Apart from obviously being a skilled artist, you have a real knack for conveying information in a clear, organized and understandable way. Pedagogy is its own skill set, quite apart from making art, and I really appreciate your way of teaching. This was very informative.

Yes indeed, very helpful. There are so many demos/tutorials that I like, but don't fully understand why they're doing things in a certain way. This was a really well planned lesson and I will certainly give it a go.
That horse painting was an absolute masterpiece and it was just in between pages - you are so talented !!

That’s because it literally is a “master piece!” She did what’s called a master study of Rosa Bonheur’s painting “The Horse Fair.” Many classically trained artists will essentially “copy” an artwork to study how a master would paint. It helps train for colour precision, lighting, subject composition, etc.

@@Allmylovelyc thank you that’s very helpful to know- I struggle with not wanting to ‘copy’ artists even though I know I will learn from it as I’m scared to then venture out on my own and most times fail 🤫
I love that you never had and solid “do this” or “don’t do this” statements in this video and instead focused on possibilities and experimentation. So many tutorials that I’ve watched seem to just be about telling people what to do and not do which I think can hurt beginning artists’ creative journey. This was a very good and inspiring tutorial!

Thank you!! That means a lot. A long time ago when I was a wee artist, one of my art friends online (whom I really admired, they were already an art director at a company before I had gone to college) told me that they never took anyone seriously who thought their art tips were law. So... I try not to do that! Everyone learns for their entire life.
the complimentary one reminds me of children's books that show toys at night with light from the hall shining in
This is the best underpainting tutorial I've ever seen. I am still a beginner with painting and color theory, but I didn't know that underpaintings could make such a huge difference! The drastic differences in the various demos also make it so much easier to understand how they work and I am incredibly grateful for that! I've always heard people comment how they could tell whether a painting has one or not and maybe guess what color it was, but they were never elaborated beyond that and this video has finally helped me understand! Thank you!!
This was so interesting and informative. As a beginner to intermediate artist I found it very helpful. Thanks for sharing!

You are so welcome!
I've tried underpaintings before after seeing other artists using them but never fully understood how they're supposed to work. That has been incredibly informative and easy to follow, thank you so so much! ❤️
Thx for this very useful video. Finally you’ve explained the “why” of an under painting to someone that didn’t go to art school. 🥰
thank you for this video! p.s. my cat watched it with me and liked watching your brush move around the screen
Just, wow. Talent plus!!! I kind of understood the concept of underpainting but didn’t think it would make much of a difference. However seeing the three paintings next to each other really opened my eyes. Very very well done. Thank you!
Very helpful video. I feel like underpainting is basically never discussed and it makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for watching!
This was interesting. I knew what an underpainting was but I never thought to let it be seen. I have always used my fine detail brush to cover the underlayer completely. I can see the colored halo effect is nice for a whimsical-cartoon art piece. Thank you, you reminded me that putting a compliment wash under the main color focus enrichens the focus of the main color.
So nice to see a fully qualified professional artist demonstrating on KZread, teaching correct information and skills. I am inspired to experiment with gouache watercolours trying you clever techniques. Thank you.
I've started using underpaintings recently, but am still a quite new to them, so I was really excited to see this video! Thanks so much for such a great resource and sharing your experience with them. I thought it was interesting that in these specific demos, I liked the warmer underpaintings, but the complimentary study!
That makes so much sense! It might be why I was frustrated with gouache... it felt flat, but I've never heard of underpainting.
You made me fall in love with gouache
Thank you! I learned a lot. Never used an underpainting before. Looking forward to trying it out.

Such a useful video. Thank you!
what a comprehensive tutorial and explanation!
Your abilities are extraordinary; you do your alma mater PROUD!
I rarely re-watch youtube art videos, but this was so helpful I watched again today! Thanks for showing your palette too- I love a "messy" palette!
This was an exceptionally clear, and helpful demo. Thank you so much.
I’m new to gouache, and I’m so happy I watched this video before proceeding with the turquoise underpainting and orange cat I had planned. 😬 Thank you so much!
Your painting of those horses is absolutely stunning. I have no words!
oh my! I just went on KZread ready to type "Gouache tutorial" and before I could, this showed up on my feed! Thanks so so much!!
The little kitty paw at 11:50 🥺🥺
I've been wanting to try underpainting in my gouache work but haven't fully understood how to go about it before. Now I'm super excited to test it! I mostly paint landacapes with lots of greens so a bright yellow underpainting will help me a lot with the light I hope. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ⭐
Super, I love bright vibrant pinks, purples oranges, reds and yellows. I never thought of underpainting with them and I will definitely give it a try!
Extremely helpful tutorial! Thank you Mary!
thanks for sharing, you are doing great

This is both informative and super relaxing
Tempted to try my hand at gouache… your video made this possible. Thank you! Great video!
Very clear and helpful, thank you!
Super helpful tutorial! The side by side comparisons were super useful to be able to see the differences. Thanks!
This exercise was very helpful. I tried it on a recent work in watercolor and loved how the colors responded. The undercoat wash also allowed the top layer to be more removable when I used the wet brush technique to reveal reflection.
It was very interesting...in fact I was researching about base layers of colors and now I'm more confident to make them in my paintings, cuz I didn't do it.
Good exercise.......great presentation!
This was great!!
Glad I found this!
I'm so so happy that I found you on my new gouache adventure! ♥
Love it.
Started following because of your gouache expertise then noticed you have a paleontology focus. Then found out you work at Tyrell which is supercool because I’m a big fan and followed their Speaker Series each season on KZread. What this means is I’ve followed your work for years and didn’t really know it. 😏
So informative, thanks!
This was so illuminating. Thank you!
great video!!💕💕
Hi Mary, I'm in the exploratory phase of gouache, just learning what it can do. Really like the painting of the buck. You clearly know your way around a palette. Very nice work.
really helpful, thank you!
Love your tutorials Mary. not only the amazing art, but also your calming voice and great story telling that is extremely helpful.
That was such a helpful video! Thank you ❤

That was so informative! Thank you!
Very interesting and helpful! Years ago when I worked in oils, I used to use an Indian red underpainting for landscapes. Now, I'm just getting into gouache and watercolor and interested in trying this out.
Very helpfull!!
