Incase while using this function you need to filter dynamic columns. In this case for eg: App and Profit. Then the formula should be - =SORT(FILTER({C5:C,E5:E},B5:B=H6,D5:D>0,2,TRUE) You can arrange the columns however you want For eg: If you need Division and Profit =SORT(FILTER({A5:A,E5:E},B5:B=H6,D5:D>0,2,TRUE) There is a video for this by the same channel on how to do it on Excel and its quite different. Also, many people found it useful. For people who heavily depend on Google Sheets hope this helps.

But, I find that as more students add their responses, I have to manually adjust my filter formula to include the new line of data added to the top of the spreadsheet because I have a reverse sort for column A (Timestamp) so I can see the newest submissions first. Is there a way to NOT have to manually change my filter formula every time?

As always, thanks for the excellent tutorial. Loved it.... may I ask for a tip please? I basically want to be able to filter a range of columns. The usual formula is something like this: =Filter(Data!A2:Z,Data!A2:A = Choices!A2, Data!B2:B = Choices!B2) Where A2:Z is the range and the filter for column A is A2 and the filter for column B is B2. In other words, the user enters filter choices in A2 and B2. In future, I will extend to many columns A, B, C... The issue is A2 or B2 may sometimes be empty meaning no filtering is required for their respective columns. Hence, I probably need to add ‘IF’ into the Filter. But I can’t seem to crack it. Can you propose the formula by any chance?

You don't have to modify your formula. Just make sure the source data has record can match specified condition. Example, Choices!A2 = Apple and Choices!B2 is blank. As long as you have a record match these conditions, Filter can generate results for you.

I actually think I prefer the logical statements in Excel, than the multiple conditions in Sheets, I'm not sure why, perhaps I'm a traditionalist! I really wish they'd both offer the ability to aggregate though. Something like: FILTER(C5:E,B5:B6=H6,SUM(D5:D)>0) *, where filter is more akin to a SQL select and group by statement (although Excel could assume the groupings as implicit). Maybe sheets has something for this. *obviously, that wouldn't be applicable in this example as it is already grouped at app/region level, but app sales by division would need aggregated as a better example. Edit: I've probably got the syntax of the function wrong, we really just want to be able to specify the "Select" columns in the first criteria and the conditions (where clause) in the second criteria. Something like: =FILTER((C,D,SUM(E)),(B5:B6=H6)*(SUM(D5:D)>0))

  • @LeilaGharani

Hi Rico, agree -more flexibility in the function would have been great. Google sheets has the query function which can do everything you've listed here (it uses SQL syntax). I'll have to make a few videos on that for KZread. It would be great if Excel would a get a function like that.

Hi, Leila! Thank you for this helpful video! Your course is definitely on my list of to dos! Trying to build an internal inventory management system using Google Forms and sheets. Trying to combine two tabs onto another tab using two filter functions. I got that working. But I can’t seem to get the optional drop-down menu filter sections to tie in with the filtered summary data. For example, If the filter option for “Seller” has text value, I want the table with the two filter functions to update the filter based on what seller is in the filter drop-down. But the issue I think is some items have more than one seller each on their own line of text within a cell. So I don’t think the filter function will read partial text from the Seller column… :( Anyone happen to have in insight on this?

Does this effect the performance of workbooks with lots of formulas? 2) There is no screen tip for formulas like Excel in Google Sheet without having to press F1? 3) Can you evaluate formulas in GS like the F9 key in Excel? 4) Does GS have structured tables like Excel? Hi Sal - in regard to your questions: 1) To an extent but not like Excel. With Google sheets, the rows are restricted to 1000 rows - unless you need more then it of course expands. But because it's restricted, it's as if your formula goes to 1000 rows. In Excel this will go to the bottom of the workbook which will make files slower. 2) There is, but in my experience it seems if you turn if off once, it remembers and keeps it off unless you turn it back on. 3) Unfortunately not, you have to evaluate on the grid by breaking down the formula 4) No

Hi, I am using Google Sheets and want to use the filter option. In my case I would like to filter all columns (let's say from B to S) for a specific date (eg. 28.10.21) and return the value in column A (there could be the name). To not get the same name multiple times I already use the unique() function. But I can't get the filter() function to work. Is there anyway of doing that? Thank you =)

I am a HUGE fan of your videos. They have helped me with a lot if complex issues and I am very grateful for that. Did you cover the following yet and I have not found it? Inserting a text box in to Excel and link it with a formul? =VLOOKUP. I tried doing this accross various sheets (invoice - clients) but always receive an error message. Thank you.

Am glad to hear that :) You need to write your Vlookup formula in a cell somewhere (you can hide it from view) and then link the text box to the result of the Vlookup. You cannot have a formula inside the textbox.

Hi Leila - Can you hide columns in filter views? Let's say I have a column just for staff / internal use and I want to share a filter view with a client.

I have cells in table B that equal cells in Table A... a filter is applied to Table A and all the numbers get rearrange, because of this the values in Table B also change, I don't want the values in table B to change, i want the cells in table B that i have linked to table A to always show the original values of the cells they were linked to regardless of the filtered arrangement... so my question is how do I keep the cells in table B that have been linked to table A to follow the original values before the filter was applied?
