+PLASMO - plastic models also, u used MIG's enamel oil paint thinner. will regular enamel thinner do the job because 75ml for that bottle of thinner is 12 bucks. And I think that's a little too high..

+Jefferson Sheng (EXIACXA3740) Yes of course you can use enamel thinner but be careful. Some type of enamel thinner are more aggressive and could damage paint work. I tried x20 tamiya enamel thinner. It is cheaper than mig and work with no problems.

Hi, today I was doing the barnishing of the model and I stuck with a big TROUBLE: the tamiya x-22 doenst cover the model as you show in the video (example of the f35 model) its covers like a strange cape of tiny brits. Seems like the tamiya clear barnish needs a solvent... I have no idea about how to solve this... Please post me an answer.

That was a VERY effective tutorial David. I have had mixed results with my past experience and now I know why. I was left to build and paint and only pin wash. The result was like a new aircraft right out of the factory. I learned much on this tutorial and would love to see more wash tutorials like these that go into greater detail if possible. In any case, thanks for taking the time to share you most excellent techniques.

There comes a point when modelling crosses over into being art! I’ve only been doing it 18 months and every time I finish a project and I’m pleased with the results,I look at tutorials like this and realise how crappy my efforts are!

Brilliant and very enlightening. As a marine modeller, I will be using these techniques on my 1:32, 1:36, 1:50 and 1:96 scale radio-controlled models. There are some great model ships and boats out there, but all are spoiled by over-clean, over-glossy, or over-bright paint, along with poor weathering. Thanks again for sharing your skills with us.

I found this video really useful. I use Vallejo wash for small things like cockpits or gear bays but when it dries it has a dirty look and there are some sharp transitions as well as areas where the wash built up. I just recently experimented with oil wash on my Airfix Hurricane and the results were very nice. Some people say that doing washes makes the model look good but unrealistic but I think that having it look good is much more important than realism.

  • @idaemonplasmo

I love your work. I'm trying to find out though, what paints do and do not work with the enamel washes. I painted a grill piece with testers silver and the tamiya ate it up. So what do you use to clear coat the model before you wash it? What types of clear can you use, especially a flat coat.

I have recently obtained large amounts of glycerine - do you think if I were to mix them with water + pigments, would the end result be similar to oil washes? Could I be able to wipe it off afterwards I wonder. Also do you think sludge washes could substitute for oil washes? Once again thanks for amazing videos & have a good one.

Wonderful video David. Have you ever considered MiG's Dark Wash for panel lines and rivets? It's a lot darker than Tamiya's brown panel line accent color. If I work on a plane I'll tell you if it works well, but maybe have you considered it? Also, what are the benefits from doing a pin wash (placing the wash only over the rivets and panel lines, and a slather wash (what you did with the oils, painting the entire model in it)? I always never know if I should paint the whole model with a wash or give it a pin wash. Sometimes it would look good, and other times it won't look good.

+Alaskafish Just like wrote spamstabber. "Oil washes are definitely the way forward for larger models, as it gets very expensive using premade washes otherwise". (other times it won't look good) When? it always look good. But you must choose right wash color. I think, the best is combination all technique together MiG's Dark Wash. It is great product. But first I must try it myself. Maybe I will order one for try.

Hi. First of all thanks for your videos. I just have a few questions. Would you recommend first applying surface primer and painting the whole model and applying clear gloss before using the washes? I have seen videos where they use an airbrush to preshade panel lines with a colour slightly darker than the base colour and then once everything is painted, they apply a clear gloss coat and then use washes. Does it make any difference ? I appreciate your comment. Thanks
