How to use the Behringer TD-3 with a DAW/Sequencer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Please READ THE FAQ below before asking questions, thank you!
Behringer's TD-3 is a 2020 clone of Roland's famous TB-303 "Bass Line" monophonic synthesizer from 1982. In this video, I focus on how well the TD-3 interacts with an external DAW/Sequencer.

Before you ask, here is a summary of the comment section's most asked questions:
1. The TD-3's knobs do not send nor receive MIDI data (just like the original). They are purely analogue. You can neither record knob movements (filter etc.) via MIDI to the DAW nor play them back. The successor TD-3-MO allows contolling the filter via MIDI.
2. MIDI via USB is more functional than via the DIN port. It seems accents and slides work fine via USB, but cannot be reproduced when using the DIN port.
3. The USB port is for MIDI data only, it does not work as an audio interface, i.e. you cannot record audio via the USB port.
4. If sending/receiving of MIDI does not work, check that the MIDI channels match. You can cross-check the settings by connecting the TD-3 to Behringer's Synthtribe software.

I am happy that we can use this TD-3 by either following its original pipeline, and can always run it (multiple ways) through a DAW if we choose. This video showed me how flexible this device truly is. Thank you for making this video.

Great video, thank you very much! Like a few others in the comments I struggled to set up my TD-3 with Cubase at first, but then I found that with USB you have to open Cubase's Transport/Project Synchronisation and select the TD-3 to receive timecode (thanks to The Blackcurrant Moon Foundation) for their comment). Using MIDI cables it is a little simpler, however I needed to set the MIDI filter to omit Thru notes otherwise I got feedback loops from the TD-3. Anyway, I got there in the end so thanks again! 😀

@@LeadingMotive I tend to use a TB-03 more for happy accident stuff, but mostly because it has the second randomiser for making variations on the current pattern, and it's a little more conservative in it's randomisation. The TT-303 BassBot has my favourite randomiser but the VCA's on mine are knackered so I use that to control a Crave. The TD-3 does tend to throw up some pretty ugly stuff on occasion, so it can (and has) gone horribly wrong.. 😂

Interesting video. I recently put a deposit on one locally. So just been having a look-see to find out all about it meantime. And liking what am seeing. It seems a little more versatile than my Roland TB-3 (and am keen to try their TB-03 version as their ACB technology ROCKS!) with regards outboard functionality (Though there are now some free and paid 'editors' for the TB-3/03). I don't bother with the whole TB-303 vs TB-3 vs TD-3 and so on. Analogue vs Digital etc. I feel it wastes my time (Unless something is actually totally crap no matter how much you try to incorporate it). Exploit their differences, and exploit each's boundaries. Yeh, I'm looking forward to trying out this little box!

To my ears, the internal sequencer sounds better. Specifically the slides. I don't know exactly how behringer has built the cirquitry of the sequencer, but if they have indeed copied the cirquits of the 303, there should be something other than a midi trigger to those slides. Maybe it's all in my mind but I really think the slides sound more tight. You should be able to import sequences into the td-3 via the software editor and save them to a pattern slot. Try it and see if you can hear a difference too. Programming the td3 is not too hard. If you follow a guide and do it a few times, you'll learn how to do it.

Do you mean whether you can prevent the TD-3's sequencer from sending MIDI out? Not to my knowledge. A workaround would be to either (1) block/filter the incoming channel/port in the DAW or (2) use a MIDI cable instead of USB, as this allows you to send MIDI one way only (DAW to TD-3 MIDI in).

For the video, I used the USB connector. If you are using a MIDI cable instead of USB, you need to press "MIDI" instead of "USB" on the TD-3 at 1:24.

For syncing you have to decide which component of your setup is the master. Typically that is the DAW, which should be able to send MIDI clock to several machines at the same time. If however you need the TR-8 to be the master then it might be tricky. You could connect the TR-8 to the TD-3 directly. I'm not sure whether you can slave the DAW to the TR-8 while at the same time slaving the TD-3 to the DAW. I can use a delay on the channel but the problem is that the delay is not consistent and varies between 20 and 70ms so I can not use a static delay. My soundcard delay should only be 3ms (128 buffer length). Is this something you experienced or know how to fix? 2) When playing from the sequencer glide is working perfectly, but when recording MIDI notes from the TD-3 into FL Studio and then playing them back, the TD-3 skips notes where glide has been used (2 notes playing at the same time in the MIDI pattern). Is this something you experienced When I play the notes live on my keyboard like you did, glide is working however.

Unfortunately I have not used the TD-3 much, I'll try to answer as well as I can: (1) MIDI sync offset (delay) is a common issue on a lot of gear, the TD-3 is not an exception. Time variation should not occur; it might be due to the MIDI interface/USB. I had many issues with MIDI timing over the years with various interfaces. (2) I did not notice that, weird! Sounds as if for the internal sequencer this trick works, but once you record the MIDI output and then play it back to the TD-3 it won't anymore. Seems you'll have to edit/correct those notes manually in the DAW.

@@LeadingMotive Thank you for your reply! In the meanwhile I was able to identify the issue of the fluctuating time sync issues and anticipate to it. For anyone that it concerns: The problem was caused by the start/stop button being active or inactive by the time that I press play on my DAW. When the button was not yet active it took the TD-3 longer to start the sequence (higher delay) and the delay time was fluctuating. If I manually press the start/stop button on the TD-3 already before pressing play in the DAW (the pattern will not start because the unit is in MIDI/USB mode) the delay will still be +-60ms but it is a pretty consistent delay (between 55-65ms) so I can use a static delay set on the mixer to anticipate to the delay already and just finetune the +-5ms that are left manually afterwards.

I may have missed it in your video; but is there a setting on the TD-3 to make it not play it's built in sequencer; but only notes received through midi? In the video it seems like it was a setting on your DAW rather than on the TD-3. Do you have any insight on this? Thanks a bunch.

I'm not familiar with the 707, but you might be able to disable its sync settings. Or then alternatively, try switching the TD-3's sync settings to internal - see my video 1:12 to 1:26 but press "INT" instead of "USB". I would assume that should prevent it from getting synced but still let it play incoming notes.

If you have a controller with MIDI out you can play the TD-3 directly. If your controller has USB only then you have to go via a host (computer), direct USB would not work. By playing from a controller you can play whatever without having to use the built-in sequencer. I did not check the range but since it is analog I would assume it has the full MIDI note range.

Do you want to use the TD-3 as a sound module, playing it on an external MIDI keyboard via a DAW? Then you have to connect the TD-3 to the computer via USB or MIDI cable (DAW out to TD-3 in). You then instruct the DAW (this should be a track setting) to send the keyboard's incoming MIDI notes to the TD-3 on MIDI channel 1. This should not require any change to the TD-3's settings.

Why can't Behringer give us MIDI CC for the knobs on the Model D, VC340, Odyssey, TD3. That means we have to perform a Sysex Dump or have to manually turn them while recording audio instead?! They should update this on their next FIRMWARE UPDATE!

@@hopeaccelerated Those knobs are purely analog, they cannot be made to carry digital values. This cannot be changed via a firmware update, nor can you transfer the analog setup via SysEx.

I want to use the internal sequencer but sync to the tempo in Logic Pro via USB. When I try USB sync it only responds to midi notes. Anyone know how to change this?

Did you switch the TD-3's synchronization on, like shown at 1:13?

@@LeadingMotiveyes, push the two buttons to sync then select USB. It now responds to midi notes from Logic and the project tempo, but the internal sequencer no longer works.

@@gingataff Hm, sounds like the TD-3 is waiting for sync signals. Is the DAW sending MIDI clock to the correct MIDI port (USB)?

@@LeadingMotive I'll need to check that. It could be beyond my understanding as this is the first time I've tried to control an external device using midi from Logic. But thanks for giving me a place to look!

I'm wanting to connect my TD3 to my verselab, anyone know if this is possible?

If you mean the Roland Verselab MV-1 then it should be possible, as both have MIDI connectors. Don't have the MV-1 so I cannot comment on details. USB probably won't work.

Hi sorry for the long comment but I really hope you or anyone can help me. Do you know if its possible to record live filter automation as midi data from the td-3? I'm using the sequencer in my daw (ableton) and connected through usb. When I press record and move the filter or any rotary, no data is recorded? I Don't have this issue with my other Synths (minilogue, bs2) and the midi preferences are set up the exact same so just wondering if there's something I'm missing? Thanks

The TD-3 has analog potentiometers that do not send MIDI data. Also the filters etc. are directly controlled by the potentiometers. Therefore what you are attempting is not possible. The other synths you mention must have digital controls with MIDI capabilities. That's more expensive though and would most likely have increased the TD-3's price.
