In Russian we also have an idiom similar to "Fish out of water", just we usually use it in a positive sentence. "Fish in water", which describes a person who feels very comfortable in a particular situation. In order to make this sentence negative we usually use a different phrase "to feel/to be not in your own plate". For example: When I speak about politics I'm like a fish out of water (in Russian: I'm not in my own plate when I speak about politics.)

What a nice lesson! It's really funny to learn English idioms from you: you're so expressive! For ex. in Italian we say "Chicken feets" instead of "Crows feets": quite similar, it's only a different bird for the same meaning. We say also "An Elephant in a crystalware" but we mean this for a very careless, rude, coarse person. For "The fish out of water" we share the same idiom, etc. Emma, go on with this kind of enjoyable lessons: it's not only very useful, but also entertaining. Thank you so much!

Two of animal idioms in my language is "You are playing with lion's tail" It means that you are doing a dangerous thing Or "The yellow dog is fox's brother" This means that those two people are not different at all for example "Your friend is stealing and his brother is also stealing. Well we know that the yellow dog is fox's brother.

Excellent lesson Emma. In french we use"pattes d'oie" (Gooses's feet) pour talk aboaut the wrinckle of the corner of the eyes . We also use the same idioms "ne pas faire de mal à une mouche" ('Wouldn't hurt a fly) to desribe someone very kind. But for "Butterflies in one's stomach" ; it's not the same meaning at all : it describes someone who loves a person.
