In this Photoshop tutorial you'll learn how to use the Gradient Tool, including the more recent addition of Gradient modes. These gradient modes make it much easier to preview your gradients with the use of live gradients. Although I still prefer the Classic Gradient, this is a great new addition to the tool that is easy to get confused by. So I hope the steps in this lesson make everything more clear for you the next time you use the Gradient Tool in Photoshop!

For using gradients with images I would typically just use a gradient map adjustment layer, which I have a tutorial about from a few weeks ago!

Not totally related, but kind of. Do you know if there is a way to replace a color used across multiple layers? For example if color A is used in a font, a shape, a color fill, a gradient, etc. is there a fast way to replace all areas of a certain hex code? An example would be similar to how MS PowerPoint has their color pallette in master slides. Or how you can replace a color across all pages in Canva.

Sorry new here, what’s the point of changing the “Gradient”?

THANK YOU FOR THIS. I teach at the University and have been a Photoshop user since 2.0. I'm sorry, but I can't figure out why they added this new tool. Where we and our digital major students need clarification is that in our previous processes, we chose color swatches to set the gradient tool colors or made the foreground transparent when using the gradient on a mask. It seems like Adobe could spend development money on more useful upgrades rather than this tool. After watching your video, I am still trying to figure out how I would want to use the gradient tool and where we could benefit from this device. It would be helpful if we could see this work on a real image instead of a blank white layer. I appreciate your clarity and forgive us, who started with Photoshop some 24 years ago.

Thanks for that feedback, youre not the first to say you dont see how that could be used in a real image. Perhaps thats something Ill put as a to do for another video.

How do you add gradients to a selected area? It keep's applying a mask and I don't want that! I need to be able to rasterize text, add gradient to the text (WITHOUT A MASK) and then dupe the layer and gaussian blur it. No one seems to have an answer to this. Please someone help.

Use a clipping mask between the gradient layer and the type layer. Then you can blur the rasterized text and the gradient still shows through.

Great, but hear me out, if Adobe would have done it's job properly when designing this tool, there would not be a need for a tutorial on how to use a basic tool such as gradients. On every other program is standard. You want a gradient? Click on the gradient tool, choose the mode you want your gradient to be (Transparent-Foreground, reverse of that, Two tone gradient), choose the type of gradient (radiant, linear or any other shape you want), click and drag on how long that gradient color should be and done. You got yourself a gradient. It amazes me that there is a team of people at Adobe who said down and said, let's do gradients the "Photoshop way". Choose the gradient mode or the classic gradient mode that do roughly the same thing, Enter layer options, update the colors by choosing each pivot point, Set a specific distance on how and what distance should be between each color, choose the style of your gradeient (Linear, Radiant, Spiral - Which si a half working radiant feature we had a bug but we transformed it into a feature, and a bunch of other mores that you will absolutely love not using because they are utterly useless), set the alpha for every Pivot point (because God forbid we name it opacity because we named that on every other tool), make you choose if you want a smooth gradient or a junky one (another bug we transformed into a feature), recite the Bible and do some more stuff, and done. You got yourself a gradient. The Photoshop way.

Your write up on the “photoshop way” made me laugh lol I 100% hear you. I think its difficult to balance beginners, hobby users, and professional needs all in the same program. The complexness offers tools useful for advanced users, but can be extremely roundabout and unnecessary for more casual uses. Thats my thoughts at least.
