I did want Ben was saying about budgeting ahead a couple months for all the necessary expenses. That was what I did for budgeting tuition, gas, insurance, books and anything else. I knew what my surplus was and applied that to tuition to minimize student loans. Shoutout to YNAB4!

On the splitting bills with roommates topic, Nick True has some really good videos that cover how to do that in YNAB. They're not specifically for college, but they should prove helpful. I'd set it up a few different ways in YNAB & see which one fits best.

I have a category to cover my roommate (who's my boyfriend) if times get tough. I call it "You Jump, I Jump, Jack" - It really came in clutch during early pandemic!

I started YNAB late February of my first year at uni - it's a lifesaver! I'm now beginning my third year and I can't imagine life without YNAB!

Tips for fellow students, especially those in the UK and other countries with a drinking age of 18 - there is usually free booze somewhere on campus on a Friday or Saturday night. YNAB will show you how much you can save if you seek that free stuff out. Also, free food is usually available somewhere, and this gives you a great chance to meet new people as well, so take advantage of that! Use the money you save on a week-to-week basis to fund trips during your time off. Taking trips during uni is always worth it! Another tip for free booze - if you go to a nicer bar in town and chat with older people instead of students they will sometimes buy you drinks in exchange for hearing about your college experience, especially if they did a similar degree. This means you get a good chat with someone with more experience than you and a free drink to boot!

and yes, the predatory credit card thing back then - I got a Mastercard my second day of orientation, and earned long distance minutes from each purchase (no cell phones, kids) and thought I was being so smart. Reader, I was not being so smart...

Well...it took me 5 years to graduate, so here's to the class of '02! And oh my goodness, I totally forgot about long distance minutes. Crazy to think that was actually a thing, lol. ~Ernie

This video is a great concept, but basing advice to students on very anecdotal "facts" and differences of what you did back in the day is not very helpful. If you could talk to some current students about how to handle stuff right now that would be great. It's kinda interesting to hear about how college used to be, but it just made the video really long. 70% of full-time undergraduates (according to the Georgetown report) work while in school because college is so expensive now, so the advice based on what college was like 15 and 25 years ago isn't going to help most current college students.
