Thanks for the video - good histogram primer ! And thanks for the "blinkies" explanation, I wondered what that represented... so now I know. I have a Canon 1200D and I did see those blinkies when I was imaging the lunar eclipse last month. When it was getting close to full eclipse, I would get the blinkies on the bright sun-lit areas of the moon. So next time that happens, should I adjust my shutter speed or ISO ?

"should I adjust my shutter speed or ISO?" This is a great question. As a general rule, I always go to my ISO first. Again, with another general rule, the lower the iso the cleaner the image. Keep in mind though that sometimes you just have to blow out certain parts of the image. As you bring down the iso you're also going to bring down not just the bright parts but the darker parts as well. Which brings us all back to the histogram. If you are not climbing up the left wall you can still recover those darker areas. Having shot the eclipse as well, and knowing exactly what you're talking about, you will have to accept a certain amount of blowing out, but find the balance that suits you. I hope this helped. Does anyone have any help or suggestions please. I am on a steep learning curve here and need a little help or nudge in the right direction. I’ve never used a DSLR before and just got one. I have been using a small planetary dedicated camera where the histogram is adjusted in live view, real time. With DSLR am I correct in thinking I have to take a picture, note the histogram position, then adjust the ISO and take another picture and check the histogram again and so on until I achieve the correct histogram position?

@Royz View you of course always do have the option of opening aperture more or doing a longer exposure and if course the ISO. But you are correct in shoot, look, adjust.
