Are you tired of flat, lifeless images? Want to add some depth and dimension to your shots? Well, you're in luck! In this tutorial, I'll show you the secret to bringing your images to life: Depth Maps. That's right, with just a few clicks, you can add both atmospheric depth and blur depth to your images using the Blur Depth neural filter, the Lens blur filter, and a depth map. And the best part? We'll even use these techniques in a real-world project to make your subjects stand out from the background.

    The depth maps are so versatile, and thank you for showing us two different applications in terms of fog and depth blur, and on two different images. So insightful and will help me make better compositions, both easier and faster. Thanks Rikard.

    Great tips! Fog will also generally have a bit of texture to it, so I'd also recommend adding a bit of grain to the fog to better sell the composite.

    Perfect timing. Yesterday, when editing an image, I blurred the background after making a selection of the subject. Closer inspection today revealed an imperfect selection (aren't they all lol). I just used Depth Blur after watching the first part of this tutorial. It worked really great for what I wanted to do. Thank you so much for introducing me to this tool. Another lesson added to the book called "The More I Learn, the More There is to Learn." 🎆

    Thanks for the tutorial Rikard ... just one question though. When you create the gradients for the lights, how do you create multiple gradients on one layer? Every time I try this the gradient applies to the whole layer and it is almost impossible to adjust. If I try a second gradient, it simply overrides the first one. Any suggestions?

    Thank you for describing and illustrating these tools. My one hesitation with following the techniques exactly would be that the resulting histogram in your first example was massively ruined. Since digital images are confined to the histogram (and the cloud can't replace image information just yet) for any output other than older displays, these images would not reproduce very well. I guess it comes down to intent - if the intent is to faithfully reproduce an image with as little degradation as possible for the widest amount of output possibilities or if the intent is to have the image shown as a small size on digital displays only. At that point it is more about editing techniques rather than the Depth Map you were illustrating. In any case, thanks again for showing the tool.

    Hi Ikard, I have been using PS for many years, but I found your tutorial is very useful and cover lot of information there. Just subscribed. I'm thinking to update my Photoshop version, but not sure Elements version is good enough or not. What I heard is there is no big difference if I don't plan to print any professional products. What is your opinion?

  • @nuclylearn

    @nuclylearn

    7 ай бұрын

    I haven't used Elements enough to give a good comparison of the two. The last time I used the program, it wasn't near as robust as Photoshop and comparing the two would be silly. But I know Elements added some basic layer functionality and other tools which make it closer to Photoshop. It's something I intend to explore in the new year.

I have tried Layer Mask >From Transparency then adjustment threshold 1 for selection creation. Was that the same technique you use?

  • @nuclylearn

    @nuclylearn

    Жыл бұрын

    Not sure. But you could also right-mouse-click > select pixels and then activate the quickmask. From there, go to image adjustments > curves. Then take the top of the curve and move it to the left to where the histogram is flat. From there, deactivate the quickmask and fill in your selection. It will be 100% opaque.

    awesome tutorial , i have 2 questions // when you create the fog switch the depth map to screen which looks amazing then use a clipped curve like you have , what i want to know is there a way to make the fog more murky and darker without makeing the actuall image darker or losing the fog ? like i want to use this technique with dark woodlands/forest but i have no idea how to make the fog darker murky like to fit the look of the image ??? // question 2 when you creat a depth map for a forest scene but the tree closest to you has a branch with alot of leaves and the depth map really struggles to deal with this and creates like this weird block around the leaves as its not filling in the gaps properly , so is there a way to fill in the gaps of leaves with the fog so it looks seamless and none of that weirdness you get ??? / ive tried all sorts of ways to do this but no luck , hoping you can help me out here / awesome channel btw love your content

  • @nuclylearn

    @nuclylearn

    To answer your first question, the way to color your fog would be to first make it a transparent layer so that you don't have to use the screen blend mode. You can do this by selecting your channel thumbnail while holding command and then fill in your selection with white on a new layer. From there, you can adjust the color and opacity to your liking. For your second question, unfortunately there's not a great solution here. As you point out, the neural filter is not great at fine detail. So the only way I can think to do it, would be to use smart selections and hand paint your depth map in the detailed areas.

  • @nuclylearn

    @nuclylearn

    Unfortunately, the CREATION of depth maps is something Adobe introduced in Photoshop CC 2021 with neural filters. But if you already have a depth map (any 3D program will render them) you can use them as shown. I have, on a few occasions, also created my own depth map from images to use with the Lens Blur filter, but it is quite time consuming.
