First, I cannot believe how quickly you can thread a machine !!! My late ( and beloved ) grandmother loved those Kenmore machines. She had a Singer # 201 in the 1950's when I was a child and in 1962 she bought a # 500, which for some reason she hated ( she loved to sew in knits and it was problematic for her ). She bought the "Sears best" Kenmore and loved it for knits and buttonholes.

If its any consolation, out of all the machines ive used. Ive only found Kenmore 158 series are designed to be threaded like that. I can't thread my two singers near that fast. Or my Kenmore 148. Not even my industrial can be threaded like that.

I bought a 158-1802 last year at an estate sale and the machine was in excellent condition, super clean.. with all these attachments that I had no idea how to use. I even noticed watching this video that I had thread a part of the machine backward, which now explains why the thread was breaking. Human error!!!

I'm having a great time finding and watching your videos. I realize this one's older but it's great. My 158-14001 came with the green plastic dial-a-buttonhole attachment. It was a bit cumbersome back in 1969 when I got it and still is, although it will make decent buttonholes. However, the metal version you show does a better job. I'm going to go find one for my 158-18800. Loved your demo! I've never tried to put button holes in a knit (for obvious reasons) but having seen this gives me all kinds of ideas. Thanks!

Yours is a helpful guide. It does have a cam. Thanks to you, the number code now makes sense (no manual came with it). Should just screw in the deck at the top with a thumb screw. Unless your kenmore dont support it. And you will need the gear plate too for it to drop onto. If you dont have that plate be careful theres like 3-4 different sizes make sure you measure twice before you buy. :)

I only have one Kenmore 158, It's the Kenmore 8, 158.13412, I got it second hand without any attachments and dial settings that I didn't understand. I've learned some of them like the zigzag and what the orange dot meant on the dial. I had to locate and buy a zipper foot and a zigzag foot, because it only came with the straight stitch foot, so far that was all I knew of to buy. I saw in one video they mentioned that the machine could do buttonholes but didn't show how, or if I needed any more attachments. The dial settings that look like they might make buttonholes are three rectangles, one with a heavy stroke (line) on the left; the middle one has heavy strokes top and bottom, then the last one has a heavy stroke on the right. I was hoping that meant I didn't need other attachments to make buttonholes, but I haven't been able to make anything but a mess.

You can try looking for feet at a good industrial sewing supply. In DTLA i have found all kinds of feet for my low shank - high shank is a little tougher to find. The pricing is not bad. All of the feet are either pronged or are used with a quick release attachment. ACE Sewing has almost any foot you might need. Begga in the next block also has feet that will fit (low shank). Good luck.

You would have to look in the book Kenmore had 3 plate systems there virtually all the same as far as the top plate and pretty much cross over to any of them as long as you got the correct gear plate theres quit a few different size of those. You would have to pull the part number from your book to get the right one or measure it exact if you blind by it.

I mean I suppose I could make one but im not sure how many people it would really help more then just entertain them. And it wouldnt be a really long video. Ill put it on the ducket for Just for you Freddie. That would be a super short and easy video.
