How to use House Plants in Your Aquarium (In Depth)
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
How to use houseplants in an aquarium. There are several ways of doing it. A hang on the back filter is a good option for planting house plants. We decided to try planting them in pots in the top of the aquarium. We use Clay pebbles and a fine gravel. The plants we used were Pothos, Golden Ribbon and Lucky Bamboo. You cannot even see the pots in the tank due to the black background. Using plants in the aquarium will help draw out nitrates from the tank.

What type of plant?
Thanks for this video. It is really nice to see the process from start to finish. I've thought a lot about adding house plants to my aquarium, but wasn't really sure where to start. And now, thanks to you, I think I'm ready to take the plunge. Thank you again!
I just have a Pearl and Jade Pothos Plant on one corner and Pothos Plant on the other 3 corners. They are growing and doing well! Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed watching! Both plants I got at Walmart for less than six dollars.
This is eeeexactly the video I needed this week! I was wondering about my pothos. Thank youuu
You have a soothing voice. Your videos sound unedited and unscripted. If they were longer , I would go to sleep listening to them.
This is such a cool idea and the setup looks great. ❤️
I enjoyed watching... thank you for sharing this video. Keep it up! Happy Fish Keeping!
I have bamboo and pothos stuck in my filter by the motor and they're doing great!
Amazing video. 👍 I've personally never used non aquatics plants for aquarium but will definitely give this a try. I'm not an expert with stem plant propagation however i would share my experiences which have proven successful. 1. I use terracotta pots as its more natural and it provides dark area for the roots to grow. You could silicone the holes so it could hold water as for water propagation method. Important tip roots grow best in dark so i use pots that dont let light throught the sides. 2. When propagation of plant cuttings especially for getting rootings you should cut the leaves in half. This way more of the energy is used for rooting than sustaining the existing leaf. 3. Although the plant cuttings once healthy would promote rooting growth, I've found that to speed up method is by adding rooting hormones. I use it as per directions on the bottle. 4. If not using rooting hormones i would use a balanced NPK fertilizer. Mix separately in gallon and add few drops each time i change water. 5. Temperatures. I try to keep them in an area which has constant warm temperature as this facilitates growth. Once i see proper rooting system i would transplant into whatever growing medium you prefer. With these basic steps you could get faster rooting and plant growth. Hopefully this helps. Best of luck.
Great video! I've been looking to do something similar with my 65 gallon. Thank you!!

The Roots tend to sprout from the little dark reddish spikes on the pothos stem. The green ribbon Dracenea aka lucky bamboo, does well in an aquatic setup also either sticking out of the water or completely submerged. Another aquatic plant which is doing extremely well for me is the Java moss.
First!! I love your videos.

That’s an awesome idea with the small planters, I’ve been wanting to add Pothos and Lucky Bamboo to my 125gal tank for a long time and was not sure how I would do it, especially with no HOB filters and having two FX6’s running the tank and afraid the fish would eat the plants at the roots. I’m definitely gonna fab one of the back corners up like you did and go with a few different plants now that I know a good way of doing it. Thanks, and keep up the great videos.

@@williamtietz4384 Try looking up the site MD Fish Tanks, he has a lot of tanks including ones with the fish you mention, and in several has various house plants growing. He simply goes to the supermarket and buys them when he's setting up a new system. They basically go wild after a short while and add immensely to the beauty of the tanks. He also has a very simple way of adding them to the water which doesn't involve pots or anything like that. As to the bamboo (actually Dracaena), you need to keep the roots in water BUT you must have the leaves ABOVE the water level. The stems can go in the water, another KZread channel Asu has made a couple of scapes with the lucky bamboo standing in for real bamboo and they stems themselves are totally submerged into the gravel on the bottom, but the leaves MUST be above the water or they will rot and pollute the water. Hope this is of some help.

I absolutely love your sharks in your tank.
Can the same be done with Peace lilys? I have a peace lily in the aquarium -top leaves outside water rest of plant submerged
how did the one with no roots that went straight into the aquarium do?
Maybe a stupid question but what holds the plant pots in place? I have the foldable lid with the plastic piece at the back I was thinking of trimming to make room for a basket or 2 if I could find small enough ones and try my luck at some pothos, the bamboo is cool as well tho 🤔
I used lava rock for mine and aquarium gravel.
I have a mini aloe plant . My betta was missing a plant in his tank , the plant has the spikes on the sides . Is it ok to be in the tank or should I remove it ? So far my beta is doing well but what should I do?
Hi how do we know if the plastic used in the pots are safe for our fish? I have a lot that look like yours. My dad brought them from work so I am unsure but really want to try this. Could anyone give me their opinion? Thank you!
Do the bottom of the pots have holes? Will the roots push thru into the tank or is it a small hole to jus allow the water to nurture the plants?
can you make video update to this system, how tall are the plant now ?
I have 6 pothos plants in my 110 gal stock tank under water & they have really grown but they should have a GOOD root system going as they don't do very well without it I separated mine from the pot they were in, & washed the roots off & put them in the black blasting sand I have in the tank, but didn't put ALL the root system in the sand just enough to hold it down, I left some of it out & they have really taken off in there.

Yeah, it makes sense that plants take off in aquarium water. Nitrogen is pretty much the building block for literally everything about a plant and they use an incredible amount of it constantly- Due to soil having less nitrogen than water does, land plants have to adapt to use and find nitrogen efficiently. So when you stick a potted plant in aquarium water, the plant goes mental due to finding so much nitrogen.
I love the look of your tank 😀 what did you use to separate the two colors of gravel? I really want to try that look in mine thank you 🐠

It's the material we use to make our tank dividers that we sell on our website.
Are use this method works really well if you want to stop the gravel falling out of the pot just put a piece of filter floss in the bottom the roots grow through it no problem at all it just stops the substrate falling out👍

Great video! Question: How do you keep the pots attached to the back glass of the tank? Suction cups?
@silkqueen8498
3 жыл бұрын
Good question
If you add a pump to squirt water on the pots it will filter better the way you have it the plants can only filter the water that is already in the pots until the roots grow out threw the holes
Were do u get the clay pebbles?
Can you actually trim the bamboo roots or is it toxic to do that?
Can i use ferns?
Great video! I run an aquatic discord if you would ever like a spot to show off what you got in some pics and maybe have a bit more interactivity with users and maybe find some new subs when I would add your videos to our bot to autopost your videos!

Can I use horsetail bamboo
Will this mess with my filter when I clean it? Like will the roots prevent me from cleaning my filter.
@chrisjones2569
4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you set it up if you do the hang on back like she showed you don't need to clean it but if you did no the roots want hurt it if you have the roots just hanging in the tank don't put them next to the filter so it doesn't suck up the roots
Submersed plants absorb ammonia (before bacteria can process it) first than nitrates and the emersed plant would absorb nitrates, it's a perfect synergy.
Ingenious idea 🙌🏻 , need to know how many holes does single pot has.. n need to know where( or specific surface ) holes are.. ty

I'm having the same issue with my tank. I've put quite a few pothos in my tank, and I'm just letting their root system trail down into the water. Unfortunately, my Oscar and severum are having a field day with pulling the plants down into their tank by pulling the roots. I'm thinking of switching to a more contained system like this one. Has it worked for you? I'm concerned the roots won't have as much room, or won't get as much of the nutrients by being in containers.
Do you have to cut them and then add them to a jar/cup? Or can you just add the trimmings to the aquarium and let them grow the roots out that way?
@Lifewithpets72
4 жыл бұрын
You can just add the roots to the aquarium too.
We got tons of dracaenas or lucky bamboo here in our yard, all of 'em are wild🤣

Lifewithpets thanks Sheila 12 yrs to think and plan, you tube is a massive help, speaking of help thankyou for yours...
Pothos do better transitioning from water to the aquarium because the roots are already acclimated to drawing nutrients from only water as opposed to being acclimated to soil and then being stuck right into water :) it doesn’t shock the roots going from water to water :)
what happens if those lucky bamboos are completely submerged in the tank? Would they survive or rot ?

They will likely rot over time.
I bought a planted potho and I cleaned the roots throughly, does anyone know if anything in the soil could be harmful to the fish tank?
@trevormiddleton2979
3 жыл бұрын
I don't specifically, I know some soils can have unwanted bacterium but I've also seen people who advocate for using normal potting soil for their substrate. They did warn though about just using common dirt and specified you should go with potting soil. Don't know if this will really help but hopefully the interaction with get other commenters. Personally I think if I felt they were well cleaned I probably would but I don't want you do do anything you're uncomfortable with. They will live in tap water too if you want to "buffer" them in-between to get more soil off
