Heh, same here. I broke my foot and I shouldn't put any weight on it for 6 weeks. With crutches, I'm able to jump around faster than an average person walks. Although it does get my heart pumping, and when it's hot outside, it feels like a cardio workout. Up and down stairs, I usually put the crutches two steps up/down, and then jump on the next step, so it's three steps at a time. Have to be a bit careful with this, though! The biggest gripes I have with crutches is that palms get pretty sore from all the pressure on the handles (better cushioned grips might help, I was thinking about wrapping them with gel handlebar tape), inconvenience when "parking" the crutches (a product called "XCLIP", a piece of plastic that costs as much as a pair of crutches, goes a long way in relieving this issue), and most of all, inability to bring stuff around in my hands. I just got another thing this week, called iWalk 3.0, it's like a prosthetic leg. It's quite a different feel from crutches. I am not as fast on it as on crutches, but the energy expenditure is lower, it feels almost like normal walking. Best of all, the hands are completely free, so it's very good for doing any kind of work around house, e.g. cooking, bringing things around. Pretty happy about it so far.

It seems like all the tips in your video are for a full weight bearing case. Both legs/feet are working equally, the crutches are used for balance and/or to reduce loading on the legs/feet. I am guessing you could also use nordic walking or hiking poles to achieve the same or similar effect. My case is non weight bearing (a broken foot), so the way I use crutches is completely different. I put both crutches forward, then hop with my healthy leg approximately the same distance beyond the crutches as where the foot was before the crutches. It's pretty quick, but both shoulders and the healthy leg are getting a good workout, i.e. it uses quite a lot of energy this way.
@bethc8809
Жыл бұрын
Hiking poles don't have the same support. For someone like me, with hypermobile joints, a hiking pole wouldn't support the wrist at all. A full crutch can completely wreck the shoulder joint. Aligning support through a forearm crutch can help bear the weight in a way that doesn't damage the shoulder or the wrists.
@GenePavlovsky
