How would someone have managed to lock it, if they were on the other side of the door? Either someone was inside to lock them, and needs to unlock to open the door to get to the other side. Or the kid(s) were smart, big, handy enough to lock it by accident. which seems sufficiently prevented by needing to press the button to put the lock in place.

My front door has the same handle and can be opened from the outside If I have this device in the locked position on the inside, and close the door when I'm outside, I cant get in, even with a key. It's a clever device but I would hate to experience locking myself outside. I'll opt for a regular chain latch for front/back doors
