Thanks Gary. This video was incredibly informative. Nice clear presentation of the method with good details. I have been installing asphalt shingles for a long time but only done a few metal roofs. I am going to quote a big one and couldn't exactly picture how the venting on the soffit went together. Instead of painting, I think I'll get some stock vented aluminum soffit and f-channel, then make some fascia on a brake to tuck up under the drip edge. Thanks again, great video!

Can you link your ridge vent video? You hint to it in your video but I cannot find it....I really appreciate your mockup here. Well done

I know how to vent roofs, however you failed to inform how to also ventilate at the abutment.

what about the occasional hail storm, the open areas under the metal would let it bend down with large hail

Thanks for the question! We have more than our share of hails storms here and occasionally they get extreme in isolated areas, but most hail storms come with hail under golfball size and we've found this installation doesn't affect the performance of the roof. What matters is the thickness of the metal. We recommend 24 gauge steel for all standing seam roof applications.

Will this venting system serve to vent the roof rafters and insulation below the roof deck?

The best application is foam insulation between the rafters, enveloping the entire attic space, as cool space.

@Exteriors by Gary Whillock thank you. Part of my house has a cathedral ceiling and the other attic space. I’m planning to put a new roof (2x6 rafters) over the old one (after stripping the old shingles off) to eliminate a shallow double pitch on the north side, creating one continuous span from eve to peak and the south side we would just lay the rafters on top of the old roof decking. This will also give me the opportunity to add more insulation as well. Is it advisable to vent the new metal roof as you described in the video as well? If so, would you connect it to the old soffit, through the new rafter tails, to skip sheathing? Thank you!

@@philipfreypainter I wish I could be of more help, but I am in central Texas, a very hot reagon, and though I live in Colorado for a number of years, I never tried this in a cooler climate, let alone one with likely high moisture. Best of luck, thanks for reaching out.
