How to use pocket notebooks (and document your life)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is my exact method for using a pocket notebook for goal setting and daily ideas. I prefer to use Moleskine or Field Notes pocket journals for my EDC (everyday carry) note system. Embrace digital minimalism and replace your phone with this handy notebook setup! I've found that this is the best way to stay organized in my thoughts, and document my daily life.

Hey everyone! Here is a written version of the 4-step process for using these notebooks for quarterly goal setting: 1. Write your quarterly goal on the inside of the back cover of the notebook (or the last page - whichever you prefer) 2. Write a daily progress update about the action you took to pursue that goal 3. Document any ideas, thoughts, or to-dos that come to mind 4. Review your ideas and goals weekly, and add or edit them as needed Let me know how this works for you! Stay stoked to achieve those 2024 goals!

Simple, actionable, to the point. I have found that my notebook was getting very confusing with both work and personal notes so go from first page to last with personal notes, and then last page to first with work notes. When they meet, the book is full and its time to start a new one. This way lets me focus on just work ideas or just personal ideas rather than both at the same time. Thanks for making this Eric!

That's quite the approach. Didn't think about it. Because at work I use a different notebook as it makes me solely only focus on work, while for personal, I carry around pocket notebooks. But the approach you just described is handy!

Thank you for this video. I'm at the moment reevaluating my methods of note taking (moving from 100% digital to a mix that starts with capturing analog) and do aim for a simple process, not something over complicated. Your process is exactly that. Might end up with something very similar to what you are doing.

Awesome, great to hear! I find that having an analog/digital mix works best for me, with most of my main ideas originating in the pocket notebook first. You can always expand into digital from there. Thanks for the feedback sir. Happy note taking!

I love the portability of the pocket notebooks and have all kinds of notes on them. Do you find that you transfer your relevant notes to a larger notebook? You seem to keep all the pocket notebooks but I tend to cross everything out so it wouldn't be good for me to archive my pocket notebooks.

  • @ericpfohl

They’re the best! I personally do not transfer my best ideas to another specific notebook. But, if there’s a topic I want to expand upon by writing more in depth about it, I will use my “big idea” from my pocket notebook as the topic for a writing session in Notion on my laptop. Thanks for the comment Francisco!

Those little notebooks end in few months, and a regular a5 journal a bit more than 1 year. So if you want to keep a log of many years, and write a lot as I do, the right choice is a plain txt file, with a good non distracting editing software. Colder i know, but cheeper.

I use notebooks to be more lazy. When I get an idea or thought I mull it around in my head at the exclusion of everything else. Now when I have an idea, write it down, go about my day doing nothing, review the idea later an realize it’s stupid, go back to doing nothing. Not all ideas are worthy.
