 21st for other planet and shadow transits. With the UK eight hours ahead of us, your window of opportunity on the 21st occurs before the transit. I didn't check other nights, but you will probably have some planet or shadow transit worth catching.

Do keep trying over the next few days. They'll still be quite close together over the next week -- still worth seeing. You just need a short break in the clouds in the right place and at the right time. We saw them in Exeter again this evening for about 20 minutes through holes in the cloud.

Is this what you're referring to? kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqtkpbGCopvAf84.html I'd like people's opinions on this star if Bethlehem. When Jupiter Saturn and Venus retrograded this year the Beirut port explosion occured. Also the national symbol of Israel is the eilat stone which is represented in astrology by Saturn Venus and Jupiter

Mars will trine with Jupiter and Saturn too on 12-21-20. Exactly 8 years to the day after the mayan calendar ended.. Mars July and Saturn all together like a bright star!! Been watching this all year!!!

A most excellent presentation, thank you! I've signed up for the email updates, with a question which I'll repeat here for others' benefit: Exeter, UK is at roughly 50N latitude. So your calculations for viewing times and directions would apply to anywhere on Earth at that latitude, true?

  • @matthewbate5815

    @matthewbate5815

    3 жыл бұрын

Yes, exactly. The viewing times and directions are pretty much the same for anywhere at a particular latitude, you just need to adjust the time relative to the local time of sunset. i.e. from most places, should be able to see Jupiter and Saturn from about 1/2 hour to 2 hours after the time of *local* sunset. Even the direction doesn't change much with latitude (either in the southwest or west-southwest). But the height above the horizon is better the nearer you are to the equator.

Really enjoyed that graphic, many thanks!!!! (Home 2080 isn't mega-covid), is a malific planet douching a benific??? Do Saturn and Jupiter get along? Who knows. Now I get why they used to bother with all those standing stones....theyre cool.

Does anyone know how low a “low magnification” is? I have a 3x-9x scope laying around.

You should be able to see the Galilean moons with 9x magnification, but not Saturn's rings.
