How to Use the E-4 With a MIDI Keyboard!
Today I'm demonstrating how to use the Roland E-4 Voice Tweaker with a MIDI keyboard, and why you might want to do such a thing. The E-4 has the function of it's older sibling, the VT-4, to take pitch data from an external MIDI source, and apply it to incoming microphone audio. This means that you can effectively play what you want to sing, including chords of up to four notes! It's incredibly useful, and I hope to see lots of E-4 users doing incredible things with this feature. Enjoy the video :)

If you need texts: just search for Laurie Anderson lyrics 🙂. She did a whole lot of vocoder / avant-garde style music in the 1980’s of which “O Superman” is the only song that got very famous, but her vocoder songs, particularly on the album “Big Science” are well worth a listen. The lyrics are often very weird and funny.

I just bought the E-4 a few weeks ago and already love it. Since the early 2000s I've not been too enamoured with a tonne of Roland gear, but I feel like the E-4 is destined to become a minor classic! At first I was kinda hesitant as it doesn't have a balanced XLR input, but I must admit it has a really good mic preamp. Using it with a SM-58 with a 1/4" Jack there is virtually no hiss/noise or feedback even at high levels they an amp/p.a.. I've found that it sounds even better sticking my old Boss CS-3 compressor in front. Currently I'm using it in the FX send/return of my old mixing desk. TBH I'm absolutely loving experimenting with just the Scatter and reverb on a bunch of my old analog synth and drum machines especially on the TB-303, it sounds wonderfully deranged!😁 I paid £143 for it which is great, it's worth it for the reverb and Vocoder function alone.

Instead of a bulky microphone, and stand - I just tested the E-4 with Teenage Engineering M-1 headset. ( a more compact solution :) ) The TRRS jack works , you can use the microphone and monitor with the headset .! I guess one would use the USB Type-C (Audio, MIDI) out while monitoring and using the microphone plugged into the E-4.

Hi great video, just discovered the Aria series. I have to say I'm very impressed. Very interesting in the E-4 but I do have a couple of questions. I've had the Antares Auto Tune for about 20 years and various software processors. The problem with the Antares is it is basically on or off. Wish it did like percentage etc. So how does the E-4 work as just an intonation processor? I'm interested in it mostly for live performance. I'm a woodwind player. Do you know of any videos that show the E-4 being used with woodwinds? Also, I suppose it can be, but when using it as a harmonizer can you send the chords from a sequencer? I play alot as a soloist, playing along with midi backgrounds or sometimes as a duo. Mostly very poor paying gigs. So I want to simplify as much as possible. Thanks for a great video!

Hi, I finally got the E-4! But I can not seem to find a way to change the darn tempo from the default 130bpm that shows up on the display when I first turn it on. Have you figured out how to change the tempo? It affects almost everything with respect to the effects, scatter, delay, looper, and is frustrating not even the online manual talks about how to change the darn tempo lol. Any help would be great. Also, do I have to use the battery all the time or can I plug the unit into a 5V brick and use it safely that way? A great device but at first try seems very limited.

I have been looking at these harmony solution devices for live use but I really want to have the harmony generation completely independent of the main vocal. Is it possible to do this - kind of a side-chain kind of solution? Perhaps with this - say I want to have part of the song doubled and part with a 3rd up - I suppose I could use a send from my main vocal channel and use the MIDI note generation and return to my ‘harminy channel’ to generate the harmonies? But yes I would also want parts of the song with just the main vocal.

I've been experimenting with my E-4 for weeks now and absolutely love it. I've been using the sequencer and arpeggiator on my MS-1 (Roland SH-101 clone) then singing thru the mic. I've also been feeding a distorted guitar signal into it from my old EHX Big Muff and Morley Wah, it's really a nifty sounding bit of gear, cheap too!😁

And what is the friend why? - I have: launchkey 25 mk Novation control keyboard and want to connect it for example: to CIRCUIT TRACKS. Or - for the Roland device / Roland Aira S-1 and use their sounds. Many thanks to the helpers.

Is there a way to send notes to the e4 and sing in tune based on what's being played via midi? So not fixing the singed notes to a single note as this video. Letting the singing notes change naturally as I'd sing but in tune. I hope that makes sense :) also when I turn on auto pitch I can't turn it off. The only way to remove the fixed singing controlled via midi is to turn off the device.
