In this video, Captain Cody shows how to use a downrigger. Cody was using them to catch salmon in Alaska. He has also used them to catch salmon in the great lakes and king mackerel in the USVI.
Having downriggers is a must when salmon fishing. There are times where mooching for salmon is a great option but downriggers are the tried and true consistent way to catch fish.
There is more to using a downrigger than most people realize. I caught most of the salmon this year between 80 and 240 feet down. The best way to fish these depths is with a downrigger. Mooching can be great when fish are everywhere but when they are spread out a downrigger is a must.
The downriggers I was using were Scotty high-speed electric downriggers. These use a 200 lb braided line rather than wire cable. A 15-pound lead weight was best due to the depths that we were fishing.
In this video, I show several tricks that will help you catch more fish. Most of the fish are right near the bottom and someday I would 5 halibut in addition to salmon while trolling. The best way to use a downrigger for salmon in to use a flasher to attract the fish and then use bait that that has spinning action to look like an injured fish. The flasher can be tied to the ball so that it does not have to be reeled in with the fish.
Using downriggers is the same way commercial fishermen catch salmon. They are allowed to run a hook every 6 feet though. Their riggers are on hydraulics to lift a 65-pound weight and all the fish that are on the line.
For salmon leader lengths I use 30-inch leaders from the start of the hoochie to the start of the first hook. This would be a 34-inch overall leader length. Most people use and overall leader length of around 40 inches for kings salmon and 30 inches for coho salmon.
I hope this helps you catch more fish.
Thank for watching,
Captain Cody

    I started using a downrigger in Santa Cruz, CA in 1984. We followed salmon 15-25 Lbs. all season. We went down 5-10 ft per week till fall when we came up 5-10 feet each week. We limited out every day in 30 min. I thought I knew it all about down riggers, but this video was extraordinary. I fish out of Sidney, BC today. Good work!

    I have used the electric and 1050 riggers for many years. kzread.infoUgkxbjBedIFSQ6Y6rp8DrCC_aoWMZI8GUpmH I bought these lake trollers for my 15’ Grumman sport boat and they worked almost perfectly for fishing lake trout. The only negative is that they seemed sticky on the retrieval, so I removed the spool and greased the underside of the stainless steel plate with some lip balm (the only thing I could think to use that I had on the boat with me). Then they worked much more smoothly. I don’t recommend using these down riggers if you’re planning on fishing deeper than 50’ as you’ll spend more time cranking than you will fishing.

  • @CaptainCody7

    Good question, when the fish are shallow they are typically not all shallow so it still good to run some lines on the down-rigger from 20-60 feet. Above 20 feet it is good to run flat-lines. Just a mooching setup with herring and a 6 ounce lead set back on line counter from 50-125 feet. These can be set straight out the back. Also you can run spoons or orange jointed Rapals work well near the surface as well. Set the line 75 plus foot back from the spoons. If there are lots of fish, I like mooching with the fish are shallow. Just drop to 100 and then to surface. If you are trolling and have planner boards that is a good way to get shallow lines set far away from the boat. If you are only allowed one line per anger you can typically get 4-6 lines set without planer boards though. I use to fish the great lakes with 10 lines and planners worked great for salmon and steelhead. I have an article it the description with some good lures to use. Thanks for watching Makena!

    Hi Capt Cody, I live and fish in Juneau. Love your instruction for the flashers and herring hook up. My Question is: If you get a fish on the port side do you reel up the starboard side gear to play the fish. It appears you keep fishing the starboard side but reel up the gear on the port side.

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    Жыл бұрын

    It depends on the size of the fish. If I know it is a king salmon I will clear all the gear. If it is a rockfish, small ling, or pink I will usually keep fishing the other side. In Juneau the silvers are big so I would clear all the gear as well. If you have a flat line that is setup like a mooching rig you can actually drop it down and get a double 10+ percent of the time.

    This is a great video. It appears that you're running braided line on both of your setups. Is there a benefit to having braid vs mono when using the downriggers? What pound braid do you recommend? Thanks!

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Paxton! On the salmon reels there is 30 pound mono. The downrigger lines themselves are a braided line as opposed to wire. The halibut poles have 80 pound braid. Mono is good on the salmon reels cause you have to clip it in the downrigger clips.

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    3 жыл бұрын

    Cool, fishing out of Wrangell will probably be very nice! Since the salmon are usually targeted in 250 feet or less most sonars will mark bait and fish if the finder settings are correct. I really like having a contour chart with a sonar display in the back where were are trolling so it is easy to check for fish and more importantly depth changes. Typically one rigger is tracking the bottom so you have to be checking the chart to see if the depth is going to change ahead. Otherwise, you will lose downrigger balls more often than you should. Also, watching the bottom contours helps to find flats for halibut and rocky areas for rockfish and lingcod.

    Sure it would work! I find herring is the best bait and with the setup tracking bottom I like to have the ideal setup. With fishing for kings the line tracking bottom catches 70 percent of the fish. So on charters I always run herring on that one. The other setups I run spoons or hoochies and they catch fish as well.

    Are you talking in the ocean or in a lake? Any time fish are down below 30 feet a downrigger is a great option! When I striper fish in the ocean I typically pull umbrella rigs with inline weights to get them deeper. I have an article about it on my website global fishing reports. That being said a downrigger with a spoon would likely work very well. Stripers are schooling fish so a flasher might even help although I have never tried that. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks! The short leader helps there be less slack in the line when it is released from the clip. Also when tracking bottom less likely to get snagged. When fishing in very clear ocean water for other fish types like Wahoo or Kingfish a longer leader is a good idea. For salmon, a short leader works great. The ball, flasher and bait all close together can also help to attract salmon as they are used to swimming in schools. Thanks for watching!

    Hey dude, I'm watching your video and saw you run a flasher spoon on one side and ball to flasher with herring solo above on the other side of the boat. Herring looked great at 1.5 knots, but how does your flasher/spoon look at the 1.5 kts? I always struggled with that. Either fast enough for spoon flasher rig or slower for herring. I also rig my herring similar to you just a little different but same entry just a little further forward on the mouth. So I know the herring can handle faster speeds. But do you run your flasher/spoon at 1.5? And herring at 1.5? Or was that just for demonstration purposes? So you don't run faster with spoons and slower with herring? Great video. Thanks

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    Sure thing, the trolling speed will vary depending on the direction of the current. So it is always good to look at the angle of the downrigger lines. However in general I like to troll around 1.8 mph for kings and around 2.5-3.0 mph for silvers. For kings, I typically use herring or flasher with a hoochie. For silvers herring, spoons, and flatlined herring, all work well. You can troll the herring up to 3.5 mph with no problem. Good luck out there!

    For the one with two clips, the metal swivel if you will, is there if the clip on the downrigger line gets knocked off. Well, the boat was set up like that before me. The boat is drivin from the back when trolling so the riggers being mid-ship makes them closer and easier to adjust. I am constantly adjusting the starboard side one to track the bottom so that is nice. Also, they are left on all day. So when halibut fishing it is nice having the back clear. Mouthing the riggers toward the back is fine as well. It does make watching the rods a little bit easier.

  • @CaptainCody7

    Yeah if you have electric downrigger you defiantly want some bumpers. Scotty #1039 Soft Stop Bumper are on amazon. Some terminal kits come with a 1-inch section for rubber tubing to place between the bumpers. If I do not have the tubing I would just two two rubber gum-puckies that are used to protect the tips of the poles. If you do not have those, 3-4 of the bumpers should be equivalent. It will definitely help reduce the chance of the ball breaking off if the stopper bead does not engage for whatever reason.

    Can you only get away with no fin on the lead ball because your weights are so heavy? Would no fin on a 6 or 9lb ball work ok? ie, straight tracking and no excessive spinning of ball, leading to tangles?

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is a good question. If you just put in the ball it would likely spin the cable or braided line. However the flasher or release clip adds drag to the back stabilizing the downrigger ball. The center of pressure shifts to the rear of the center of gravity of the ball with the release clip added. This makes the ball with a release clip statically stable from an aerodynamic or in this case a hydrodynamic system. A lighter ball would actually be more stable so smaller weights could also be round and work. Some downrigger shapes could be slightly less drag though but heaver weight is most important to allow for deeper trolling with less angle on the line. With the 15 pounders we can fish 240 feet down at 1.5-2.0 mph for kings. A smaller 6 pound ball would work fine trolling down to 20-60 feet depending on the size of the bait and flasher when fishing for silvers at 3.0 mph. I hope that helps!

    @CaptainCody7

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, some people do use 12 pounders. I can see why you would want to with manual riggers. It really depends on how deep you want to fish. In May and June 90 Percent of the kings in Stika are deeper than 100 feet so having 15 pounds is a must. July, August, September for silvers you can probably use 4 pounds if you really wanted to. I stay the same weight cause I can gauge the lure speed based on cable angle. If I was using manual I would probably have one 15 pounder to track bottom/deep with and a 12 on the other side of the boat to fish less than 100 feet. If you want to go deep with 12 pounds you can troll with the current and around 1.5 mph. The rigger cable should still be at greater than 40 degrees though or you are going to slow. Hope this helps!

    I have not trolled for kokanee or sockeye salmon in open water so I am not positive. I think that the flasher/dodger works but you need to use a very small artificial squid or fly as they typically feed on krill.

    Thanks , they are very boat shy but not line shy so I was wondering if the weight or the boat strait above would work ?

  • @CaptainCody7

    @@timross7046 Probably depends on their depths. If the fish are less than 60 feet there are lots of ways to set lines for trolling away from the boat, such as planner boards and dipseys. I imaging the flasher would help attract them though on the downrigger. In the great lakes, people send positive voltage down the downrigger cable to prevent fish from being scared by the boat. It is called positive Ion control. I talk about it briefly in the downrigger article. But for shallow fish using planer boards or outrigger are a good way to set lines away from the boat. Or just a 6 to 8-ounce weight straight out the back with a leader and small artificial squid.

    Why do you use braid instead of cable on your downrigger?

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    High-speed downriggers typically use a braided line rather than a multi-strand cable. High speed meaning the retrieval rate of the downrigger. Either one is good to use in my opinion. Thanks for watching!

    Are thoughs frozen herring ?

    Yeah, they are frozen green label size herring that start out frozen. Add salt to brine and then keep them in a small cooler. I do show this somewhere in the video. If not it is in the how-to mooch for salmon video.

    I’m trying to figure out what happens when you hook up on a salmon. Do you leave the cannonball down at its original depth while you fight the fish or bring it up so it’s out-of-the-way? And if two people are fishing, on to downrigger’s, does the one who’s not hooked up pull up both balls or do you just leave them in the water and hope the fish doesn’t run around those lines.?

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    Well it does depend on the size of the fish and if you are stacking multiple lines on one rigger and how many extra hands you have on the boat. However in general once the fish releases the line off the downrigger one of the first things you do is bring up the downrigger on that side of the boat. If it is an electric downrigger this is easy as you just twist the retrieve switch and the stopper will leave the downrigger ball right at the surface. If it is a big fish all the lines and both downriggers are typically cleared as quickly as possible. If it is a little pink, or rockfish, you can usually leave the other lines and downriggers out and just drag the fish on the surface and net it. The downrigger the fish was caught on needs to be brought up to reset the line either way so you mind as well bring up the downrigger ball right away.

    @@CaptainCody7 Great Answer. I figured as much but none of the many vids I watched said anything about it.. I figure the real trick will be when I'm fishing alone in a center console boat, trying to keep the boat in gear and on course while I let the fish soak a bit while I bring up the ball on a manual downrigger. That scenario has disaster written all over it. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

    @@gjbingham Yeah, trolling by yourself with manual riggers would be tricky. Depending on where you are fishing though you can probably only have one line per person. So if only one rigger is down I bet you could just leave it down, take the boat out of gear and just make sure the line does not get wrapped around the cable. Usually the line tracking bottom catches most of the fish anyway. It would be good to reel the rigger up about 20 feet if you are tracking bottom so it does not get hung up.

    What action rod do you like for riggers?

  • @CaptainCody7

    @CaptainCody7

    These are G-Loomis 10ft 6 inch salmon mooching rods. Power heavy action moderate. In the video description I link to an article I wrote with the best rods and reels for salmon fishing. If the G-Loomis is to expensive there are some Okuma rods that will work for downriggers and mooching as well.
