Absolutely fantastic rods! I’m a novice welder but I’ve had ‘The Knack’ my entire life and so I’m always on the look out for exemplary products. I’ve worked with some incredibly technical material and it’s made me stock my (very) small shop with the best because it’s all I have space for, literally. These rods will always be around in the shop. Holy G-d are these things serious juice. You feel those 220+ amps to the fullest coming off of ‘em and it sliced through a piece of rebar in well under 20 seconds once I mastered the pool. I’m sure with more practice I’ll use less rod, but even for me it wasn’t extreme. I took less than an inch off the damn thing to bust that bar. 💥

Iam so happy you folks made a video on this. I burned through a bunch of them. I just could not get it to work and just gave up on the product. Thanks for posting this video, those little details make a difference!

That looks like a good solution to gouging.

Will the rod burn hole through a 2inch pin like on an excavator? But definitely an interested in the product

Depending on the pin, it may work. If the pin is a 2" diameter pin, it would probably fail in that particular application, but we do have an oxygen lance that we call the Air Axe that would be a better fit. If the pin is a small, 2" thick pin, it would be messy and a little difficult, but it could work.

I have always just cranked my machine up and used the same technique with a small welding electrode to do the same thing. I can see that your electrode lasts longer and will make a longer cut. What other advantages would this have?

A lot of old school welders have used 5p or 6011 cranked up to gouge, which works, but it's messy and adds a lot of carbon to the weld zone. Electra AAA is carbonless, and will create a cleaner champher or cut with much less contamination. It will be ready to weld without any additional prep. It's efficiency and alloy make up make it very effective, and a big time saver as well!

So you're not using DCEN Polarity? Just straight DCEP?

Straight polarity does seem to work best, but it can be used in reverse polarity as well!

I think you might have those backwards. I always have trouble remembering which polarity is which. DCEP is reverse polarity, what you would use for stick, SMAW, welding. DCEN is straight polarity like what you use for TIG, GTAW, welding. So if Rock Mount is saying to use straight polarity it would mean all the ‘heat’ is in the part being gouged, like how it is while tig welding using DCEN.

would 200A be to low for this rod to work correctly?

  • @rockmountwelding

It would work! 1/8 runs well on 200amps, DCEN in particular, but AC and DCEP both work as well.

@@rockmountwelding that’s awesome to hear. I was bummed when it was mentioned you needed 225 amps to run these in the video. I’d be sure to let people know 200amps would be sufficient, a lot of us smaller guys have machines that max out at 200/210 amps and having these around would be super handy. Looking forward to trying some now.
