How to use steel shot in an old English side-by-side

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Mark from Rowland Watson Gunmakers says he's been using steel shot in his own English gun, built in 1903, for many years with no ill effects at all. If you want to do the same, just follow his simple advice.

We've shot steel in Denmark for years without major issues. Some guns can develop a bulge at the end of the barrel especially with tight chokes and/or soft barrels, but that's about it. Half choke (fixed) is abt. 20/1000 - the Mod. choke commonly used as max. for steel here is abt. 28/1000. As the man says 1/4 - 1/2 maximum and You'll be fine me think. You can always get low-pressure or bismuth cartridges. Great video!

Here in the USA there are very. very few competant gunsmith qualified to do this with shot guns . Also the american steel shot cartridges are loaded the much higher pressures ( unknown unless you test them in a proof barrel for pressure .

We shot steel through a Stevens 5100 SxS and it cracked both barrels at the choke end. This guy is dead wrong. Don't ever put steel through anything not specifically rated for it from the manufacturer.

I wish US gunsmiths would pay better attention to what is going on here. they would much rather sell you a new gun than a box of ammo. it took me about four years of research. to find out steel is fine in almost every US made shotgun. so long as the choke is opened up. No SAAMI load exceeds the UK's "Standard Steel loads"

It’s just a matter of time here in the states before steel shot will be the only shot.

Steel shot has been mandatory for all waterfowl (duck, geese) hunting in the entire USA since 1991. However lead continues to be legal for other types of hunting… except in communist California. Since 2019, non toxic shot has been mandatory in ALL of California, for not just waterfowl, but everything. In California, we are used to shooting steel shot and it works just fine, as long as you go UP one or two shot sizes with steel and one or maybe two choke sizes WIDER in diameter when shooting and hunting with steel. For example, in my side-by-side 12ga, I used to shoot #7.5 lead with an Improved Cylinder (1/4 bore) in the first barrel and the 2nd barrel a Modified (1/2) choke. When switching to steel, I went up in size to #6 steel shot (because there is no 5.5 here) and increased choke diameter in barrel #1 with a Skeet (1/8) choke and barrel #2 an Improved cylinder (1/4) choke. When one changes the shot and choke size combos accordingly, you really can’t tell any difference in performance when taking game with steel. Steel shot two sizes larger than lead and with a modified (1/2) choke, performs almost identically as lead going through a full choke. The pattern stays really tight with steel and this is another reason why you don’t want to shoot tighter chokes than modified (1/2) with steel. Steel doesn’t compress like lead and could damage the barrel with tighter chokes.

Curious if he will pay for any damage my gun gets shooting steel. My guess is he won’t. That says everything that needs to be said.

rubbish, those of us who have old guns with tight choke who are poor, we cannot use steel shot, simple as that. this push to ban lead is based on englands hunting game, too supply toffs in england, well just regulate it for those and pass on the cost to them. leave us who hunt for our own food alone. all i see on english youtube or tv shows is a push for non lead.

If they find a viable alternative to lead shot, I'm all for it. But as it stands, the lead free alternatives are either too expensive for training purposes, or out right dangerous. (Ricoschets)

@@cinnreds18 very poor, we are very lucky if we can buy steel for almost a dollar a shot here. i am disabled, have been since i was 26 back in the 1990s. so i dont own a house even. but i wont give up on hunting, its my life. our gov is putting everything up all the time, they want hunting gone.
